Just seeing the difference between "Learn Spray Acid" and "Improve Spray Acid" for 2 different characters can mislead you, since points from a spellbook are tracked separately from trained points. Think there is a genuine difference. In my copy (Windows version, downloaded directly from SW) training the second level of a spell has the same cost as the first level. For example from Throndell I trained my priest in Mass Healing, the first level cost 800, second level for the same character also costs 800. Finally, the windoze users get a break
  2. That sounds rather like one of those xkcd diagrams, with Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs on one axis, and Distance I'm Prepared to Walk on the other
  3. It maybe depends on the conditions you have to walk in. 10 miles in a blizzard, or across a desert, probably not. 10 miles walk by the river on a nice summer afternoon, absolutely, I would do the walk just for the pleasure of the journey. Still, walking along beside a busy road is not one of the more pleasant situations IMO. Cycling might be better.
  4. Avernum: Escape from the Wit, a place where you can take refuge from forum posting games
  5. I think it's the autocensor that has been messed around with, e.g. when you type Exile it displays as Avernum. Which is wrong on multiple levels.
  6. The subject says E3, but the post says A3. If you meant A3, it should install ok *if* you download the latest version of the demo from the spiderweb website (it installs fine on my 64 bit windows). However, any versions you had downloaded a few years ago, or received on a CD-ROM, might not work. If you have problems with your game being unregistered, just e-mail spiderweb explaining (and giving the name & address from which you originally registered) and they will give you a new registration code. To avoid doubt, E3 cannot be installed on a 64 bit windows, for that you need to use a virtual machine (e.g. VirtualBox). Edit: Alright can we stop messing with the boards now? It's getting confusing.
  7. #2 is from the last episode of Blake's 7, Avon confronts Blake (it doesn't end well).

  9. Same thing happened to me, as described in Edit #2, except it was the character in the 2nd slot.

  11. It is due to your opinions; as soon as you get that message ("You may have a harder time dealing with them now") you are locked out of Awakened shops forever, even changing your reputation to pro-servile won't fix it. A new stuff done flag is set when you visit Medab with reputation >=115, and it cannot be reset in game. You can fix it with shift+D, entering SDF 17 10 0 and SDF 17 11 0.
  12. I still don't really understand what you're trying do here. Intelligence does not make your spells better, nor give you access to new spells, it just gives you more spell energy (and essence).
  13. What exactly is it you need, more spells or better spells? Either way, at least one of the character editors allow you to raise a specific stat. See the links in the Geneforge 4 strategy central thread.
  14. I think it's also likely Jeff himself restrains the art, since he wants the games to be family-friendly. After all, he is marketing to a lot of teens who rely on their parents to make payment. In terms of demographics, I would guess that the majority of customers are teenaged or young adult males. But not exclusively. Anyway some of the male clients might like the 'nearly nude' men as well, who knows.

  16. Thanks Stareye. Fyi a couple of line breaks are missing, e.g. before imdrained.
  17. I can't get a purchase on this topic, somehow.

What, will the line stretch out to the crack of doom? Not sure anyone has ever described the Ring cycle as fanfic though...

  21. On the fourth day of Vlishmas, My Shaper shaped for me Four battle betas Three ur-glaahks Two growling thahds And a wingbolt in a dead tree. Edit: See, unlike Alorael, I don't know the song that well and am easily confused by syllables
  22. Yes, it will work if you copy the registered version of the prefs file from your desktop to your laptop. Alternatively you can first install the registered version from the CD and then reinstall using the latest demo, the game should stay registered. (Backup the registered prefs file first in case!)
  23. First let's clarify what we are talking about. Avernum 4 is the best example because it shares the same world as Avernum 1 (or A:EFTP). Avernum 4 forces linearity by erecting various obstacles that confine you to a particular region until you are "ready" to move on. E.g. you can't leave Formello region until you get permission, you can't get past the Silvar bridge until you are given permission, etc. There's even a bridge that's initially broken to keep you trapped, but supposedly get repaired later. It was the same in Avernums 5 & 6, and Geneforge 3, 4 & 5. Whereas in Avernum 1, 2 (chapter 4) & 3, and Geneforge 1 & 2, you could go pretty much anywhere you wanted the only real limit being survivability. Therefore this is what I have suggested: given the "barriers" in discussion are nothing more than SDF checks at certain gates/bridges, it would be straight forward to program in an addition override that allows you through if a "don't fence me in" game option was set. Of course, in order for this to not break the game, the plot would have to be written with a bit less linearity. Which is what a lot of us would prefer, in fact. Jeff rightly points out that he doesn't want to lose customers by making it too easy to die in his games by accidentally wandering in to the wrong area. I am just trying to suggest a way this could be done without forcing a 100% linear plot.

But the newer games do have the barriers, which a lot of us dislike, and it would be great if they were optional. Edit: Obviously, Avernum 2 literally does have barriers in Chapter 1; however Chapter 4 is completely open and that's by far the biggest part of the game.
