  1. As a general rule of thumb, when you find yourself linking to locked topics, it's worth thinking twice.
  2. If it's within my power, I'd like to officially put Spiderbus to rest. Iffy will be coming out with a new RP in the not so distant future. I'm still working on a hybrid RP/RPG, and I think I'll have a pretty cool web interface to go with it. Meanwhile, the rest of you can think of what YOU might like to do in this regard. I think there are many more potential participants in role playing than are currently involved.
  3. You could share the tea conversation a bit. I actually know something about THAT beverage.
  4. I believe I have previously suggested that we give alcohol a thread of its own. I humbly do so again.
  5. We had someone go crazy with a modified bulldozer in Granby a few years back, but he mainly went after buildings and ended up being the only casualty. A methodical, planned mass killing can be carried out with household items. But the vast majority of them chose guns. Automatic weapons in particular, seem to attract the sort of people most likely to use them. At least, the assault rifle owners I know are pretty unstable. The bottom line is that, when the horror fades, we're going to want to prevent this sort of thing from happening again. We're not going to fix society or cure every violent person in a day, but gun control is an issue quite within our power to alter.
  6. I almost posted a Gun Control topic after a conversation with my friend two days ago. I guess I'm glad I didn't. I'm going to go ahead and share the opinions I expressed there, and give this incident some time to settle before it sways me. I know a lot of people that use guns responsibly. I am leery of the temptation to ban guns entirely. From hunting, to self defense, to rising against a corrupt government, they have occasionally served a purpose. Right now, they are clearly detrimental. We have created a society that produces desensitization, apathy, and isolation in a large part of its populous. We are producing psychopaths by the dozen, and our expensive and stigmatized mental health care system can hardly keep the lid on them. Then, when one of them runs amuck, we plaster it all over the media, keeping it in the collective consciousness and reminding the others that they, too, can go out with a bang. That said, civilians should not be allowed to own assault rifles. I heard RFK was killed with a .22, but some of more recent shootings have involved legally obtained automatic weapons, and that just shouldn't be. We should at least pretend we're trying to keep people safe.

    The Hobbit

I just returned from the first film. It was fairly decent. Several plot points were tweaked for better or for worse, and the action scenes are both overly frequent and somewhat tedious, but the tone struck a good balance between the darkness of the Lord of the Rings and the somewhat playful nature of the book. You get the sense of classic fantasy world with cracks beginning to appear in it- a foreboding that is laid on a little thick but works well to tie everything together. Also, I've come to accept the logic of splitting it into three films. There's not good break in the middle, but there are good places for thirds. I think, however, that you could easily cut half an hour off this one, and while the second should be great, the Battle of Five Armies is likely to go on forever. I almost feel like I just sat through the extended edition, and the special DVD edition should be a shorter cut. Anyway, that's just about the end of my unsolicited review. I cautiously recommend that the Tolkien fans among you go see it. Be prepared for a few dull moments, a few ridiculous ones, and a healthy smattering of spine tingling awesome.
  8. I'd call it underhanded and manipulative, but since I cooperated with it, I have no room to complain.
  9. I never seem to see you anymore, Kel. Or should I say, #26.
  10. Why would you SAY something like that? I remember the days following your registration, Iffy. They were dark ones.
  11. Now THAT's a statistic worth looking at. And not just because I ranked decently.
  12. Incidentally, I haven't really looked into the Spiderweb blog scene. Is it worth it?
  13. I made more posts than TRENTON? No wonder people have been calling me spammy. (Or maybe it's my willingness to indulge in meta-spam like this thread.)

    I live

Most of us did, Triumph. Welcome back, Niemand. I remember you, although I do not expect the reverse is true.
  16. Someone help me come up with a good pun based off of this and "I Want You (She's So Heavy)".
  17. I'm with Iffy on G3. I'm also going to go the extra mile and suggest you play them by release date, alternating between Avernum and Geneforge. Really, though, he only asked for a starting point. Besides, Exile and the original Avernums aren't an option, as they're not on Steam.
  18. While this is accurate, I think that SoT's point about the Geneforge series being complete is key. If you start with G1, you're looking at five games (four of which are truly top notch) with progressively refined interfaces. However, if you'd like a one-off game with a great interface and open world, Avernum: Escape from the Pit is an excellent choice. My only fear is that it will spoil you on earlier, less polished games.
  19. I'm a big fan of one dollar coins. It's the nerd in me. I would also be a lot more comfortable trading something with actual, rather than representative, value, but I understand that's a lot to ask for. The bigger issue at the moment is how SoT can reach 6,000 posts without a milestone thread, like it's no big deal.
  20. Great Scott, you're right! The rate went from about 90¢ the last time I visited, to $1.01 now! I should send in my citizenship documentation and move right away. But wait... the Aussie's made it to $1.05! If only I had citizenship there, also. (Edit: I don't want to hear about the Euro, Aran.)
  21. For those of you stateside, that's $39.99. I'll let Dinti figure it out in Canuck.

    Good idea!

I would call this topic drift, except that Sylae started the thread.

    Good idea!

Do they have to be about the community, or could they be game related?
