After 10 loops a hole finally opened up... Like Willy Nelson... on the road again... Or was that the muppets?

Like the title says... I am stuck.  I defeated the illusions, the zombies and shades.  I was able to get to the second building where I defeated arachnid illusions and an NPC whose name I forget.  There were no treasures in the boxes.  WHen I left the building, the path closed to it.  I am now caught in a loop of forest with nothing to help me escape.  It seems I must navigate this to reach the other parts of Ahriel.  ANy hints or suggestions are welcome...
