Correct. You can only train a spell up to level 2. Reading a spell book will take that spell to level three if you already have it at 2. (Low level spell books excluded.)

I don't think it will take you to 3 if you only have it at 0 or 1 to begin with. I say that because I only got to level 1 of unshackle mind by reading the spell tome and never went to a trainer for the spell before or after that. (Level 1 is all you need of that spell.)

That's right. If you just read a spell book it shows you only having level 1 in that spell. If you have level 1 and read it, then you have 2 levels.

You missed the nephil dude at the Freehold, who trains some skills (sorry, forget which) at exorbitant to slightly expensive.

This sounds like A4 all over again.

*Pulls hair out in frustration*

Would it have been so hard to put the tome in a different variable so it wouldn't affect the trainer? Or maybe it's intentional, but if so, each (or some of) trainer should be able to give a small perk according to who you trained under (reduced casting cost from one, longer duration from another, larger casting range/radius from a third just for example)

The tome IS in a different variable so it doesn't affect the trainer.

The deal is that you can get 3 levels of each spell: 2 from purchases, and 1 from a tome. All three are stored separately so the order you get them does not matter.

The only exception is the "lower level spells" tome that gives you the 2 purchased points for several spells, but none of the tome points for them.

This is different from the original trilogy where you needed to buy one level of the spell before you could read most spell books, but then the spell book raised you to level 3 without the need to buy level 2.

Okay, let me see if I understand this: there are three levels to all spells. One level comes from tomes. Two levels come trainers. To get the third level of any spell, I need all three, and it doesn't matter in what order or from what source I acquire them. Correct?

Oh thank god *relieved*

A few notes for the list:

Erik Threescars is "Expensive."

Starcap is "Expensive."

Carol teaches spells for "Pretty Average."

How many times can you train each ability per character (umm, two, right?), and which abilities can't be trained above ten (or their respective max level) if you use a trainer before investing all skill points you can in it?

Twice.

Trainers ignore caps. Almost all skills are capped, otherwise, at 10. The exceptions are:

- Luck is capped at 5, and has no trainer anyway.

- The 6 "basic" skills (Melee Weapons, Pole Weapons, Bows, Thrown Weapons, Mage Spells, and Priest Spells) effectively have no cap.

Minor question, but
Click to reveal..
if you're at 5 when you get to the pool in the Gremlin fort that gives everyone +1 luck, do you go to 6 or is 5 a hard cap?

You go to 6. To be more specific, the caps ONLY apply to you using your skill points. Trainers have their own cap of 2 that's tracked separately, and magical bonuses ignore all caps. It's only when you use skill points that how much you already have matters.

If you do enough for the Freehold of Kyass, both Hrror (ability) and Evyss (spells) will lower their prices to pretty average. Also, Evyss will start to teach the highest level spells (arcane mage spells and divine priest spells). I did all of the quests for Kyass (including giving him Drath's Tome), and I did the Pyrog quest for Evyss. I'm not sure how many of those were necessary to get the price down to pretty average, though. (I didn't check after doing every quest.)

Wow, I wish Randomizer had put that information into his List. I gave the tomes to Thantria for the gold, but if I'd known I could get the top Priest spells for "pretty average" then no way. Plus cheaper ability boosts. Should have known helping the Empire was a deceptive choice. Next time ...

I looked at my notes and never saw the cost get below expensive for helping Kyass. Maybe Jeff changed it in a later game version.

This is a tricky one. There are 6 quests you can do for the Freehold:

Senac

Lethem

Ashworth

Message to Bargha

Giant overseer

Pyrog's tome

The first 5 must be done in order with Kyass, the 6th is done for Evyss. Both Evyss and Hrror base their prices on these quests. For every TWO quests you complete, their prices go down a notch.

Hrror will train some skills at 2 quests, and more at 5 quests, but the price decreases are at 4 and 6.

Evyss will train some spells at 1 quest, more at 3 quests, and yet more with all 6 quests. The price decreases are still at 2, 4 and 6.

Thus, you do need to give them Pyrog's tome in order to get the best prices. And this is DEFINITELY the best reward for Pyrog's spellbook, now that Thantria's quest chain has been fixed (already done in v1.1 for Mac, apparently). Her reward is the equivalent of 1750 gold. I estimate the savings on spells you get from Evyss at around 4000 gold per party, if you stick to just the best spells. (It will be higher in the Double Priced, Mac version!) And savings from Hrror can EASILY reach a similar level.

(Note that the Chaotic Halberd *IS* the best pole weapon in the game, however, outside of the remix. It's still worse than dual blades, though.)

EDIT: I checked; it's always been this way. However, since the price only changes every 2 quests, you could have tested giving the book and not noticed the price difference. (It does either lower price, open new training options, or both for every quest number, however...)

EDIT 2: There is one downside. The first 4 quests can be completed pretty early on. Pyrog you might want/need to wait longer on. So you might need to delay buying some amazing spells, like Fireblast, to get the cheapest prices.

I'm locking this thread, but (as if quoting the admin wasn't enough) anyone else reading this should check the code of conduct, too:

Advocating cracks is not okay either, and will result in bans. Use your common sense, please!
