It was, uh, just for emphasis. Yes. Empf Fah Syz.Quote:Originally written by Gastric Freezing:

Vahnatai vahnatainis.
Also, Elves and Dwarves are commonly capitalized in fantasy fiction, as are Men, when the term is used to refer to humans. But that's an author's choice too, and apparently Jeff decided not to capitalize species names.

Vah. Nah. Tai.
Honestly, the only word that has been misspelled more often is Slithzerikai.

Imban is obviously married to Linda. Drakey and Mariann are two aspects of the same entity, and Jeff Vogel is in fact the eleventh incarnation of Vishnu, while Richard is the current head of the Bavarian Order of Illuminati.

And that's where the discrepancies are going to come in. But I won't be miffed unless he changes the name "Ermarian". That'd be nasty.

I've used Summoning on occasion, but only when I was out of spell points to do anything else (and low-level attacks wouldn't have done it).
I've found it can give you a brief edge if the opponents are too tough or deal too much damage in a single round. In high level environments, that additional turn you have to chug an invulnerability potion or deal ~200 damage with another spell can matter a lot. Create Illusions yields the best cost efficiency, because the meatshield doesn't need an excessive amount of health (more than likely they're going to die in one hit anyway). But with a faster, less strong opponent (say, 3 smaller attacks instead of one big one), additional hit points can be useful as well. It depends on the situation.
Edit: In BoA, of course there is the added bonus of summoning some monster the designer forgot to disable from summoning. I remember having a lot of fun with Goblin chieftains in Canopy...

Edit2: Of course, my point can't be impartially tested by a BoE/BoA arena run. The usefulness of Summoning directly depends on how it is used - and the AI uses it in a very dumb way.

Well, b and v *are* closely related in many languages...Quote:Originally written by chicho:

And no. -
Actually, I would say it makes more sense in the Avernum Trilogy for that reason - when the Priest spells are just about as destructive as the Mage spells, then what is the point of rejecting one of them?Quote:Originally written by chicho:
I think that joining the anama has much more sense in exile, because in avernum the offensive priest spells have been almost completely removed, in exile still is a LOT of good priest spells like curse all, ravage enemy, the great divine thud, the avatar, martyr shield(very funny but not that useful) and all the others that i forgot, and of course the incredible and awesome wound spell that just cant be resisted.
in a3 yhe only thing is the divine fire, aall demons and a lot of creatures are INMUNE to fire!
the smite is somewhat useful buit too weak, still better in a3 that in a1.and the divine retribution is great, but it can be resisted and only works in the living.
Chief Spider, did you seriously try to troll by ranting against a fictional religion? My my, what a funny place the world has become...

Cryptic comment of the day:
We really need to get that new RP started... ^__________^

My biggest wish for BoA - that the New Scenario released by Jeff goes more into the details of the planet/the Empire's history/something significant to the Avernum universe. Like Za-kazi run- sure, it's deemed by many to be the worst thing Jeff has ever released professionally, but it goes into the post-Avernum 3 state of Avernum. Namely, the Second Slith War. Sure, the Fourth Scenario will be chalked full of uniquely BoA features, but seeing something important happen or revealed would be nice.
Your BoA anticipating maniac, Necris OmegaAnd thus it came to pass that a project was started and never completed! Here's to two great years of the Encyclopedia, that wonderful project conceived on July 17th 2003 and almost updated/fiddled with almost every two months!Quote:Originally written by Arancaytar:
Edit: I assume you're referring to the history 'book' Scipio, since our scenarios won't take Jeff's time.
We could all write it together, send it to him for approval and he'd maybe put it up on the site.
And the process of checking if the facts are right wouldn't take as long as writing the thing.
Sounds interesting, doesn't it?
Sorry. Won't be doing this again. -
For half a year I have been trying to design "starry void" graphics for BoA that look remotely authentic. Needless to say, it's not half as good as this.

Please, please put those graphics up at the Louvre!

Avernum is an antique name for the Underworld, iirc. It is as much under copyright as the names Anaximander, Erika and Hawthorne are.Quote:Originally written by Interior Analog:
You could sure be sued for "Avernum" and probably "slthzerikai" and "vahnatai." Nephilim are biblical, so you get a pass on that one.
Jeff wouldn't bother to sue you, but he could.
—Alorael, who certainly doesn't mean to imply that underground worlds are copyrighted. If anyone gets that, it's probably Jules Verne.
I've seen "Slithzerikai" used in other settings, but it is probably original to Spiderweb Software, as well as Vahnatai.
That said, "Ermarian" is fan-invented and therefore - thankfully - not subject to copyright. -
Why, what's so awful about Midori Province?Quote:Originally written by Thuryl:

Everywhere I can. Friends. Books. Movies. Place names I get from atlases. The provinces in Exile III are named after women I've been ... ummmmmm .... intimate with. (Does that violate AOL TOS?) (Or just the bounds of good taste?) -
Ouch. Raise Logo somehow, I guess. I'm going to an exam in ten minutes, and doing a lot of hectic packing and catching trains after that, and I won't be online until Wednesday evening or possibly even Sunday. See you!

Well, I'm sure the water floors and terrains would be a useful addition to the graphics database. Even if it's technically hard (or impossible?) to make something like this in the actual game, it might be possible to make an underwater cutscene or some such...
Oh, and ef? I'm getting a 404 on the System here. Is it my PC, or do you get it too? It's been such a long time since our last big crash...

-
What are you referring to?

I have a cable connection from home that transmits around 100 Mbit/s (ie. 12.5 MB/s) in theory, in total. Partly due to the large number of users sharing it simultaneously, that usually works out to around 2.8-4 Mbit/s (350 to 500 K) for me.
Not much better than DSL, but much cheaper (3$ a month, 10GByte monthly transfer)

I don't recognize the name of Scott Evans... does he have a moniker he goes by as a designer? What did he make?
I voted TM and Kelandon just to be different - I like both your works, why can't you just... you know.

Edit: Ben - "Sensei", TM being TM, is the perfect word for it.

You seem to be unfamiliar with the purpose of discussion. A topic that can be answered swiftly is a dull topic, because there is no point in continuing to discuss on it.Quote:Originally written by Eagle, the author soul:
[QB]The reason why I call this a dull topic is because there are very few people who knows the answer... if there are anyone. Perhaps if we asked a game history profesional (I belive there is such an occupation nowadays.) we could find an answer on that question.
EDIT: I made a couple of google searches. Found nothing. :|
EDIT II: I made even more google searches. I found out that the first scenario editor may have been for Warcraft but there are conflicts.
Google hits:

I think I found another set of maps at http://www.wam.umd.edu/~kks/index.html .
But it's really a pity that site went down.
Edit: The maps only show the Fort Draco/Motrax area, Fort Avernum/Cotra and the Honeycomb/Mertis/Tower of Magi. Fortunately, all I needed was the Tower of Magi.

I just tried to view Silver's Annotated Maps of Avernum, and noticed that the server returns a 404. Does anyone else get this, and if yes, for how long has it been down? Are there any other versions of these maps online?
-
This is Geneforge 3? I was so sure it was some Blades of Avernum scenario that had self-made wands...

As well as the content of the error message of course.

This is very misleading to anyone who has played Ancient Domains of Mystery...
