ok either I'm going crazy, or I'm stuck or both. I'm playing Avernum2 crystal souls

I'm in the vanathai river rapid dark journey place, and when I get to the I think its called the ruined fort, the one with the wheel, I have to use a stone shatter spell (I only had 2 of these). used 1, went in, cleared the place, then had to go out to the boat, but the wall rebuilt itself. so I had to use my 2nd scroll to get out, now I can't get back in (and thus can't open the gate/porticullis. I was also stuck with the barriers where you come upon 2 soldiers from the Empire, and the guy in the circle (surrounded by barriers). only had 2 barrier dispels, "wasted" them both, was stuck there (so I moved on to the rapids and I'm now going bald pulling my hair out.

can someone _please_ help? thank you!
