Ummm, why would I need to? You can't even get to the Great Portal until you've started working for Levitt. As far as I know, Meryhew has nothing to do with the quest for retrieving the Great Portal library notes.

I am experiencing this problem as well; I have the quest, but the gate before the barriers remains closed. Steam version. Has nobody else had this happen to them, because I can't find anything about it other than this thread. Could it be an out-of-order bug (because I also killed the monsters before realising I didn't have the associated quest)?

Regardless of the cause, is there any hackish way of fixing it? Because I forgot the rule about multiple saves in RPGs, alas, so have no earlier save to go back to.
