  1. Possible small bug? In Avadon 3, I enter the portal to Avadon in Fort Foresight and go to Avadon. When I return, I get returned to Zethron's Keep. This behavior seems consistent. Possible reason: while Redbeard was in camp in the Fort Foresight area, but before he was allowed to enter the fort itself, I went to Zethron's Keep, used the portal to Avadon there, and was returned to Zethron's Keep. Perhaps "something" is "remembering"
  2. I may have uncovered a bug related to the junk bag. I opted to "sell everything in bag" and ended up with 0 coins and nothing in the bag. The autosave idea is validated once again - the "adventurer save frequently" dictum never occurs to me in a shop. The junk bag was quite full, so I thought perhaps there were too many items in it. I emptied out a character's inventory and started moving 35 items from junk bag to inventory and successfuly selling those. I did this a total of 3 times (105 items) and then tried "sell everything in the junk bag" again. This time it worked, but I discovered that the game appears to have a cap at 30K coins. The autosave idea is validated - oh, I already mentioned that. I noticed that the last "sell all" was worth 29K+ coins before I was capped at 30K. So, I have an alternate conjecture regarding the original 0 coins issue. Perhaps if the value in the junk bag is >30K, you end up with 0.
  3. I have successfully dealt with this issue ... by the cop-out of buying a new graphics board. I thought I would just add what I'd learned about the old board(actually onboard chip)/driver issue in case somebody else runs into the problem. My graphics chip is an Intel Q35. After going to the Intel site and upgrading the driver, as recommended in this thread, I ended up with driver version 8.15.10.1930, which failed the same way. I downloaded Avadon 2 when it came out and the failure remained. I believe that the difficulty is, as previously suggested in this thread, with "the driver". I offer the following disconnected bits of information: 1) the Intel site (at http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/CS-033757.htm?wapkw=opengl or thereabouts) said that drivers for the Q35 exist that don't support OpenGL. In particular "windows updates drivers are not expected to support OpenGL" It also says that the driver I downloaded is expected to support OpenGL 1.3, raising the possibility that the games require a newer version of OpenGL than that. 2) It appears that over the life of this chip, driver updates DID make a difference for some people under some circumstances According to http://www.lesliewong.us/blog/2009/01/26/windows-7-and-opengl/ July 22, 2009: Windows Update notified me that there was a updated Intel display driver for the 945 Express Chipset for Windows 7 RC. I installed it, version 8.15.10.1825, and it runs OpenGL on my flight sim program. It also works with these Intel chipset families: ... Intel® Q35 Express Chipset 3) There is a report of a situation very close to mine ufoai.org/forum/index.php/topic,6519.0/prev_next,prev.html? Black screen (Intel Q35 Graphic). « on: April 04, 2012, 08:26:59 am » Hi! I am trying v2.4 to get work in win7/x64 SP1. No luck, yet. GK is Intel Q35, drivers are latest from Intel. BUT with WinXP, on the same machine, it works perfectly! Whats wrong with w7/64? The most interesting thing about this is the possible corroboration that a driver DID formerly exist which allowed the hardware to "work". Of course, this could just be the OpenGL/no-OpenGL issue raised earlier. Thank you to those who took the time to work on my problem. I hope to enjoy the kinds of problems addressed in the OTHER forum topics for a while.
  4. Thank you for the DirectX version of Avadon. It, like the other DirectX versions, works fine. I did a brief investigation of issues regarding reinstallation of the driver. My lack of system experience with Windows, along w/my disillusionment regarding Windows backups ("just be sure you've saved all your personal files and things will be fine") leads me to postpone driver foolery until I have a much better backup system (ie, ability to restore things identically). This delay is partly motivated by the fact that the system is not mine and I cannot justify having work done on it because of my quest to make games run. Accordingly, to use the terms of my town government, I will put this issue in a state of "indefinte postponement", although unlike them, I DO intend to return to it. Thanks again for the assistance so far.
  5. Thanks for the idea. I'll look into it, probably some time next week.
  6. Thank you for the suggestion. I'm happy to report that this suggestion resulted in a workaround. After using "DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer" (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35), the "Avernum 6 DX.exe" program ran and displayed properly. So did the "Avernum DirectX.exe" version of "Escape from the Pit". I did not see a DirectX version of Avadon, but I haven't investigated that thoroughly. There seem to be a variety of similar-sounding downloads such as "DirectX 9.0c End-User Runtime" which presumably need to be avoided. The one I used seems to have added needed files without changing the "base" DirectX installation. After installation, the dxdiag.exe output appears the same. More telling, perhaps, is that "things worked" without a reboot. Running the A6-directX answered my earlier question about which renderer is being used. The opening screen says (approx) "Only use this if the OpenGL version doesn't work". This leaves me w/the original problem, now restated as "OpenGL worked on my Windows 7 box and now doesn't work". Since I have a game from another manufacturer that displayed the same symptoms described in this thread, I still have an issue, but not one for these forums. Once I find a DirectX version for Avadon, I'll leave you all in peace.
  7. Thanks for the idea. How does one tell which rendering is being used? I uninstalled A6 again, went to the Spiderweb site, downloaded and reinstalled the demo v 1.0.1 and reproduced the problem again. In this pass, I paid more attention to things like OpenGL/DirectX choices. I didn't encounter any. I found "Avernum 6 DX.exe" in the same folder as "Avernum 6.exe" and I tried to run it. It would not run because it wanted a file named d3dx9_32.dll and couldn't find it. If my guesses about file naming conventions are correct, this would be an out-of-date and "out-of-architecture" file which I wouldn't expect to find on my machine, but maybe I'm supposed to have one for compatibility issues ...
  8. 9. Thank you for your suggestion. As far as I can tell "everything is up to date". To be more specific, as far as I know, no video card has been "added" to this machine (or any of my old ones - as I said, Spiderweb Software programs just RAN!). I encountered a information that maintains that I have a "Generic PnP Monitor and Intel® Q35 Express Chipset Family" This display gives me a "Driver Provider: Intel Corporation" "Driver Date: 9/23/2009" and "Driver Version: 8.15.10.1930" If I choose the "Update Driver" button on that display and instruct the next screen to "Search automatically for updated driver software [including 'on the internet', wherever that means]", the result says "The best driver software for your device is already installed"
  10. Hello I hope someone can help me with my problem. One of the things I've liked best about Spiderweb Software games is that they always ran across various hardware/software configurations and now my luck seems to have run out. All games were purchased directly from Spiderweb Software. All games ran well under Windows XP on a Dell 32-bit machine. I received a new Dell 64 bit machine with Windows 7. I brought over my files with the Microsoft "Migration Wizard". Games again ran well, without any re-installation etc. The disk on this new machine died. I received a new disk with "Windows 7 on it". Since then, older games (A1->A5, for example) continue to run fine. However, A6, Avadon, and Escape from the Pit do not run fine. Each will start and blank the screen. I can hear the appropriate sound effects. I can move the mouse blindly and hear the sound effects I would hear if the mouse were over a link on the start page. I went to the Spiderweb Software site and brought down the A6 Demo. I installed it - no luck. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it - no luck. Any ideas? Thanks
