  1. For the record, I have no idea how The Corruption was created. I considered figuring it out, but I realized it was much more fun to write when I didn't know.

I REALLY enjoyed writing everything in The Corruption.

    - Jeff Vogel

corruption is the best thing from the series. then tawon is fascinating too.

too bad we get lots of the boring ones (wyldrim imo) and less of the more interesting ones (lands of titans, tawon, and corruption)

i am also fascinated by the collective consciousness of the corruption too

  2. i have noticed in avadon 3 (i am not sure about previous games, maybe there are, maybe there aren't) there are globes / scale model of the planet scattered all across the games (usually found in libraries, or other places of extensive knowledge). that indicate their culture is aware about the general shape of their planet, right?

but in one of the codex, we know that they haven't even travelled as far to other continents yet. how is their technology / knowledge is advanced enough without having the ability to cross over the ocean? that being said, knowing and measure the shape/circumference of the planet is possible without travelling far (as proved by the ancient middle eastern mathematician that discovered the earth is a sphere before anyone ever recorded did) but they have an actual model/globe of the planet and it seems to be accepted as general knowledge as it is seen in multiple countries (granted, only seen on places of knowledge like i said, indicating only the rich, influential and/or educated know about it, while your average peasant is completely ignorant). that kinda bugs me how are they confident and have the round planet become accepted across the continent when they never map much area outside of their own continent.

    so what do you think?

  3. Actually, I never had a problem with this fight. Do you take out the pillars and the side-drakons? Get the extra creations that are locked in rooms?

well at first, i didn't go out and recharge since the beginning of gazaki uss, i rushed trough it to the inner part, and got decimated.

so after that, i tried again, go back out, clear the fisrt area of gazaki-uss, go back and recharge/resupply, kick the side drakons, go back again, then face ghaldring and his 2 friends, while blowing up the backdoor.

it become considerably easier without 10 rothgoth, cyrodrayks, and war trall surrounding you.

anyway, i am gonna miss experiencing the series fresh again, i will absolutely replay the series sometime in the future, but the first time is always the most wonderful experiences, learning trough each games, while the world, characters, factions, and stories slowly unfold on you. this series is really jeff's magnum opus imo.

i love avernum and avadon, but i feel in term of gameplay, story, worldbuilding and overall design, geneforge is the best <3, shoud jeff ever does remake, i would buy em day 1

  4. it's the assault to inner gazaki-uss against ghaldring.

level 50 lifecrafter siding with astoria. i specialize in fire creation, have 2 drakons, 1 cyrodrayk and 1 kyshakk with me, all buffed and constantly healed, i also charm enemies creation. normal difficulty

i progress well, until for a while, then i always overwhelmed by the fight, with my essence running low, enemies keep destroying my creations and such, they attack from every direction possible and can spew 2-3 new creation every turn. every creation i killed or charmed, a new one appear.

i tried just focusing on ghaldring, still doesnt work, tried to kill the other drakons that shape and deactivating the pylons, still no avail, in the end all the creations overwhelms me.

i thought of searching other parts of the area to somehow find a way to weaken them, but i always gets killed. plus ghaldring's attack deals AOE damage that hurt all party and status effect, i just don't have the resource to heal/cure/charm/defend at the same time. the fight just go on until all items (like rods, spores, batons, etc) ran out and everything died

the other 3 shapers are pretty much useless as they just stand at the entrance sending weak creations that arent any help at all.

  5. reading his last blog post:

I Also Have Reached My Own Limits

However, the Avadon games have also reached the limits of what I am capable of holding in my single brain. They are the limit for how complex I game I can make without going mad. There's just too many characters, story threads, and so on. After a few months of keeping everything balanced and in my head and making sense, it gets exhausting.

One of the great pleasures in my job is finishing a game and being able to forget everything I've had to hold in my mind, ready for fast access. It's like putting down a heavy weight. I'm really looking forward to letting Avadon drift away. It's been like having to have a second family, only in my head. A weird, dysfunctional, non-existant family. I want it to fade away and leave a blank canvas, that I can fill with other fun stuff.

And, in Avadon's sprawling messiness, I think we made something really neat. Among all of the treasure hunting and epic battles, this is a story about running a fading Empire. You have borders to protect and unlimited power to do so. Will you be cruel or merciful? Will you be dutiful to your country, or will you focus on power for yourself?

Avadon 3 is full of choices, and your decisions will lead to a multitude of possible outcomes. No cop-out twist endings. It won't all have been a dream. We will make sure that the series caps off with a satisfying ending.

We'll be starting an all-new series soon. When we do, it will still be a big, complex game, but it will be big and complex in a different way. At the very least, there will be fewer than 11 countries for you to keep track of.

i think his problem is trying to solo everything. i dunno, it is his business model, fast and cheap and that allow him to survive for 20 years, while raising a family of 2 daughters. that is really respectable.

but then again, as a selfish fan, i'd really like him to up the ante. it doesn't have to be big, maybe a team of 3-4 people working full time instead of going solo with freelance help. he as the main designer/writer to think up the general direction, lore and mechanics, while the rest take up the detail works, which as years goes by, he will be less and less capable. plus listening to the young minds and ideas might give him something fresh, and having people to help keeping the detail will be less taxing to his mind and health.

didn't he said he might do a kickstarter campaign someday?

