Garrulous Glaahk MissSea
I know this is posted to Strategy Central for Avernum 4, but the link says there's an Internal Error. Could someone sum up for me (in 200 words or less) how it works 'cause I've been giving my priest Tool Use, but his Priest Skill is still low ... I can't open my 25 doors ... Thanks, MissSea
Magnificent Ornk Dikiyoba
You want to put tool use on your mage (not priest!). This is because tool use makes the unlock spell more effective. Dikiyoba.
Curious Artila diipadaapaa
I think the unlock door spell is a mage spell, not priest. When trying to unlock a door with that spell, your spell strength (spellcraft, magery, magic spells skill and spell level increase spell strength) is added to your tool use and its checked if the number is high enough to open the door. Ineffable Wingbolt Erebus the Black
There's a manual pdf given/installed with the game download (check in the avernum folder) which lists the exact formula to calculate the effectiveness of the unlock doors spell. (If only I have checked it before starting my game)
Hatchling Cockatrice Alorael at Large
You can make a reasonably good trap disarmer and door opener who isn't a mage. You can open a few more doors bit earlier if the disarmer is a mage. It's not something that will fundamentally change the game. —Alorael, who has played through A4 with a fighter-thief more often than with a mage-thief. It hasn't wrecked his fun yet. Garrulous Glaahk MissSea
Thanks, folks -- I made that mistake about the mage/priest thing. I've been so busy building my mage's ... well ... mage levels, so I figured I'd use my priest for the Tool Use bit. Oops. I checked out Schrodinger's guide, too ... it seems the door I want to get past is filled with bum stuff anyway (Ft. Dranlon), so I'm going to not stress so much. @Zuljin: I bought A4 from Big Fish -- no PDF file found. But I'll check out Strategy Central for more info! Garrulous Glaahk MissSea
Okay, so I thought I was out of the woods with the Unlock Door thing, but I'm still running into issues. I've defeated the drake guarding Athlon's lair, and I can't open the door (level 28 needed). I'm going nuts here without having the formula to calculate how far I'm away from the required tool use/unlock door spell strength. Could anyone please post the formula? FYI, the link in Strategy Central regarding this matter is kaput. Also, as mentioned earlier, I bought A4 from Big Fish -- no handy PDF with hints/tricks/tips. Thanks! Hatchling Cockatrice Lilith
Basically the formula is: Unlock Strength = Tool Use + 2/3 of Unlock Doors spell strength The Unlock Doors spell strength is equal to the spell level, plus your Mage Spells skill, plus your Spellcraft skill. If you really pump Tool Use and Spellcraft on your mage, it's possible to unlock doors with a difficulty of 40 by the end of the game. There's never a point where it's actually necessary to unlock a difficult door to proceed, though.
Hatchling Cockatrice Randomizer
Go back to the nearby mage and he can give you a key to unlock that door.
Garrulous Glaahk MissSea
Thank you, thank you! I'll forever praise the names of Thuryl and Randomizer. MissSea FYI, Randomizer -- that's a negatory on the S-Man offering up a key. Maybe it's a different mage ... also, why the need for a magic barrier as well as the drake? Hatchling Cockatrice Randomizer
I remember once being offered a key by the mage near Athron's lair, but I think you have to report back that the drake guarding the door is dead. My first game I used the unlock spell and usually go that way.
Understated Ur-Drakon Earth
Honeycomb (H3) If coming from H2, go up the nearby stairs. Kill the three spraying bushes, and you'll find Sleater. He'll give you the ability to destroy the undead if you ask. Come back after you've done it, and he wants your help to explore Athron's old lair. Garrulous Glaahk MissSea
Thanks for that, Earth Empires! @Randomizer: Your information was correct -- sorry about the mix-up!
