  1. I think he meant pots... Because that's certainly where you will find it (just don't go searching for it before you need to because you won't find it).

  3. Sounds different from my experience. While I visited Khyryk multiple times, it all made sense from a plot perspective and flowed obviously. And I never reached a point such as you have where I was completely stymied. Given the wide range of possible explanations Jeff would be best placed to identify the problem. I'd be interested in the answer.
  4. Either that or has access to a hint book...
  5. While your circumstances may differ, I can confirm that it is possible to obtain the key as a loyalist without killing Agatha. I recall that the path I took was to ask Khyryk for assistance or guidance multiple times.

Given that my general style of play is to kill all and sundry the canisters just streamline the process - none of this useless blather, asking about their health and their mother and how things have been going - would you like a nice cup of tea dear? Can I fetch your dressing gown? Afterall, if you are an uber-shaper what do you care for the throughts of puny creatures? In sum, you are already corrupt - you might as well make sure that you are absolutely corrupt. It does not in anyway prevent you from finishing the game.
  7. But what about the combined areas with two maps in the one zone - did you think about that? Does 91 zones include or exclude those?
  8. I chose Shaper. But Shapers are pretty weedy. This means that they are not inherently easy to play because you need to be careful that nobody can attack you. Blink or get lazy and you may find yourself having to reload. Your creations are useful for most compbat, but if ever an area effect spell gets cast you are frequently toast (Aura of Flames - Mmm, yes! I like my Shaper all crispy thank you!).

Kind of a hassle to do all of that mouse moving and clicking ( i don't use the keys, to far apart) I'm not sure what your problem is - the computer generally has two input devices the mouse and keyboard. If you don't use the keyboard you will have to use the mouse. Inherent in using the mouse as an input device is clicking and draging. For many things it is not the most efficient input device - try typing a letter just using the mouse and some kind of character selection matrix. Frankly, I find it trivial to hit 'a' or 'b' or whatever when I want to pick up something from the ground. My left hand is on the keyboard anyway, 'a' is right on the home row, 'b' is a whole centimetre away from my pointer finger. I must be missing something...

  11. There are multiple explanations for this: 1. It wouldn't be interesting otherwise. Do you wonder why there are so few books written about ordinary people doing ordinary things? Arthur Miller was revolutionary when he wrote 'Death of a Salesman' 2. Think about all the times you die. In actuality, you are an amazingly lucky and seemingly skilled individual if you string together all the tight situations you somehow survive to get to the end of the game. You manage to display prescience on a scale that is unimaginable to ordinary NPCs - casting bless just before the critical fight, never walking into an ambush unprepared, always having the right item available - sheer genius! Consider playing the game where death is final? Do you think that you would move so fast or so recklessly? (e.g. Compare it with Angband the way it is meant to be played) 3. You succumb to temptation and suck down experimental drugs like they were candy - it's much hader if you don't indulge in 'canisters'. A standard comic book motif is the genetic mutation caused by random forces turning Joe Average into a superhero - why should this be any different? 4. You actually have some inate potential for greatness that is only revealed by trying circumstances. This is, fundamentally, related to point 1 and brings this list full circle. Should you wish to play a game where you don't achieve much of anything and can't defeat any large monsters I would suggest you write it yourself. I don't think there is a very big market for them.

Why is it that Ambrosia Software manage to make games with editors (the Escape Velocity series) that generate huge numbers of scenarios that are generally mutually contradictory and they are still wildly popular, but here there is an obsession that all scenarios must fit into a seamless whole? I find the distinction between the two communities striking.
  13. Of course, one could go with the much simpler "Arch-incantor" if one was looking for a masculine form. Back-formation leads to such wonderful oddities of speech. My personal favourite is the Australian habit of saying orientated, or worse reorientated. Orient works just as well and is easier on the lips (and ears).
  14. Qu'est que ce? Ia mh ain gsometrou ble read ingy o urpost can yourepos tinenglish Of course you could read this post and put two and two together - if that was your thing. And anyway, what is this cystal soul thing? It sounds like a very nasty disease you can get from poor hygene. You know those things can get to be the size of basketballs and you need very skilled surgeons to remove them. Remember, wash your hands after feeding your dogs.
  15. >I am ashamed to admit that in fact I missed that secret room. I fell off that rugs trap and never made it back. I wouldn't be ashamed to admit it - the same thing happened to me. (But maybe I have no shame ) Indeed, it strikes me as a very easy thread to loose and picking it up again at the end of the game when you realise you missed something is very difficult. I resorted to using the Walkthrough to work out exactly what I had missed when I couldn't find the third crystal even after killing Garzhad and getting the 'Game Over' text.
  16. It is very explicit when it happens and so I suspect that you haven't got the right evidence. Certainly when I played A2 the first time it was the last thing I did - after killing Garzhad when I was cleaning things up. This suggests to me that it is easy to miss. At any rate, there is a section in the NE corner on the upper floor of Limoncelli's lair where the floor drops away and it dumps you outside - you need to search the cabinets in the room on the other side of this corridor. If you haven't done this, do so and everything else should follow. If you don't have the specific quest to go to Pyrog's you won't be able to get in - I take it you don't...
  17. I have just cleared that nest out but was wondering if it was possible to do it any earlier than I actually did. It seemed to me that you needed dispel barrier (and move mountains) to do it. And to get dispel barrier you needed to kill Limoncelli. The type of party that can kill Limoncelli is going to seriously outclass the brigands in the honeycomb. At least that is what I found. Is it possible to either do it without dispel barrier or get dispel barrier earlier?
  18. 10 reasons: 1) Ultima I 2) Ultima II 3) Ultima III 4) Ultima IV 5) Ultima V 6) Ultima VI 7) Ultima VII 8) Ultima VIII 9) Because it\'s traditional 10) Because I can\'t kill Alaric
  19. I don't know if I'd refer to it as a trash pit, but there is one through a secret door and behind a wall in someone's house. At any rate, rather than giving more ambiguous spoilers here you can go to the (old site for) Avernum Annotated Maps that are linked to at the top of this discussion board to remove all doubts.
  20. Way back when, it was always a 'challenge' in the Ultima series to kill Lord British. So, apropos of nothing, has anyone tried to kill King Micah in Avernum 1? Any luck? Any haunted dreams?
  21. I did this by accident the first time I went to the castle. I had the Token and all, but took a clockwise route when exploring the place rather than an anti-clockwise route. Thus, I was kicking down doors (sounds so much better than picking locks or casting unlock doors) just wondering where it all led and stumbled into the throne room ("Whoah! What's this doing here" I thought to myself - stuck on the back of some tiny bedroom or whatever). Had a bit of a rap with the king and then walked out. At this point the guard asked me for my Token. It was pretty funny really - talk about closing the barn door after the horse has bolted. I've done it a few other times where you go into an area the back way and then when you go out the front it gives you the pre-programmed "entry" text or whatever. In one case it was after I slaughtered all the occupants of the room - it made the description rather amusing that time as well (can't remember the details). Maybe its because I'm left-handed and don't explore the right way... And maybe that's also the reason I have to edit this post twice to get it gramatically correct.
  22. It depends where you found the other 5 But from the sound of it you are missing the one you can get in Bahssikova itself. Did you get one there?
