In 1.0 some creatures (cryodrayks) can be ridicilous strong. You could easily shape 1OOOhp creatures.

Yes it does the same in A1.
I've never found a teacher for the pathfinderskill in Avernum but my memory is a little vague about that.

(you may not realize this, but if you have high enough leadership you can get permission to leave the first isle provided you have seen the creator, even if you haven't killed it (go close enough to get message about seeing it, but not close enough for it to talk to and attack you)).
