Tenderfoot Thahd Gleb Posted April 20, 2012 Share Posted April 20, 2012 Hello, I got Avernum: Escape from the pit from steam a few days ago, and everything was going well, but today it just doesn't launch - I click the launch button in the steam window, and a popup comes up saying "Preparing to launch Avernum: Escape from the Pit", and it then it blinks the word "starting..." for a fraction of a second in the game list, and then nothing happens. Everything was working fine yesterday. I vaguely remember it downloading some sort of an update for Avernum, I wonder if it's relevant? I'm using a Mac with Lion. Fledgling Fyora Zato-1 Posted April 20, 2012 Share Posted April 20, 2012 Yeah, I'm pretty sure you guys broke your game just now I'm using OSX Snow Leopard (v. 10.6.8), and I've had no technical problems with Avernum: Escape from the Pit so far. Then today in the morning (April 20), it just stopped launching. I tried launching it from Steam, but it didn't work; so I restarted Steam, tried again, still no go. Then I restarted my computer and tried again, and still didn't work. Then I tried to run the game from [username]/Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/common/avernum escape from the pit (where Steam stores the game on OS X), but I got the same deal: The Avernum: EftP icon bounces a bit on my dock, then the application just quits. Trying to load it this way, I even got a "Avernum quit unexpectedly" error message. Then I figured my installation might be corrupted, so I backed up my save files from [username]/Library/Application Support/Spiderweb Software/Avernum Saved Games, asked Steam to Delete Local Content, re-downloaded the game, and it still won't launch. I once again tried to restart Steam, launch the game manually, restart my computer and try again, but to no avail. Please fix this! Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Fledgling Fyora paul3720 Posted April 20, 2012 Share Posted April 20, 2012 I am having the same problem. I am playing the mac version on steam and it worked fine until this morning. Though the logs make me wonder if this is a steam issue... Fledgling Fyora dabble Posted April 20, 2012 Share Posted April 20, 2012 Yep, was playing last night on my macbook perfectly fine. Woke up this morning, clicked through steam, and it crashes before it launches Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Tenderfoot Thahd Mopizappuu Posted April 20, 2012 Share Posted April 20, 2012 This happened to me as well. I tried all the usual Steam fixes but nothing worked. Eventually I gave up, uninstalled Steam, deleted its folder in ~/Library/Application Support and started over. The game launches fine now. This is not a great fix - you will have to download all your games again - but it seems to work in a pinch. Edit - here's a link to the Steam page describing the uninstall on Mac, you just drag the app to the trash and trash the Steam folder in your local user's Application Support folder: Removing and Reinstalling Steam on a Mac Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Fledgling Fyora rjhoyle Posted April 20, 2012 Share Posted April 20, 2012 I haven't tried deleting the Steam folder yet, but I have the same problem, including a very similar log file. The problem also affects Avadon, but not other Steam titles. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Fledgling Fyora dabble Posted April 20, 2012 Share Posted April 20, 2012 It also said something about steamcloud not saving the files, so i will reinstall steam but move the saved folder somewhere safe Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Fledgling Fyora Zato-1 Posted April 20, 2012 Share Posted April 20, 2012 I uninstalled Steam, deleted its folder in Application Support, reinstalled Steam and Avernum: EftP, and it did NOT fix the problem for me. Still won't launch properly. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Tenderfoot Thahd Gleb Posted April 20, 2012 Author Share Posted April 20, 2012 I didn't reinstall Steam, but I tried installing (also from Steam) A:EftP on a different computer where I didn't have it before, and - no luck, doesn't launch. That computer runs Snow Leopard. