Articulate Vlish Malical
I just finished getting bored with Avernum 4 and this is the next stone in the skip. The first time I played A4, I messed it up. A lot. So then this awesome person had on the forums a build (custom x4) that detailed ever initial skill point for a basic build. I understand that for most of you that takes away from the fun, but I don't like the beginning or end of these games. I like the middle, I like the exploration, and the running around. So while this game is new, I was just wondering if someone could give me a basic build that actually works? I only ask this because I was lurking around the forums and only found one build that was mentioned and it was for torment (I start out at normal, get annoyed part way through, and switch to easy:). Basically, can someone just help me out? I'm confused.
Hatchling Cockatrice Slawbug
Simple, no hassle build that should keep you having fun on Normal: CHARACTERS 1 and 2 ALL stat points into STRENGTH 3 Melee Weapons 2 Hardiness (increase Melee Weapons and Hardiness in the future) CHARACTER 3 ALL stat points into INTELLIGENCE 3 Priest Spells 2 Arcane Lore, Tool Use, or Cave Lore (increase Priest Spells every level in the future, and other lore skills) CHARACTER 4 Just like character 3 except substitute Mage Spells for Priest Spells
Hatchling Cockatrice Randomizer
Character 1 and 2 All stat points into strength 3 Melee weapons 1 Hardiness 1 Priest (increase Melee Weapons, Hardiness and Parry alternating until both are 10) Character 3 All stat points into intelligence 3 Mage spells 2 Priest spells (increase Mage spells, Spellcraft and Resistance alternating until both are 10) Character 4 All stat points into intelligence 3 Priest spells 2 Tool Use (TU) (increase Priest spells, rotate between increasing Spellcraft, Resistance, Tool Use, Cave Lore, and Arcane Lore) Raise Endurance every 3rd or 4th level. Mage and Priest spells don't need to be more than 17. You don't need more than Tool Use (TU) 12, Cave Lore (CL) 8, and Arcane Lore 12 within the party. Items and quests will give you more. Interesting to me that neither you nor House of S like a ranged weapon specialist. The frequency of Spine Shield use by opponents always makes me want ranged attacks. Hatchling Cockatrice Slawbug
We have ranged weapon specialists... they're called spellcasters Seriously, while bows are certainly useable in AEFTP, they simply do less damage than melee attacks and spells, and there's no compelling reason to have an archer instead of another mage, or whatnot. Garrulous Glaahk Blaspheme
So your fighters characters don't get Blademaster or do they get it after let's say, chapter one ?
Ineffable Wingbolt Superba
I like to have an Archer with Nimble fingers and Priest spells, Blademaster, Pole weapons master and the Mage. It worked very well in Avernum 6 and it works now.
Hatchling Cockatrice Slawbug
Blademaster is good later in the game. It is significantly less efficient than plain Melee Weapons early on.
Curious Artila Decho
For me go with melee tank , melee pole(damage dealer), mage, healer and support
Hatchling Cockatrice Randomizer
Quick Action is a bit more useable than Blademaster since as Slarty pointed out you get better fatigue recovery and it lets you get Dual Wielding after maxing out hardiness and Parry. @Kreador - I started out with Priest instead of Parry so all your characters can heal and cure. I've had enough tanks with their heavy, bulky armor unable to reasonably hit boss monsters, but they can do decent healing and not waste the turn,
Articulate Vlish Malical
I can't thank either of you two enough. I would have had something completely different (and most likely to fail) but now I might actually get some fun out of the 100+ hours I'll put into this. Thanks again. That will make Tool, Cave Lore and Arcane Lore raise a lot too slowly, and those three skills can be spread through the party so no reason to build a weaker character just to save few skill points. For one character like a tank or a more focused character perhaps not spend any point in those skills but spread them into three characters, also to raise them faster. In fact you need them quite fast in the game.
