  1. Levels aren't an in-character thing. Your character has the makings of a great mage but has untapped potential. As you go through the game, you tap that potential. Besides, who said his dream was realistic? The other people in the game certainly don't seem to think so
  2. Working on my scenario - haven't gotten much done this month, just a few towns unfortunatly due to all the distractions, but I'm hot at work.....three outdoors sections finished, the Tower of Magi is nearly finished (I might add more later, but it's already ****ing huge due to it's importance in the story) And the first dungeon is complete. Working on special encounters. For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, I'm making a scenario called Archmage Ascension, about a singleton mage who is trying to prove himself and become the one true Archmage of Avernum.....and the world. Goes from level 1 to truly epic levels (It should cap off somewhere in the 150-175 range) with really high-level spells as well......if I can make it that big. Trying not to get too ambitious
  3. Dont forget that you sell 5 levels of Mage Spells, more than any warrior needs, in A1, and Magery in another one. By the way, are you the same Solberg from The Lyceum? (the one involved in the controversy)
  4. I've started working on my scenario ^.^ Hopefully I'll send it in soon, too.
  5. Awright! I downloaded it and it works great. I'm happy to announce here and elsewhere that my work on my scenario has officially begun ^.^
  6. Argh, this IS an old topic isnt it. Stupid forum glitch reported it as being a week old. Hmph. Either way......if Jeff won't/cant fix the problem, why cant we? Surely someone who plays this game has the technical know-how.
  7. Very encouraging. Keep up the good work Spidweb Not finding all the scenarios here has been a pain.
  8. Yeah. he stands on the Xian Anvil to get extra height so he can command more attention. That or he's just a crazy-ass bastard with nothing better to do than make crappy items. Actually, a couple of the items were semi-decent. The Xian Rock = always came back, and mass-produced rocks, so it meant infinite ammo back before we had Slings to do that for us > The Xian Coins produced maybe 10 coins a day, which sucks of course, unless you rush and get them at the start of the game and keep them for the rest. In which case you might get 1000 coins for your trouble, by the end of the game the Xian Plant mass produced plants that sold for 20-30 coins apiece. The Xian Skull made sure you stayed awake while playing A3 I find that usefull And if I remember correctly, the Vest/Pants were tradeoffs. Personally I think he tried to curse the items, and due to thier poor quality, they ended up kinda-sorta enchanted (Instead of when a person tries to enchant a poor items and it ends up cursed) And then he gave it to the adventureres because he didnt like them. They made him stop his research to teach them. Bastards.
  9. Yeah, "X" is the Xian skull, wearing Xian Slacks, the Xian Vest, using the Xian Plant for his main body and the Xian Rock as his lower abdomenin. The robes must just be a little extra thing thrown in.
  10. Your wrong. I'm a BoA player/designer. I'm not happy to hear this. I'm astounded. I'm amazed. I'm in awe. It's beyond happy
  11. Hm. Interesting points. Would I be wrong in saying that one way to make a boss battle realistic and tense would be to remove the "Cough" thing that saves your ass when you hit 0 HP? That way, the players actually need to watch out for big attacks, instead of letting a melee warrior fight the grim reaper face-to-face or whatnot, and just minor healing every time the warrior goes down to 0. Also, I remember that one of the funnest boss battles I fought involved three different enemies, one a healer, one a spellcaster, one a fighter, each with different immunities (So you basicly had to guess and check which spells would hurt them) I remember the healer was constantly reviving the other two, but would heal herself whenever injured. Would something like that be construed as annoying, or fun? Personally I loved the challenge.
  12. We've played some different games then Thuryl I've played some console RPG's with long, boring final bosses. This I admit. What I'm talking about is making a final boss battle that isn't too long, or short, and is hard. A battle that really threatens the player, a tense and difficult fight. I'm sure you know what I mean Any suggestions on how to go about that?
  13. Eh, dont be too sure about that Kelandon ^.^ People could just throw questions out here, he could answer, and then some scenario designer could pop around and get inspiration. for example, heres a random question designers might ask: What's a good way to make a really TENSE boss battle, almost like a final boss in a video game like Final Fantasy?
