Return of the Desktop Thread

Recommended Posts

It's been a while since we've had a desktop thread. So, take a photo and show off your desktops/wallpapers/collection of icons scattered across the ether. Bonus points for pictures of the tops of your desks, too.

(Also, to avoid stretching the board, please post your images as links or in spoiler tags. Thanks!)

I'll start:

- This is the corner of my room where my computer lives.

- This is a closer view of my desk. It's not usually this tidy.

- This is my wallpaper and icon layout.

The desk where my personal computer is setup is extremely cluttered and boring, so here is a picture of my work desk.

What do I have to do to also get all of the monitors?

My desktop PC (not visible in this picture, as it is sitting on the floor) has two video cards in it. There are some newer cards that will drive 4 monitors on their own.

Displaying my current desktop is a violation of federal law. Alternately a pretty but very blank default background.

—Alorael, who would put in the effort to make it legal, but then it would also be cleaned-up and boring, which nobody wants.

what unloved lunatic decided to apply skyrim's chunky, misanthropic rat king of a ui to anything else, and what did they threaten you with to make you install it.

you got wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too much stuff on your desktop, I have only 17 program links and 4 Win 7s objects and ~30 files or folders.

Different people use their computers in different ways. While he may have more things on his desktop than you have on yours, saying he has "too much stuff" seems to imply there is something wrong with the way he does things. If it works for him, than it isn't too much.

Says you. My desktop is a jumble of 70 icons, many of which are overlapping. Is it messy? Undoubtedly. Does it give me immediate access to all the stuff I need? Sure. Does it need cleaning? Probably, but it's not like the excess junk there causes any problems.

—Alorael, whose desktop catastrophe is a form of security. No one can find his important files in the clutter even if he accidentally leaves his screen unlocked. Yep.

Growing up with a shared family computer, my father kept the desktop clean of shortcuts and didn't allow us to put new ones on. Otherwise the computer would be slower.

(His reasoning behind this was at least somewhat understandable -- he assumed all shortcuts worked the way shortcuts in the Startup folder worked. But then, he hated it when we moved the mouse while the computer was booting or otherwise busy, because that would slow things down as well.)

It's still a bit claustrophobic

You think that's bad? This is with all the windows I normally have opened minimized. Normally I have AIM, YIM, Skype, mIRC, Steam friends, and Firefox open all at once. I don't even see my desktop that much!

That said, I can probably clear out some of the shortcuts to Steam games I have on there, I'm just lazy/forgetful.

For some reason (let's just blame it on my OCD), I keep my desktop clean.

Wallpaper: Bloodborne

Yeah and I open one program at a time, I keep my laptop in a good condition and uninstall programs regularly every month

If I don't have something to uninstall, I'll find myself some useless things in the net so I can feed my uninstall craving

No problems if you use non-Windows but if you use Windows then there is possibility for problems.

I'm actually curious. What's the possible problem, and what does it have to do with operating system?

Windows used to have a subtle way of bloating just about everything... it used to be an honest concern back in the days of oh, Win95, 16 and less MB RAM, 100mHz processors and the like.

By Windows 2000 I'd have to guess the only way to still have problems would be if you'd gone and used your desktop as an install directory or you had a bunch of videos rather than shortcuts to videos hanging out there, or some such. These days there is no plausible reason for desktop icon clutter or moving the mouse to cause system hangs; it would have to be a symptom of some other kind of problem.

That said it doesn't hurt to have things be a bit tidy. I'm partial to a program called Fences by Stardock - you can leave a ton of links on your desktop and still have them pretty well organized. But... the icons I keep on my desktop are more force of habit from being old, than actually needing them there. Unless you have something critical to keep your attention focused on, or for some reason you're afraid you're going to forget you have something installed, it's not really important to have things on the desktop. Even Windows makes it easy to pull up what you want, in a manner most dynamical.

I don't install things into program files. That way when I want to uninstall something, I can be sure I delete it entirely and quickly. The shortcuts are simply so I don't have to open the folder to run the game.

So I don't get called for criticizing without contributing:

Two question/comments:

1.) Is everyone on the internet a brony now or are you guys just being ironic?

2.) A heart turned on a winding wheel. . . has the best desktop and is clearly the funnest person to hang out with.

That dust-off ain't just for clearing vents!

These days I use Linux exclusively... not so much because I like it, as because there is no alternative.

(And I'm not letting you see my desk. There's so much stuff on it that the bottom layers of paper are starting to compost.)

I think it's OK for me to bump this thread, right? I know it's old but the content seems to be "timeless".

Here is my newly cleaned-up desktop environment!

That background is called, "Barn at the Grand Tetons". I don't remember where I found it, you can probably Google it. It's one of my favorites, and it's great because it allowed me to make the Bandit Busywork enlarged scenario icon: I recognized the mountains in Bandit Busywork's tiny little 32x32 icon in BoE as the mountains in this photo. I then sought and found a public domain photo of the same mountains and edited away!

On my right monitor (which looks bigger to me because I can't make the max resolution on my monitor stick for some reason) I have my panels, featuring assorted hardware temperature and activity monitors along the top, and my open applications just above my bottom panel, featuring lovely Linux Mint icons. I love the Mint-X theme with all its little rounded-square icons! Some of those are standard icons that actually belong to other programs I have no reason to actually use, but you can see my Blades of Exile icon (edited into Mint-X form from Erdos's original), and My Briefcase (where I keep things I want to sync with my other computer via my flash drive, or just stuff I want easy access to), inspired by the old Windows Briefcase software, although I actually use a program called Unison to synchronize it. The briefcase icon is edited from a public-domain SVG I found on Wikimedia Commons. Everything from the ladybug to the window to the night sky, when clicked, open a menu with five programs or files, for easy access.

I created the color scheme, inspired by the wallpaper. I like to make wallpaper/color scheme coordinated themes. I'm about to figure out where Linux Mint keeps the themes so I can copy them to My Briefcase.

I have never left the states on the East Coast, except to go to Vermont. I'm actually terrified of leaving New England due to the health care situation. The most frustrating part of that is it kind of limits who I can date... :(

Backgrounds is artwork from my favorite fighting game Killer Instinct.

Icons definitely need to be de-cluttered but has some nice tiny details. Fulgore(top right) is vaporizing my recycle bin, Spinal(top left) is trying to eat the skull icon.

I plan to stick with this one for a long time.

My old laptop had a StarCraft theme complete with window effects and sounds, but it wouldn't work after I updated to windows 7, then that laptop died and I lost the files; too lazy now to redo it.