  6. Actually what seems to be the biggest mistake was barring sucia island instead of nuking it back to the stone age. Had the shapers cleaned up the island with a flamethrower mopping up all mention of the Geneforge then the whole story would never have started. It was their secretive escape which lead to the centuries of buildup on the island which just needed any shaper to show up to unlock everything.

yeah. judging on the position of the island, it's kinda weird. if it's some super isolated, and hard to rreach island barring, might work. the problem is sucia (based on the ending) is only few miles off the coast of the mainline somewhere. they bar it with no real way to enforce it.

my theory is the shapers are too proud, and doesnt have the guts to destroy it. they value the discovery they made there and someday when they think they are ready, they will be back and seize control of it.

  7. i heard somewhere jeff said it's probably the last new ip. creating new stuff takes alot of work, and he's too old for that right now. after avadon 3: warborn he said he's just going to remake old games like geneforge, then retire. he should have taken an apprentice or something to continue his legacy :/

or maybe one of his daughters decide to follow her father's legacy and keep spiderweb soft alive :p

  8. to be fair, between greta and alwan, alwan is the more fanatic for me. especially in the end, if you side with the shapers, he decided to make the sect even more harsh in enforcing their rules. it is just the rebel in G4 has grown very dangerous and a threat to mankind as a whole.

it's pretty much segregated by 2 sides, human rebels, and creation rebels. in G3, they are at least still shown to work together, people opressed by shaper banding and fighting.

now another whole ideas like pirik's start to appear, and when the rebellion ends, humans and creation will separate, and honestly, they won't do much again the crazy drakons.

also, litalia is as crazy as those drakons she served. half of the destruction in G3 is caused by her reckless use of shaping magic.

Since when does the general populace matter ? Ellrah matters. So do Tuldaric and Pinner. Random awakened in Medab or Vakkiri ? Nah.

Disagree. In both G1 and G2 the Awakened are working from a flawed premise, that they can (want to) deal with the shapers as equals. A ridiculous stance born out of ignorance.

And in both games their ultimate plan to defend against the shapers is equally flawed.

Telling you to use the Geneforge so that you can deal with the shapers when that thing is the reason Sucia was barred makes sense how ? There was never any chance the shapers would deal with someone who used it. And let's not forget Ellrah's reaction once you actually do use it. Being scared at how you turned out. What the heck did he expect would happen ?

And don't get me started on the Barrier of the Wind in G2. Making drakons is bad enough as is, but not having any means to control them ? And giving them the ability to fly ? How is that not going to backfire ? Especially when the only person who could do something about it (Tuldaric) is right on the way to canister madness and doesn't really care about the Awakened anymore ?

The tragedy of the serviles. They never stood a chance. They were always dependent on others to give them what they wanted/needed.

makes sense too i guess. they went from shaper's slaves into drakon's lackeys. i think the servile is doomed from the very beginning. on their own, no matter how they train and enhance themselves, they will lose, obtaining help from more powerful creatures, they end up getting pushed too.

  9. idonotexist42's points are pretty much spot-on to what i feel too. in 1 and 2, we get "good moderate" faction that is the awakened. they are rational, reasonable, and avoids violence whenever they can. they fight for freedom in its very core.

now skip to 3 and 4. people with moderate view can't survive anymore. in the end, they have to pick sides. and like you said, between power hungry drakons, and tyrannical shaper, i'd choose shaper.

Actually, I would say starting with GF4, that I hate the shapers. The Rebels have a lot of blood in their hands, there's tons of warcrimes being commited from both sides, but the Rebels fight dirty against a Tyrannical empire that keeps species enslaved just because it's convenient and wants to wipe out different forms of sentient species just because they consider them dangerous. Yes, the Drakons are very, very dangerous. But the Rebellion is MORE than the Drakons as you've probably seen with GF5.

As such, while both sides fight dirty (Rebels fight dirtier), the rebels at least fight dirty to liberate slaves and topple a tyrannical, genocidal magical order while the Shapers fight in order to keep absolute control including control over creatures created subservient.

i haven't played 5 yet, but so far the rebels are dirtier. in 3, they razed town, terrorize townsfolk and pretty much throw them into starvation, and force them to join. shaper usually try to take control, but never destroy (unless it's clear that a faction is truly an opposition). towns taken by shaper don't necessarily flourish, but safe, as long you don't act against them. while how they treat creation sometimes disgusting, it's the lesser evil compared to rebels, playing with something they don't really know.

skip to G4, there are literally rebel faction that HATE ALL HUMANS, no matter if they are against and for shaper. and if the shaper fall, all other human would fallen prey to these savages. i'm all of equality, but in the end, i side by my species, and if siding with rebel contribute to human's extinction, i'd choose shaper dictatorship anyway.

anyway, this much constrasting opinion on this matter prove how much thought and effort mr. vogel thought into creating this world. plus G4 pretty much show and tell how they started treating the creation differently. they have laws that prohibit mistreating creation, but failed to enforce them. it will be a slow change, but 300 years ago they literally pit creations for kicks and entertainment. it may took centuries, but it's now banned worldwide.

  10. well for instance people said it's too linear, mission based instead of free roam or open world like avernum/geneforge. but i praise jeff for trying new things.

the story is good, and the setting is quite enjoyable, party members interaction is deeper than avernum / geneforge, and i can see jeff wants to emulate bioware-lite party interaction where they have their own story/sub quest etc, and he do it quite well. non playable characters are quite memorable too, especially the villains. the gameplay is quite original on its own, and i feel all vogel's games have quite distinct character system and combat, but i acknowledge it quite suffer from too much trashmobs/etc but that's already a staple there.

well it maybe isn't better than generforge, as i feel the G is still jeff's masterpiece until now, but avadon, in its own right is still great series with 2 great games, and doesn't deserve the hate it gets especially from older fans *cough RPGcodexers cough cough*.
