Thank you, and while you are at it, the annotated A2s would like an update, too. smile

There's something else though not related to the Annotated Maps: Schrodinger's walkthrough for Avernum 2 at Game FAQs.
Here's the link
Walkthrough Avernum 2
Maybe you'd like to link to it from the header? There's not much help for A2 up there anyway.

Looks like you've got more time on your hands than you think. tongue

Looks good so far.

"I've started the A2 maps - In an afternoon I've mapped 4 of the 6 towns in the starting outdoors zone, but I need to figure out how to split them into 2 groups in a way that makes sense before uploading them."

Why do you need to split them into two groups anyway? You could make the split friendly v hostile town.

Fort Draco map, you could color in the missing bits near the dock. Open the screen capture in Paint or whatever, copy and paste some water terrain from elsewhere on the left margin.

I was easily able to map the entire town. Left town boundary here is x = 3, so hop in a boat and go up and down the left boundary. You probably won't need to use Far Sight.

My A2 Template shows all maps, and all town boundaries:

Edit:

Comparing the A2 Template with the A2 automap is hard when you look at the left side of the screen. Unless you have a huge monitor screen you won't be able to see them both at the same time. You have to move the Editor from one side of the automap to the other. I have made a resizable version of the Editor, this makes it quite easy.

This starting zone is crowded.

I like your idea of doing the detailed maps in Silver's style. And I agree with you: you either come up with a project of your own that would of course look totally different, or finish this one in a combined effort, so to speak, while preserving its identity.

I don't get what you have in mind by splitting the six towns into two groups. What is it you want to achieve?

Basically it's a matter of aesthetics. With the outdoors map, and the 6 towns, the page is either going to look really crowded, or else will be tremendously long. This probably isn't terrible, but I was attempting to make them a uniform size like Silver.

No matter - with school it's going to be a while before I finish even the demo area, so I shall figure something out, I'm sure.

You'll find your own solution. The easiest way out I see right now is cutting up the starting area .jpg into sections, 2 or 4, as many as needed, and make each section clickable. (Starting_area_1.html, Starting_area_2.html, etc)

New files uploaded, and again, tell me if something fouls up.
On the Avernum 1 main map the newbielande.html is missing, though it was there before you updated the page.

Huh. You know what though, it's actually in the folder, and it's being pointed at correctly. I didn't change anything at all, so I checked, and the html file just has this:

Code:
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//IETF//DTD HTML 2.0//EN"><html><head><title>404 Not Found</title></head><body><h1>Not Found</h1><p>The requested URL /~silver/Avernum/Wrappers1/NewbieLande.html was not found on this server.</p><hr><address>Apache/2.0.58 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.0.58 OpenSSL/0.9.7i PHP/5.1.2 mod_fastcgi/2.4.2 Server at www.silverchat.com Port 80</address></body></html>

Not to worry though - there is a file called NewbieLande-2 that has all the right information, so I've removed the other, and linked to the right item.

I've got another mirror up here, just in case the others go down.

It looks like maybe silver's site is going to be back eventually. If so, I'll remove the maps. I did just notice the front page says "You may link to this site, but may not redistribute any of the text or images in part without express written permission." I don't have express written permission, so, uh...

I'm not sure why you keep saying that. Between gathering the images, gathering all the data (quite an exhaustive amount, on Silver's maps, from many different sources), making it all look nice, and dealing with technical and practical issues, it's quite an extensive undertaking.

I can attest to this, despite only having the starting area finished. It's not an impossible amount of work, especially if you know the game well, but it's still a heck of a lot of work.

The key here is that while they're known as the annotated maps, the annotation is far more important and more time-consuming than the mapping.

—Alorael, who should probably say something about adjectives and nouns. Something witty. Something Slarty would appreciate on several levels. Oh well; not every signature can be a winner.

I'm also curious why you think this would be easy. There's a lot of work there, not to mention a lot of knowledge needed.

I don't actually plan on creating my own for Avernum, but I could see taking a crack at it for Avadon. I'm kind of curious if anyone knows how the images in Silver's maps were generated though. I'm assuming it was something more elegant than moving around the map and cut & pasting a ton of screenshots together. Or maybe you can just use image files from the game install? I haven't actually poked around.

I got a head's up from Derek about Silver's site being down.

I have a copy of Silver's website, with a complete, annotated version of Avernum 2. While he is getting settled into his new server, I will temporarily mirror his site at http://hasenjs.byethost33.com/. If you are out there Silver and you want me to take it down, let me know at hasen@flash.net, and I will happily comply. I tried to contact you once to give you my work on the Avernum 2 pages many months ago, but I never got a reply.

By the way, I also have completed, for myself, Rache's Avernum 3 pages. I don't know if I should post these either. I would appreciate feedback on these since the original authors don't seem to care about completing their work.

I just tried to contact Rache again re. his Avernum 3 pages, and got an undeliverable email back. He has not touched his website since April 2003, 8 years ago. Silver's site is even older and was last touched September 2001, 10 years ago.

I hate to use material created by someone else, but I also hate to see incomplete material or the loss of such good work that can still be of value to other people.

I would seriously like to get some feedback on this. I have scraped many websites because I feared they would be lost, and indeed, many are no longer to be found on the internet. They still exist in my private library, but they do no good to the rest of the internet community.

I'm impressed. Rache is a she, not a he, and I'd like to think that she would be happy to have her work carried on in her absence.

—Alorael, who is glad to see annotation carried on. It's especially nice to have it for the later games, in some form. There will be many happy Spidwebbers!

Harehunter, you are very welcome to the tabbed version of Rache's site that is still being hosted by a friend of mine. Thank you for taking the time to complete it, a task I never finished. After some server changes I'm in need of a new username and password myself to access the account, but that's no big deal. As soon as I have both I'll happily transfer the original package to you, if you want it.

This is a bit off topic, but what is the trick to setting my avatar? I go to the profile page, click the radio button for the URL, put in the url, and click submit. I check my profile then and sure enough my avatar is there. Then I come back later and it is gone! Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, over.

This is a completed version of the Avernum 2 maps. Silver has not touched his since 2001. Re-hosted here until Silver gets settled into his new server, or tells me to take it off.
Should I assume this is an error? tongue
