Do the switches hidden in the plant pots at the center of Gheth do anything?

I've talked with the mayor, Bruce, and Leith. I've read Leith's books. Can't find furnace with the ashes I need though. Eddy's furnace doesn't have it. Bruce's does, but it says I have "no good reason to poke around in them." Can't get to the furnace behind Patsy. Did I mess up somehow?
