The most common change was to remove navels and nipples, which the generator would almost always produce. I believe these are not compatible with slith biology, being reptilian rather than mammalian, and art from the Avernum games would seem to bear this out.

The descriptions of slith lairs definitely seem to reinforce a reptilian not mammalian cycle.  An argument could be made for some fish aspects but I think that something along the lines of turtles would be closest breeding wise, definitely not any biological reason for nipples or navels.  It does make sense that a AI with a lot of furry art is going to have a mammalian bias.

  2. What is not really clear from what we see is how many staff Avadon actually has.  In Avadon 1, if I recall correctly, there is only enough space for half a dozen hands and three or so Hearts.  The quality of the hands seems really poor (common RPG problem where the PC is the best option there is) with the brand new recruit/draftee being the only one who can do anything, which seems to be part of the problem with assigning completely wrong personalities to the missons

  3. Compensation seems to be another issue.  A big part of a hand's compensation package seems to be what they can extort from various people, often ones who are in great need.  If the Hands were being well compensated and held accountable then bribery would be at least a lot more expensive.

Master/servant makes sense in that before the adventure, Bilbo and later Frodo employ Sam as gardener for their property, Bag's End. It's a British class distinction with Merry and Pippin also being ones that are considered owner class and not ones that work. That they all treat each other as friends still has Sam considered as the worker through out the journey.

Arguably Sam is the only character that we spend much time with from the lower class.  The rest of the companions are all some kind of nobility/upper class (Gimli, Legolas, Boromir, Aragon, etc).  Sam's characterization is probably not all that far from the reality of the England of Tolkien's youth.

  5. In addition to the shareware CDs, there was also some coverage in hard copy computer magazines that focused on the Mac market.  That is another mechanism that essentially does not exist any more.  Not just because hard copy magazines are going away, but also because there are so many more games on the market that covering a small indy game is unlikely.

  6. I like Avernum 2 the best as well.  Story wise I like 1 and 2 equally well, but 2 seems so much bigger to me even though it is only slightly bigger.  It also just seems better developed, but that is probably because it was the second game developed (going back to the original version).

Jhereth Deeps - locations of Blue Ore are marked

The link with the image of the pillar does appear to be broken to me.  However, a few items above there is the link to the map that Jerakeen made of Jhereth Deeps that has all of the blue ore locations marked which should help anyone who is having difficulty with this quest.  Jerakeen has not been on here in several years so I doubt we are going to see a fix to that link.

  8. I believe that the option of killing Redbeard in the first two games was put in by Jeff just for the sake of giving the players options.  From what I remember, his death is non-canonical and so all of that pain serves no purpose.  I had read enough of that here at the time that I did not kill him on my first play through and found the game much more enjoyable that way.

  9. Ladyonthemoon, as I stated earlier in this thread, I grew up playing games well before automap.  I like automap.  If your opinion of my work ethic is based on my approach to playing computer games, I think that you may want to question your judgement.  I play computer games for fun.  I have plenty of time at work each day to do calculations, research products and techniques and do other difficult things, so I read for fun and I play computer games for fun.  If you believe that the only way to play computer games is to make maps with pencil and paper and have perma-death, then that is what you must enjoy.  I don't.
