  1. I'm with Nalyd on this one*. There's three** Star Wars films and three*** Indiana Jones films. Rumors of other movies are just propaganda. * This is never, under any circumstances, to be quoted out of context. ** Four, with the Christmas Special.
  2. Dikiyoba, allowing a brain slug to infect you does not count as adjusting your implants.
  3. We've done Spiderweb events for a number of primarily American holidays. I don't really see the problem with it, unless non-Americans feel that we're not willing to participate in their holidays. Do I need to start a Diwali thread?
  4. This may not be something you want to make light of, Trenton.
  5. I have purchased games and never finished them (Avadon, Nethergate: Ressurection), but I make a point of at least trying each one. I should probably make a point of playing the demo, but I tend to jump the gun with Spidweb. I will probably finish both, someday. I have a similar attitude toward books, although I have several orders of magnitude more books than games, and it takes me a while to get to them all.
  6. If I go to my profile, it lists me as "member", as opposed to mod. IPB seems, thus, to take the two as separate categories. Regardless, the mods have more to play with in terms of internet costuming, so the distinction is warranted.
  7. On the Internet, I'd say you have to worry about Google more than Disney. Although, if it would keep Newcorp, Time Warner, or Viacom from getting their hands on it...
  8. Distinguishing the Gulf from the ocean seems, to an inland chap like myself, a little bit tenuous. In any case, I don't think anyone claimed it was going to be worse than Katrina. The devastation in New Orleans had a lot to do with the fact that a large part of the city is below sea level (unlike your state, Trenton, which I understand tops out at more than three hundred feet above!). It's simply a stronger storm than is usual for the Northeast, which is much less prepared, both practically and mentally, for something on this scale. And the overall population affected, due to both the size and the incredible density of the Atlantic Coast, is significant.
  9. Hey, your postcount and gimmick line up now!
  10. I see sense as much more important to cognition than language. I'm not sure the individual in question would have the capacity to ask "why is it always dark?" Dark is a concept that only has any meaning in comparison to light. Without sensory apparatus, both are completely without reference. Which brings me to the point Jewels asked me to elaborate on. I posit that, rather than naming things in our own right, words are only coined when something must be distinguished from something else- either in terms of a polarity, or simply by creating several categories out of a single previous concept. There is always another word, or words, in the negative space. You might assert that some things are so entirely new or fundamentally different from everything else that they need no reference. These tend to be things I can't quite grok, myself. To me, concepts are easiest understood through their relationship to other things. "Everything but __", "both ___ and ___", "like __, except"...
  11. One of my earliest memories deals with the frustration of not being able to communicate. My bottle fell under my crib and I lacked the preposition to tell my mother where it was, although I think I was making progress with nouns at the time.
  12. Flashlights? I always take power outages as an opportunity to illuminate my home by candle light.
  13. I would apply the same description to Freud. But then, I'm an Anthropology major.
  14. Perhaps this is out of line with the intent of General, but I would like to wish all the Spiderwebbers on the East Coast good luck with the oncoming storm, and I hope to see them safe and well on the other side. Keep us updated.
  15. Spiderwebbers, in general, seem more inclined than their contemporaries not to drink. That's a gross generalization, of course. I know of several prominent members who partake frequently and with gusto. I considered doing a poll, but decided it would be hard to make family friendly, considering how many people are underage.
  16. As noted above, Trenton, some things are not accessible, including private messages and, I've noticed, some things that are available are not indexed for searching. Besides which, having a backup is far from a bad thing. Eventually, perhaps, it will merge with PPP, but in the mean time it'll do the job as is. Edit: Sniped, and more succinctly at that.
  17. I have heard the assertion, most recently from a fellow Spiderwebber, that all linear, cohesive thought requires some form of language. That is to say, in order to think about something you must first name it and categorize it in some form (even if there's no outloud expression.) While I accept that complex, abstract concepts cannot be properly conceived or communicated without something of the sort, this seemed a little far to me. So, questions to ponder and discuss: To what extent is language tied up with cognition? Can the latter exist without the former? Do you THINK in language? Even when your imagining a sensory experience? To what extent to basic neurological responses qualify as "thought? What qualifies as "language"? Does a pet communicating a desire for food count? Is language the primary avenue for cultural programming? The only one? Do different languages produce inherently different behaviors? Does having more ways of expressing something make it easier to understand? Is naming direct, or are all things defined in opposition to, or as a distinct part of, something else? To what extent are words and meaning subjective? Do they, in fact, have any absolute definition? As culture and language evolve, which leads the way? Is there a feedback? I could go on, but I think that should provide enough conversation generation to start with.
  18. You're making good use of the new camera, Sylae. I'll need to dig through my bloated files for some decent stuff to post. In the mean time, here's a few random night shots. My apologies if I posted any of 'em before. This is one of the threads I was thinking of re-starting.
  19. Looks around for the kiosk. Realizes he's been had. Slumps dejectedly.
  20. I think it's down at the moment. At least, I timed out of chat a moment ago and haven't been able to get back on. Your approach must have triggered the built in defenses. (Incidentally, for those disinclined to make an account, you can go directly to calref.net/chat and just put in a username, no password, to log in as a guest.) Edit: Sniped. Tyran always gets the better of me in the end.
  21. "Rogue process" would be the best custom title ever. Not that I've been revolutionary enough to warrant it.
  22. It looks to me like you registered an account way back in 2009, though not a terrifically active one. In any case, at least three prominent Spiderwebbers have appeared in CalRef chat in the last twenty four hours. The place is run by a mod. The days of being exclusive or counterculture are, at least for Ligrev's Lounge, fading away. You should stop by. Just don't expect family friendly. Oh, come on, you're giving Tyran credit for pointing out the obvious? I demand my sniping kudos!
  23. It's disconcerting to have Sylae doing these things instead of Aran. Next thing you know she'll be manufacturing her own bots. ... It occurs to me that the Refuge has grown in influence lately. Perhaps I am too late with my warning. Perhaps I am one of them.
