  1. I suppose we could try to take it up ourselves using the stats already made, or launch an alternative campaign to take up the slack. Or just wait and see and be chill like the cool cats we all are.
  2. That generally reflects my attitude. However, I question myself for not responding well to music of pre-classical periods. That's why I went in search of Baroque beyond Vivaldi and Handel.
  3. Somehow, I found his lack of a period softened the blow significantly. I asked my question, not because the answers are necessarily a truth in their own right, but because tradition often contains slivers of history, as well as insight into the human condition. Nearly every creation has a story for creation, many have a cleansing period shortly thereafter (often a flood)... I can't help but suspect that there are messages there if you connect the dots.
  4. It occurs to me that I forget . It's not the best musically, but both the impression and the choice of song tickles my funny bone more than anything since Jimmy Carter was on the Daily Show.
  5. Actually, that raises an interesting question. If I understand correctly, Genesis subscribes Adam's name as coming directly from God Himself, not Adam (or Eve, obviously, as she apparently came later). Does this hold true with Ask and Embla? Deucalion and Pyrrha? Svayambhuva Manu? (Yeah, I definitely had to look that last one up for spelling).

  7. I've been a shameless fanboy for a local band, lately (www.facebook.com/AllThePrettyHorses). I would love to expand my horizons. Can anyone suggest tolerable Baroque (besides Bach), solid bluegrass, rap that doesn't sample better artists, or any modern jazz that isn't too avant-garde or just dull?

  9. The highest compliments are usually unsolicited comparisons to people I respect. I am also a fan of prompts to run for some sort of town office. The worst insult was not intended as such, and is denied as written by the teacher who said it. "I will be interested to see who you marry. She will have to see all of your flaws as endearing."

  12. Whoa. Actaeon is checking "Who's Online". Who knew?
  13. I'm going to return to the assertion that it's a semantics issue. "Name" is not so cut and dry is it might appear. Slarty has asserted, and I suppose I agree, that "you" or "me" doesn't count. Does any absolutely unique signifier count? If so, based on what's been said about animals, we can probably assume that much predates man. Complex vocalizations used in a verbal context? Probably less than a million years. The equipment for speech as we know it didn't emerge fully until Cro Magnon.
  14. I would find all this significantly more interesting with some graphing and statistical analysis. I also cannot help but wonder what all of those guests are DOING. I assume the majority are looking for specific game info, and not just lurking General.
  15. Don't try to impose your will on us, Alorael! Your plan to turn us all into third person posting, pedestrian sniping, default using automatons will not succeed! -Actaeon, who did actually change back to coffee as an act of rebellion. He is as susceptible to reverse psychology as they come.
  16. (Thus all the references to *i before they all got hung up on cheesecake. This community needs some new inside jokes. The unsellable trowel references are liable to get old.)

How do you find out if a movie is mainstream or not? I generally just chose films by rottentomatoes or by the advice of the people that own the movie theatre. Since I haven't heard of most of Excalibur's, I gather that is not a reliable method.

No Triad Mage in there. Probably a custom title.
  19. Naming is a necessity of difference. Words chop one concept off the block of vaguer terms. In some sense "me" and "you" are perfectly acceptable names if there are only two people (an unlikely circumstance). Perhaps a linguistic specialist knows better, but names are not preserved, as such, in the prehistoric archaeological record. Symbols and objects to represent individuality, however, are present as far back as the dawn of anatomically modern humans (some would argue long before that). Do animals give each other names? Depends on your definition. My cats make different noises to greet different people (and each other).

My favorite movie of the year so far was "Midnight in Paris". I liked the subject, found the acting adequate, and shockingly enjoyed the writing and directing (Woody Allen). "Moneyball" (8/10) was surprisingly good, well paced and with enough explination to keep the non-sportsfan pretty interested. I found myself referencing "Crazy Stupid Love" (8/10) a great deal, which is unusual for a romance film. I thought "Blue Valentine" was better, but that came out last year. At least it was better than "The Ides of March", although that was not Ryan Gosling's fault. Although I enjoyed "Hugo" (7/10), I though "The Muppets" (8/10) stole the show for family films, while "Titin" (5.5/10) was visually solid but rather overdone. "Beginners" (6.5/10) and "My Idiot Brother" (6/10)were both quirky and indie, if a bit cliché. I liked "The Guard" (7/10), but I couldn't really say why. "Tree of Life" (4/10) and "Atlas Shrugged" (3/10) were both way too full of themselves and unbearably preachy. The former tried too hard to be artsy, and the latter had some of the most wooden acting I've ever seen. "The Conspirator" (8/10) was a lovely period piece, and I particularly liked Robin Wright's performance. "Jane Eyre" (7/10) was fine, too, but so were earlier adaptations. On the quirky comedy side, I enjoyed both Cedar Rapids (5.5/10)and Win Win (6/10), as they possessed a certain amount of depth. I am, however, somewhat biased against the style. Overall, an average year in cinema from my perspective. Better than some in the last decade, but not quite up to the standards of last year (King's Speech, Blue Valentine, Black Swan, Winter's Bone, etc.).
  21. Banned in 47 states. Did he changes his custom title back already?
  22. I like the lower contrast of coffee, the energy saving potential of dark, and the way the default blends with the logo. As such, I suppose I'll follow the crowd. Plus, as noted in another thread, it simplifies the forgery aspect.
  23. I don't know. My memory ain't what it used to be. I am happy to convert, though, upon reviewing the options. Edit: It's also easier to forge the default.
  24. Coffee reminds me of the old board default...
