  1. Has anyone successfully assigned heal ability to a creation type? I have tried setting cr_default_script to healnpc for fyoras, but I never got the ability to activate.
  2. To my mind, Geneforge has the most engaging and original story, and not a few tactical challenges as well.
  3. At any rate, I'm certain there are more fun ways to get life in jail, if that's what you're looking for.
  4. Healing a scripted ability, in mobhealer.txt; I think though it can only be assigned to a particular character rather than a creation type.
  5. Ask her about recipe. But I seem to remember you have already been to the monastery.
  6. Apologies if I mis-used the terminology. Wine is a reverse engineered rewrite of the windows OS functionality - as such, it imitates windows. Last time I checked (10 years ago, I admit) Wine was an abbreviation for "WINdows Emulator". Virtualbox provides a VM environment under which you install an actual windows OS (from whatever disc you have lying around). That's the difference I was trying to convey. Edit: Just tried to read the wikipedia entry for Emulator. Got about 3 paragraphs in and decided it's TLDR. Guess I will never know the difference.
  7. Yes, and the Diseased Mushrooms are the ones from the Great Cave, not the Eastern Gallery, which has Befouled Mushrooms. Edit: All the mushrooms can be easy to miss. If you don't hit g at the right moment...
  8. If running under an emulator (wine) doesn't help, have you tried a virtual machine (e.g. virtualbox)?
  9. Guys, I hope you are right. Edit: Playing too much Avernum 6 must have given me an unduly pessimistic world view
  10. I consider myself cautioned by your PDN, and I have no interest in flamewars any way. But let's just point out who exactly it is that has been financing the US deficit lately. And that essentially is a zero sum game: China lends the money, the US spends it. China is playing the long game, deliberately neglecting its domestic populace (as you allude) in order to buy global economic & political influence.
  11. Well I'd say that the archer is not dangerous at all, since (assuming you cast bless party at the start of every fight like a sane person would) they will never damage your party in anyway... I'd be far more worried about the wizards who can cast firestorm and actually hurt you... So basically I DISAGREE that the archer is the most dangerous. Happy now?
  12. Is this Exile or Avernum? In Exile, you cast Bless Party three times, and your party is basically immune to physical damage...
  13. In the long run, the protests will make no difference. In fifty years' time, China will be calling the shots. Think we have no influence now? Just wait.
  14. Are captchas needed? You could ask quiz questions about Avernum, surely most bots/spammers would be stumped when asked to name Solberg's cat?
  15. Archery is fairly useless in Avernum 1-3, and you'd do well to take a cue from the default party which has a mixture of character types. Especially if you don't have a priest to heal yourself, you will die quickly. Each individual character should specialise in 1-2 skills but make sure the party covers everything. Expert players do play with a single character or just one character type for a challenge, but it's not advised until you're already familiar with the game. If you found the first trilogy hard, then you won't find the second trilogy any easier.
  16. Obviously you're a hoarder. Much of that stuff is probably useless, sell it off enjoy your prosperity. Turn all the herbs into knowledge brews. Have you been to the Tower of Zkal yet?

Most use of the number pad I have seen is people using it to enter long sequences of numbers into the computer, for which a majority would prefer to use their right hand. Typically you have a hard copy print out perched on top of the letters part of the keyboard, and use the right hand to type the numbers while reading them off the paper. Personal computers with number pads have been around for at least 20 years, and most business/government systems have historically been very poor at transfering data from one system to another or from customer/supplier to their own system, relying on a lot of manual data entry. This is changing now, thanks to the internet, but the keyboard design was actually more appropriate for that era. Edit: A real life example was a client I worked at, where there was no connection between the call center that took customer details, and the back end data processing center. The call center literally had to print out the details, fax them to the processing center, where some poor souls had to type them in again. This is a 100% verifiable example in the public domain (if you look hard enough)

  19. Can anyone remember, what spell in A1 was replaced by Cloud of Blades in A2/A3?
  20. I use left shift, and left ctrl. The others might just as well not be there. I usually only hit caps lock by accident, it's very rare indeed to find a time when it's actually useful. The databases I use have field names in camelCase, and I use lower case for sql statements, and for xml and html tags, so caps lock doesn't even get a look in really.
  21. Given that English is not the OP's first language, their keyboard probably has a different layout.
  22. Version history is on the tech support page, here.
  23. I sense random letter changes for the fun of it. Why else would we be discussing a game called Awernum?
