Do normal horseshoes boost your stats in any way? How does the training you receive from that lady in the woods help you? It says she can boost melee or ranged skills, but those stats don't directly exist in the advancement tree. Is this a behind-the-scenes boost? If so, who does it affect, your main character or all characters?

Yes, but Spiderweb games does not reach anywhere near as wide an audience as Steam does. Steam is more of a distributor than a producer, really. And yes, I do know that Valve makes games. But Steam sells games from all genres. They can afford the price reduction.

As others have said, it is your preferences that really count. But if you want my recommendation: Exile 3! It has the same superb plot as Avernum 3, but the gameplay is far superior. More spells, more party members, more retro. I wasn't too impressed with the last 3 Avernum games. If you like Geneforge, start with the first one. And don't get Nethergate. To me, it is a mishmash of other Spiderweb games that really doesn't work. It is the only Spiderweb game I could not bring myself to even finish.

Protective Circle(PC) really didn't have much point. Except for that it looked cool. That's why I used it sometimes, particularly when the enemy wasn't too threatening and I could look at the pretty colors...

Actually, that is another reason I like it. Being forced to run and not just walk around picking up every piece of chainmail you find enhances the atmosphere of this part. Not that I think this is a good idea for every situation, mind you. There are some BoA scenarios which I felt did this too much. That tends to get frustrating. This struck the perfect balance.
