Curious Artila The Lost Anvil Posted May 21, 2009 Share Posted May 21, 2009 Hey, I am still suffering a rather laggy game experience whilst playing Geneforge 5 and am wondering if it is possible to increase the memory allocation to Geneforge 5, if so how can i do this? Understated Ur-Drakon Celtic Minstrel Posted May 21, 2009 Share Posted May 21, 2009 On Macs, the memory allocation is handled automatically. In other words, you can't. On Windows, I'm not sure, but I suspect it's much the same. If it's lagging due to a lack of memory, though (and I suppose there could be other reasons it's lagging) then it probably means that your computer simply doesn't have enough to allocate more for the game... though, with modern computers this seems unlikely... I have half a gigabyte of ram and a 2.8GHz processor as well. This is really bugging me because I have been looking forward to this game for a long time. Understated Ur-Drakon Celtic Minstrel Posted May 21, 2009 Share Posted May 21, 2009 Yeah, I didn't think that was likely. I know Windows often has a lot of background processes running. You could try killing some of them. Or you could restart in safe mode and see if it still lags. I'm not sure what that does, but it may reduce the number of background processes. Understated Ur-Drakon Tyranicus Posted May 21, 2009 Share Posted May 21, 2009 What version of Windows are you using? If you have Vista, 512MB of RAM is hardly enough. In other words, you don't have a real GPU. That's your problem. Turning on some of the fast graphics options will probably help, but beyond that you may just have to deal with some lag. I find this annoying because I can play more graphically demanding games without any problems. I think memory is the problem here as opposed to graphics. You could try closing all programs you don't need open and try the game then. I know on my previous XP computer, whenever I ran Firefox it would sometimes run at 100% CPU Usage, which would make the computer very slow. Understated Ur-Drakon Tyranicus Posted May 22, 2009 Share Posted May 22, 2009 Well, you could try upgrading your memory to 1GB. RAM is really cheap these days. However, I'm still pretty sure that your problem lies with the graphics. The more graphically demanding games that you've run on this system probably used DirectX. Geneforge 5 uses OpenGL which, in general, doesn't work well in Windows. Also, the Intel Extreme Graphics 2 chip is 4 years old at least. Unflappable Drayk Toby-Linn Posted May 22, 2009 Share Posted May 22, 2009 I had an Intel Celeron chip and 1 GB of RAM and I was able to play Geneforge 5 on my XP computer. Oh, but I also had a Nvidia GeForce 6600 Graphics card, so that probably helped it work. Maybe upgrade your graphics card as well. I did it myself and it was super easy. Understated Ur-Drakon Earth Posted May 22, 2009 Share Posted May 22, 2009 upgrade memory to at least 1GB (1.5 or even 2 wouldn't hurt) and depending if you have agp-slot or pci-e slot(s) on your motherboard buying decent/good graphics card. if your mobo doesn't have agp or pci-e-slot then you are out of luck. Go to your task manager (right-click on the start menu and select it), then go to the 'processes' tab. Find the GF5 process, right-click it, and change the priority to 'High' or 'Realtime'.
