Has anyone actually beaten the game using sluggish?

The oldest version of Exile I can find is v1.1.1. for windows. Here. Mac users can see if this works.

You use the 'enter-end combat jump' tactic to get over the rune. The summoned creatures are there to stop you bouncing back towards Erika. You can also use this tactic to safely rob Shayder, (by jumping over the alarm).

Actually, it's not that difficult getting inside. Getting back out is a bit harder, though.

I think you could only open the chest after you recover the stone (as a reward). If I recall, the box contains Boots of Speed.

You can, however, get inside in Avernum 3. Unlock doors lvl 3 opens the doors. Then summon some monsters (to stop you bouncing backwards) and using the enter/end combat cheat to jump the rune. (This can take a long time to get it right). But no, there's nothing inside the two rooms.

There is a crystal NE of Fort Dranlon (you need to go by boat to get it). And your party also gets +2 to Strength when you repair the crystal cave.

I had the same problem (windows version).I think it happens when you have too many creations with you.
