Fledgling Fyora Blarg
I got the steam version Geneforge games during the holiday sale, and started playing them a few days ago. I'm 22 hours into Geneforge 1, and so far I'm pretty impressed. That said, my fun's been cut short. Whenever I try to launch Geneforge 1, 2, 3, or 4, I get a generic error message saying "A fantasy role-playing game for Windows. has stopped working". Geneforge 5 works, for some reason, but the rest crash on startup. I've never had this problem before, and I'm kind of baffled. I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. I've already tried restarting the computer, uninstalling/reinstalling Geneforge, uninstalling/reinstalling Steam, and deleting my Geneforge preferences file (dunno why I thought that would work). Also, something strange I noticed is that the game seems to be making two copies of the Spiderweb Software saved games folder. One contains my saved games, and the other is full of empty folders. If I delete the empty one, a new one appears when I launch the game again. I don't know if that's related.
Seasoned Roamer Dire Hobbit
Avernum 4,5 and Geneforge 1,2,3,4 are all not working since the last update of steam client. Everyone is having this problem (at least win 7 and vista users). Avadon, Avernum EOTP, Avernum 6 and Geneforge 5 are ok.
Fledgling Fyora Blarg
So, the only solution is to wait for Steam to update again? That's frustrating.
Understated Ur-Drakon Earth
atm yes or request registration code for Spidweb-versions from Jeff but that will take few days too.
Tenderfoot Thahd chrome242
Yeah. I'm in the same boat. ~10 hours into Geneforge, it's been sitting around sense the holiday sale (and man, I don't know why I waited to long to start playing it. I haven't been this into a game in a very long time), and I just started in on it a few days ago. I supose I'll wait for steam to fix it, but this is yet another step in my slow dispersion of business from them to the other download vendors. On the up side, looking to this site for tech help, I discovered that Spiderweb Games sells their products directly, and is also having a sale on Avernum 4-6 (which I would be a fool not to buy with all the fun I've been having already with Geneforge!), which I had been planing on buying though steam until this happened. Now I can get a great price on them, and make sure the best part of it goes to the people who I would like to see get it the most, the game developers! =)
Seasoned Roamer Dire Hobbit
Hopefully there'll be a steam fix soon. I don't want to waste Spiderweb time with key request
Fledgling Fyora Blarg
I think I'll give it a few days and see if the problem is fixed when steam updates again. THEN I'll ask for a key. Thanks for your advice, all.
Tenderfoot Thahd vvvvv
^^^Same, I will relax with avernum 1 remake until geneforge 1 is back. Missing it already though... has it all; it is hard to explain just how satisfying an old-school rpg can be after a host of endless hack-fest. I hate EA, and now Square too, square sold-out. Indies are my only solace.
Well-Actually War Trall Spidweb
I have heard back from Steam. Nobody will be surprised to hear that this IS a problem related to the newest Steam update. They are working on fixing it. If they can't fix it soon, I have come up with versions of Avernum 4 and 5 and Geneforge 1-4 that work around the problem, and I will submit the patches on Monday if the issue isn't resolved by them. I may be able to come up with a workaround sooner, but I need to check in with Steam to see if it's workable for general users. We apologize sincerely for this problem. It WILL be fixed in the next few days. In the meantime, Geneforge 5 and Avernum 6 do work. Playing them instead of the game you want to play is a lousy solution, but at least it's something to do until them. - Jeff Vogel

Unflappable Drayk adc.
Oh yeah, I remember you. That's what bugs my mind everytime I see your name on who's online. Well, welcome back I think. -------------- You once posted a keygen then your link got erased. Well, yeah. Don't post it next time 'cuz I fear that Spidweb won't make anymore games from lack of money.
Understated Ur-Drakon Earth
SW doesn't have resources to make Geneforge or Avaernum or Avadon multiplayergame or even 2 player game and those would need longer testing etc.