  14. Question: I've been told that you can make a total of four special abilities for the game. Are those special abilities like Go Berzerk or whatnot, or are those special abilities like Parry/Blademaster/Lethal Blow/Riposte?
  15. Actually, I've been thinking on this exact topic myself, and I have a question for you. Whats the level of your scenario? If its a level 1 scenario, you want them to make new characters anyway, so theres no real problem with forcing them to delete thier characters. Meanwhile if its above level 1, you want them to be bringing in pre-used characters, so quite naturally they wont want to delete. M's suggestion is one I thought over, and it would work, but of course, no technique is infallible against the stupid Character Editor. So if a player is really determined, they can get past that. But if they do and the scenario's no good for them, it's thier own damned fault isn't it? And it's because of that that simply saying "This is made for 1-2 characters, any more will ruin the scenario" actually will probably be sufficient. Regardless of that, M's suggestion has another flaw - it requires you take away the revive spell, hence weakening clerics. Not a problem in Singleton, but if theres 2 players in the party, it's still a problem. If you want a two-person party, the best suggestion available is to notify the player that the scenario only works if they have two people, and simply not let them into the scenario until thier party is at 1-2. Make them start on a tiny island with a portal, and the portal wont teleport them until they have 2 or less chars. Thats my only suggestion for 2 party members, that are above level 1.
  16. Thanks Thuryl, he was starting to confuse me by the way, if I didn't know what a MEATSHIELD was, I shouldn't be playing RPG's or Action Adventures like these AT ALL, I should be off reading DnD 3rd edition and learning what they're all about and then going online to learn the slang. I mean, cmon. Everyone knows what Cannon Fodder and Meatshield means
  17. I'm aware of this. However, you have made the mistake of looking it up in english instead of mythology. You probably won't find working definitions for Mages, Magicians, Sorcerors, Chanellers, Gremlins, Imps, etc., in a dictionary either.
  18. Whether Incantatrix is gender based depends on the setting....Avernum never was clear on that. Some settings Arch-incantatrix means the ultimate mage, other setting Arch-incantatrix means the greatest mage of a specific sect. Apparently, whichever one your familiar with had it for females *Shrug* either way I got my point across. By the way everyone, please check by "Idea for Scenario" over in Blades of Avernum board, I really need some advice before I get too far into the scenario to rip apart my scripts.
  19. Yes, I tried that, except that sometimes you'll walk somewhere and immediatly an enemy will charge up to you - it's not like Avernums roguelike turn-based system. Someone can run right into melee range of your good old Agent before you can turn on Combat mode.
  20. He appears in all the avernum games (other than BoA!) And dont worry, my upcoming scenario includes him ^.^
  21. I like them both. I've studied both histories, have heritage on either side. I like the proffessional aspect of the Romans, and I like the added challenge of not having magic. Magic makes the game so easy.....try beating a band of blue-haired lunatics who have swords, shields, and magic, when all you've got is sword, shield, and SKILL on your side (But I play as a singleton, so of course I have the die-hard mentality.) Meanwhile, I like the Celts as a singleton also, because I like the idea of being that one man standing on one edge of the field, fifty armed soldiers rushing at him, cutting them down like they're nothing, frying massive numbers of them with a fireball. So hey....my 2 cents.
  22. I hope everyone enjoys my truly messed up poll I made it out of sheer boredom, please note it has nothing to do with my opinion of the game.
  23. These questions are simply to ascertain what you thought of the various mages in Avernum.....and of course to ask who you thought was craziest of them all! (Rone? X? Erika? Linda? Mahdavi? Rentar-Ihrno? So many choices!)
  24. I dont know, theres just something about Geneforge that seemed odd. I did find Agents to be harder to play, but it isnt the difficulty....I dunno, maybe I just need to try it again ^.^
  25. I see his point on the universal system. It would have been mayhem, he has a point. Neverwinter Nights showed how much trouble something like that can be, and it didn't even offer full customization. I can still see a way to make it work, but yeah, after reading the EZ boards post, I have a much firmer grasp of what this games supposed to be like thanks much. I'd still like to put in some new spells/skills for my scenario, simply because it'll be necessary for the first scenario I want to make (Check the Blades of Avernum - Idea for Scenario post)
