This does not appear to be the case in A2 (fixed at 12), is this an A3 feature? Also, for some reason my first creature was overwritten and then the second slot was skipped (and I believe the third slot may have been overwritten too, but I forget)... The slot is chosen randomly, which can be incredibly annoying if it overwrites something you especially like.
