Which is why you made Blades, right?

One of the elements in RPGs I find enjoyable is book-style Machiavellian intrigue. Stuff like the way you join the Scimitar (I'm talking E1 here), like how you find that cave with a heap of chopped up Empire soldiers, and a Scimitar carved on the wall.

Or those epic battles in E3, where the dialogue describes some horrific scene and then ends with an OK button labelled with something like 'Oh dear...'

I think the A4 engine gives a much more personal feel to the world as well, that feeling that you're never really outdoors is cool, the fear that those pesky Goblins may just chase you all the way down to the front gate of the damn fort is actuality, rather than just, well, alluded to.

I agree with Al on the RPGs-being-fun-when-you're-pushed-into-a-role thing as well, just that it's a problem finding things-to-be-pushed-into that everyone finds cool and exciting (KOTOR *definitely* delivered on this, with KOTOR2 destroying it entirely).

  2. Hmmm... I started off making a custom party this time around playing A4, mostly because I wanted one of those new fangled Theifmages™. But when I tried to re-create just the simple soldier class, I found myself short of skill points! What's the deal? Why do the pre-made classes get more skill points than the custom ones? Or am I wrong, and was just really tired (or just generally stupid) at the time?

    Just seemed weird to me.

Hmmm... I'll backtostart and have a play around, maybe I'm missing something obvious. Thanks Thuryl.

  4. How do you trash them?

I'm level 23 and these pylons just freeze me and zap me to death. Arg! Can you pick them off outside their range with area effect spells or something? (ie. targeting the space just before them so they can't reach you?)

Some pointers would really be appreciated, I've already tried rushing through sneakily using haste to dart around corners and keep out of sight of them, but I keep getting stuck in places where I can't leapfrog to more cover and having to revert to a save... Maybe I just need to do something else first, but I feel like I've just about done everything else already. You're gonna die Rentar! Man, I really feel like revenging Erika.

  5. Ok, so it was that little chamber near Grindstone...

Is there anyone that directs you to the place (apart from the fisherman near there that describes it's location?). Hmmm, just did the third then, and the conversation options suggested to me that I (as in my party) had no idea what was going on...

    Thanks guys!

  6. Hey,

I'm busy bashing my way through A4 (and thinking it's awesome, by the way) but I'm, a little worried I've missed something.

I was cleaning out the tunnels north of Fort Dranlon and I found a weird magically locked door that had a map-like thing on it that directed me to a tunnel north of Formello.

So I went there, and it was some testing thing, sort of like what the Vahnatai make you do in Crystal Souls, however, it seemed it was the *second* of the tests. Where the hell is the first one? I figure it must be in the north-east quadrant of Avernum (still keep going to call it Exile, A4 is really reminding me of the 'old days'). But I'm pretty sure I've explored everywhere up there...

It could be that I *did* do it, just that I don't remember - I sort of had a break between hitting the registration barrier, and getting the full vers, and I don't remember many details of then... If it's the chamber just west of Grindstone, then I've done that already. Grrr! I can't remember it though!

So, if someone can really tentatively hint me in the direction of where this testing set of quests starts off, I'd be much obliged.

    Thanks heaps,

    Md.

  7. Any mac user who read the topic of this... um... topic, probably rotfl - for want of a better expression.

Because the preminant graphic converter for mac (which coincidentaly has a red[ish] logo and is made by a german company) is called GraphicConverter. Shame it's not freeware though!
