  1. Even after the remake, the original still holds up. With it's clunky UI and design, I'm having a good time playing the game, which may sound odd.

I never finished the entire Geneforge series (I'm sorry). I haven't played 5. I want to play the whole series though, and I started to relive that dream. I feel it would be weird to play the Geneforge 1 remake and "degress" into the Geneforge 2 engine, so I'm starting from the original Geneforge game. If all goes as planned, I'll get back to the Geneforge 1 remake and be able to further appreciate the improvements made to the game.

This post doesn't have much of a point other than just existing. Not like these forums are starving for activity to begin with.

  2. I'm nearing the end of my torment playthrough and have a big wonder. To save skill points, I mostly relied on the Sage Lore trait for Arcane Lore kind of things. I found it weird when I first came across a book I didn't have enough arcane lore for. Using the editor, I had to increase my arcane lore quite a bit. That's how I found out that sage/Vahnatai lore doesn't apply to everything.

I didn't mind it so much until I realized there's a crystal that teaches Resistance that doesn't check Sage Lore. I kind of really want that one point of resistance for some reason. With the way my skill points, I can't temporarily increase arcane lore and restore it back to what it was before.

    Just feels a bit weird.

Maybe I should have put a question in here, or something.

  3. The brilliant part is: If you are into the general Spiderweb Software formula, there are oh so many games to lose yourself into.

Oh, every time I hear the word "neat", my mind instantly goes to the GIFTS.

  4. I've been trudging along on torment. That start of the game was really rough. Things got easier as I progressed. The giant/Troglodyte plague was actually quite easy. I kept checking options to make sure the difficulty was still set to torment.

I kind of hit a wall though. A golem shaped wall. The elemental golems can take out most of my party in two or three cone attacks. Should I have invested in hardiness for everyone? I'd find it hard to decide on what to not put points into so I could have gone into hardiness. My spell casters have maxed resistance. Ward of elements doesn't help too much.

  5. Has anything else on your system changed in that week between playing? I'm not a smart person, but it sounds either like file corruption, or something with the  write/read permissions on the files/folders.

  6. I would feel weird changing the difficulty in the middle of the game. It just doesn't sit right with me. I started over on Torment and it is quite the challenge, but doable so far. I have thoughts, or aspirations to have finished all the Avernum games on Torment or the equivalent.

For a reference, or something. The first time I played EFTP, it was on normal. In my recent replaying, I went with hard. It was more difficult than I expected. I made it work in the end, but I had to fight for progress. The first time with CS, I restarted partway to start over on hard and finished it. In my replay, hard was fairly easy except for some spots.

  7. Being somewhat new feels weird. It's like I'm looking into a building that has had many awesome parties over the decades, but the building is now mostly quiet. Or something like that. I mostly wanted to make my 100th post here.

  8. I'm replaying this game and I'm at a point where it feels too easy. I'm only playing on hard. I am almost at the filth factory and there isn't much challenge to the fights anymore. I forget if the difficulty ramps up again or just stays steady easyish.

I suppose i could just start over on torment, just to see how that goes. I have a mental image in my head of torment being too hard though.

  9. Usually, when an item is worth more than another similar item, it is better in some way. An instance where this doesn't seem to be the case is with the bows in the topic title. Lemonwood (mmm lemon) Bow is worth 4 times more than the Crude Longbow. The Crude Longbow seems to be much better, it even has a +10% to crit chance. Is this just an example of more expensive not being better? Or am I missing something about Lemonwood Bows.

  10. You'll probably get a bunch of different answers from different people on this. I don't feel I can properly answer this, but I can share how I got into the games. I started with the original Avernum, when I bought the bundle on GoG. If you can deal with the UI it is a great game. The Avernum 1 remake could also be a good starting spot. Or Avadon, or even the recent Geneforge: Mutagen. Again, a hard question for me to answer.

  11. Back in my day, the inventory only had 16 slots. The amount of weight you could carry included everything in the inventory, not just what you were wearing. Playing as a low strength character was... don't want to say annoying, but did have to be dealt with. Living tools themselves weighed 1lb each.

Now I have a question about the Avernum bundle. Does the one on GOG (https://www.gog.com/game/avernum_the_complete_saga) include the updated versions of 1-3? It says it includes the "original versions" so maybe that answers my question... if that's the case, is there a bundle where I can get the updated versions? And is it preferable to get it from a different source (i.e., one that pays more to Spiderweb)?

That bundle doesn't include the Avernum 1 - 3 remakes. I assume buying the games straight from this site is the best way if you want Jeff to get most of the money. I don't know much about any cuts that other stores like Steam take.

Edit: Also, hi Chopkinsca! I guess you're new around here, so... welcome!

Thanks. It's weird to be so new here.

  13. Hello old person. I mean, long time resident of these boards. I'm not assuming your age.

Avernum 4 - 6 are great and well worth a purchase/playthrough. If money is tight, they come in the Avernum 1 - 6 bundles on those fancy game sites. I feel like I robbed Jeff because I got 6 amazing games for less than $20.

Geneforge Remake is a grand old time.
