Tenderfoot Thahd (2/17)

  1. I agree whoever said the music is already right where it needs to be. If I need to, I can always pull out my phone and hit up Pandora. The ambient background noise is very good for immersion because I don't hear music everywhere I go. It doesn't change when turn down a dark alley and could get jumped by thugs, and doesn't change when I come in or go outside. Next you have theme... what kind of music would really work for Avernum or Avadon? I think adding background music would cripple the games.
  2. One major difference between the two, is that while combat in both is turned based... movement in Avadon is real time, while movement in Avernum is turn based. Avadon has a lot deeper character interaction. While you move through a linear plot: you can move through it in a non-linear way. Who you choose, and what you choose, will make things different.
  3. You feel bad about slaughtering wretches?? Do you also fear for the ants you trample under your feet!?
  4. Hello. I made a character named Fulton who is a shadow walker. I don't fully know what to expect, but I am going to try my hardest to role-play through this game. So far, I am not disappiointed, but I'm not that far. Think of this as a kind of diary for my character, so I will not be labeling the spoilers. I clearly marked the title of the thread, and I sincerely hope that, and this, is warning enough. I have been careful not to read other threads for the possible spoilers, so I can go through this fresh without a bias effecting my decisions. So far, his favorite weapon is the Ninjy Star. He prefers lighter armor, the chainmails, and two handed weapons. He is not very subtle with his combat technique, and seeks to dispatch his foes as quickly as possible. So, my first choice was between Sevilin and Nathalie. I chose Nathalie to help me clean out the dungeons, and I was very satisfied with both her enthusiasm and her abilities. However, I understand now why she has been passed up and overlooked. She is very impatient. I do not hold this against her, as I remember what it was like to be young once. When we left the dungeon I was satisfied with my choice, and glad I took the time to gauge her skill and mindset. My next mission, into the Kva, I chose to take Sevilin and Jenel. Sevilin because he was from the Kva, and I felt it would be a huge advantage to bring a Hand with the home-field-advantage, so to speak. It was, I took Jenel to study her behavior in a land the opposite of her upbringing. While there was some back and fourth between Jenel and Sevilin, he stood his ground, and she knew her own limitations. I felt they worked well together as a group. When I encountered The Wayfarer, I asked for his name. When he refused to give it, i shut down all communication. I will not contract with anyone that may be contrary to Avadon, and since he could not be honest with even his name, I refused to deal with him. Nothing he could offer is worth the integrity of being a Hand of Avadon! For the excursion into the Khamira, I chose to take Shima and Jenel. It was a mission of secrecy and stealth, and I felt now was a good opportunity to study a fellow Shadow Walker. Shima did not disappoint, although I can't help but wonder about his motives for so openly divulging his life story, I was impressed more by his discretion. This was also another chance for me to examine Jenel's behavior, this time in the land of her enemies. I can't help but agree with her about the Farlanders, and I am glad she did nothing to upset the mission for her own personal reasons. She is showing a lot of character in being able to control herself while surrounded by enemies. I know that there is more to the wizard, and his arrival to kill the shadowbeast was his attempt to destroy evidence of his own misdeeds... however I lacked proof of his transgressions, and turned all information over to Heart Miranda. Perhaps she will examine the data and give me orders to cut his black heart out. Until I am given orders, I cannot act on my own tuition. Let the Farlanders suffer his existence for they deserve no less. I met the Wayfarer again, and once again chose not to divulge any information to him, nor agree to any of his terms. I suspect my comrades may report on me to Heart Miranda as I report on them, and I will not work with anyone who may be an enemy of the Pact. My next mission will take me to the Kva once again. I believe I will take Sevilin with me again, to fight for his homeland and perhaps come to terms with the Dragons. I will also be taking Nathalie along, to give her a chance to see the Dragon and understand that there is always something bigger, and wiser, than yourself. I suspect she is also prepared to dish out some pain to our foes, and will not balk at the chance to show off her talents.. I do not fancy the smell of burning ogre, but they are much more agreeable when they are dead. Until next time.... Hand Fulton.
  5. They need to work out another combination because now that everyone knows about ctrl-alt-delete, it's a lot harder to trick people into pushing those keys.

    My Journey

Hello. Let me tell you a tale of utter failure and despair. First off, let me explain that though I am new to these forums, I am not new to Exile, or perhaps the modern rendering, Avernum. I have loved these games since the 90's, and spent many hours plumbing the deepest and darkest depths of the Pit. However, some years ago I forgot all about these games... Until the Steam sale. That reawakened the flames of Exile and I found myself once again scouring the Pit, killing demons, ogres, and bandits. After completing Avernum: Escape from the Pit, my thoughts went back to the older games. I've attempted Avernum 2, and while it's enjoyable and much more solid... I missed the older incarnation. So, I set fourth to 'make it work!'. I have come to hate Windows 7. Intensely. My first attempt to install the old games was short. Windows Compatibility never works for me, so I was unsurprised when it failed me this time. As i learned often in mechanics, the first and simplest solution is most likely wrong. It's never as easy as it should be. But I soldiered on. My second attempt was installing a virtual machine. However, this failed. It turns out, you need to actually have a copy of the windows you want to install for it to work. Now, without being specific as to how I obtained it, I got a copy of Windows 3.1. I got the virtual machine to launch it... However, I was unable to ascertain how to actually put the Exile file into the virtual drive. After many-many hours of frustrated reading and watching, I scrapped this plan. Set a torch to my virtual drive and never looked back, except to curse it. Then I learned that you can install Windows 3.1 using Dosbox. I figured out how to do so, and Windows 3.1 worked flawlessly! I managed to install Exile 2 and start it!! but there was just one problem.... Exile 2 doesn't look very good in 16 bit graphics. Not in the least. So my task was then to get Windows 3.1 to run in 256 color mode. As it turns out, none of the native video drivers that have 256 colors for windows 3.1 are supported on Dosbox. I would need to find a driver for one of the ancient relic video cards that Dosbox is compatible with. The only driver links I was able to locate where broken. It seems that my desire to play the old Exile games will simply have to be fulfilled with Avernum. I believe I may have already wasted enough time typing this, as the Nephilim near Fort Ganrick grow passing bold. However, I feel I must share my history of this experience before I sally fourth and perhaps ride to my doom at the Nephilim Fort. I can only hope my next fore into the Pit is more successful than my attempts to get Exile to work. To taste defeat when Victory was so close is bitter. Avernum 2 is my last hope of victory over the Empire!
