I can't speak to the chain stores, but the independent ones I know of are hit or miss. I'd search the specific area she's going to and see whether there's any place small scale that specializes. That, or, what Dantius said. A university.

Surely there was a topic on that somewhere... How could we have neglected it?

Or, you know... http://www.britannica.com/. (Because no one would ever just walk down to the library and grab a physical copy).

I think Tyran wins the "best ways to get around Wikipedia's well meaning blackout" competition.

I could see Paul taking the West, actually. Colorado, taken as a whole, is pretty much libertarian. We're pretty far down the line, though. Anyone interesting on third party tickets this year? The options are so bad that a solid independent might actually have a shot this time around. Do you mean Colbert running again? No, I don't take it seriously. The Colbert that's running is fictional. Stewart could make a bid at Presidency with some hope of legitimacy, but for that very reason it will probably never happen.

It's midnight on the East Coast. Google's got a doodle, Wikipedia's off, and a webcomic or two (I noticed Questionable Content) is down. Not much of a statement. Glad it sounds like it's already dead in the water.

I don't think Romney has the charisma to beat Obama. In fact, I'm not sure any of the candidates have a very good shot at the moderates, except perhaps Ron Paul. I could certainly be wrong, as I have few sources of political information and don't trust any of them, but it seems like the right wing is flubbing a solid chance to take back power.

Of course, Wikipedia gains a lot of freedom by being donation funded. Facebook and Youtube, from my understanding, gain revenue by advertisements. They would have a lot of cause to hesitate, particularly if there doesn't appear to be any immediate danger from SOPA.

Luckily the top web sites in the US are pretty well documented: http://www.alexa.com/topsites/countries/US. There are alternatives to Google's search engine, but Youtube's #3. Many of those sites (Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Craigslist, imdb) are under no obligation to keep up service. Ebay, Amazon, Paypal, and Netflix may have more trouble.

So Wikipedia tells me it will be offline Wednesday as an act of protest against SOPA. I had the amusingly dual reactions of "like that'll do anything" and "OMG how will I survive?". I'd like to hear this community's thoughts on internet activism, our dependence on the web, and obviously all things SOPA.

(Please note that my previous statements were, in fact, sarcastic.)

Oh, come on. Jeff could just license existing games to be coded for online co-op play. You could team up in gangs of dozens to slay demons and complete quests, and kill each other over loot because, after all, there's only one Demonslayer.

Indeed. If there is anything we can do to help, pass it on.

Surely the deep web has less disturbing elements. You just wouldn't get access to them via 4chan because, well... The latter is as broad as they come, with just enough depth to keep you clicking.

I'm sure there are some good ideas out there that neither Jeff or the community hasn't thought of yet. There are also have a dozen that have been suggested over and over. Before making a new thread, I humbly suggest that you search the forum to discover which yours is. (Although I admit that I am the author of some of this forums dullest threads.)

Stumbleupon's old news (really old for those of us foolish enough to burn out on it years before it became a thing), Google's easter eggs are well hashed over, and zombo.com has lost it's pizzaz. I beeseech you, denizens of the Internet, to reveal the nooks and crannies that only the most intrepid browsers have seen. And, so that this thread doesn't warrant an immediate lock, let me emphasize the first example (a rather useful tool of time loss) as opposed to the last (something you set the computer lab's homepages to). I rather liked vark.com, but that's been scrapped. Grandcentral's now Google Voice. In fact, the only marginally cool thing I have to offer in return is this.

What advantages does Paint have over Photoshop and Illustrator? (And their various freeware counterparts like Gimp.) I've never owned a Windows PC, so I've never used it.

After years as a die hard 3E fan, I'm starting to gather how much is out there outside of Wizards of the Coast. I have no intention of ever buying an RPG system again.

Actually, isn't there a spidweb last.fm group? Edit: www.last.fm/group/Spiderweb (Sorry if it was supposed to be a secret.)

I could run a AIM based D&D campaign, but obviously wouldn't take on AIMhack until I'd actually, you know, played a game.

I sure walked into that one.

When did the first men get names and what were they?

I think science and religion are in agreement on that point. I'm a little afraid of this turning into an ideological debate, but I'm sure the mods have everything well in hand. (I'm a pantheist, by the way.)