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Fledgling Fyora ElPee Posted April 20, 2012 Share Posted April 20, 2012 I had the same problem when I tried to run A:EftP on Steam (Mac OSX 10.5.8) today. I deleted Steam in the Applications folder and in USER/library/Application Support, reinstalled it and it worked. The game launches again. Fledgling Fyora Zato-1 Posted April 20, 2012 Share Posted April 20, 2012 This is really frustrating... it is possible to get the game to work again, but the solution ain't pretty. Here goes. As Mopizappuu and ElPee said before me, the first step is to delete Steam from your Applications folder, then delete the Steam folder on [username]/Library/Application Support After that, download Steam again. Do not, I repeat, do NOT let Steam update from now on; I'll elaborate in a bit. Download Avernum again. Halfway through the download, I got this prompt: "Steam - Self Updater A Steam client update has been downloaded. Would you like to restart Steam now to apply the update?" Close that window. You may get another message soon after, which says: "Steam - Restart required Thank you for participating in the beta on Steam. The beta has now ended - please restart Steam to return to the current release." Hit Cancel. Now, you're free to play Avernum: EftP again. However, there's a catch. The game will only launch properly from Steam. From this point on, you cannot quit Steam. If you quit the Steam application, then the next time you launch it, it will automatically update at startup, and you won't be able to launch Avernum again. If that happens, you'll have to repeat this whole process. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Tenderfoot Thahd Gleb Posted April 20, 2012 Author Share Posted April 20, 2012 Wow. That's... pretty drastic. I really hope we get a fix. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Tenderfoot Thahd sarlok Posted April 20, 2012 Share Posted April 20, 2012 This same bug is affecting Avadon as well. Both games refuse to launch for me. I haven't tried the complete wipe and reinstall of everything Steam yet. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Tenderfoot Thahd sarlok Posted April 21, 2012 Share Posted April 21, 2012 Both Avadon and Avernum are working for me now on Steam. I didn't see a Steam update, but maybe there was an update for the games or something on Steam's servers. Hopefully they're working for everyone else as well. Tenderfoot Thahd Gleb Posted April 21, 2012 Author Share Posted April 21, 2012 Nope, not for me, so far... BTW, the message that flashes for a fraction of a second in the game list is not "Starting", as I thought, it's "Syncing". Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Tenderfoot Thahd Gleb Posted April 21, 2012 Author Share Posted April 21, 2012 Oh, hey, yeah, now it works! Woohoo! Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Fledgling Fyora Zato-1 Posted April 21, 2012 Share Posted April 21, 2012 Yeah, I can now quit Steam and the game still works. The issue seems to have been fixed. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Fledgling Fyora paul3720 Posted April 21, 2012 Share Posted April 21, 2012 Unfortunately it still isn't working for me. I'll try to play around with it some and see if i can coax it to launch... EDIT: Attempting to launch it directly doesn't work either: 4/21/12 12:36:32 PM com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[109] ([0x0-0x19019].com.spiderwebsoftware.Avernum[208]) Job appears to have crashed: Illegal instruction 4/21/12 12:36:33 PM ReportCrash[211] Saved crash report for Avernum[208] version 1.0.1 (1.0.1) to /Users/**********/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/Avernum_2012-04-21-123633_***************.crash Short version of crash log: Process: Avernum [208] Path: /Users/************/Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/common/avernum escape from the pit/Avernum.app/Contents/MacOS/Avernum Identifier: com.spiderwebsoftware.Avernum Version: 1.0.1 (1.0.1) Code Type: X86 (Native) Parent Process: launchd [109] Date/Time: 2012-04-21 12:36:23.677 -0400 OS Version: Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549) Report Version: 6 Thread 0 Crashed: Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread 0 com.spiderwebsoftware.Avernum 0x0000244e _GLOBAL__I_boat_start_locations + 0 1 dyld 0x8fe0d31a ImageLoader::recursiveInitialization(ImageLoader::LinkContext const&, unsigned int) + 246 2 dyld 0x8fe0d3cd ImageLoader::runInitializers(ImageLoader::LinkContext const&) + 61 3 dyld 0x8fe024a9 dyld::initializeMainExecutable() + 134 4 dyld 0x8fe0794e dyld::_main(macho_header const*, unsigned long, int, char const**, char const**, char const**) + 4189 5 dyld 0x8fe018b1 dyldbootstrap::start(macho_header const*, int, char const**, long) + 779 6 dyld 0x8fe01057 _dyld_start + 39 Thread 0 crashed with X86 Thread State (32-bit): eax: 0x00000002 ebx: 0x8fe0ec8c ecx: 0x8fe44840 edx: 0x8fe44840 edi: 0x0000244e esi: 0x00000000 ebp: 0xbfffd678 esp: 0xbfffd60c ss: 0x0000001f efl: 0x00010246 eip: 0x0000244e cs: 0x00000017 ds: 0x0000001f es: 0x0000001f fs: 0x00000000 gs: 0x00000037 cr2: 0x0000244e Exception Type: EXC_BAD_INSTRUCTION (SIGILL) Exception Codes: 0x0000000000000001, 0x0000000000000000 Crashed Thread: 0 Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
