  1. Has to be considered value for money, works out as a couple of pennies per hour. Not that it was all that interesting at times (I'd take out the guards saying 'Zzz' and 'Yawn' tbh, it just reminded me that, yes, I was actually quite bored doing virtual quests for virtual people ). That last battle was a doozy to be sure, an' no mistake! Have to agree with other posters about not being able to go back and loot the palace, not sure what's gained by 'instakil' in the main hall, after all you can loot and pillage the rest of Avernum with impunity (I did so, reluctantly, before taking on the Emperor as I didn't have enough XP IMO - I really didn't want to slaughter Kyass as I believed in his ideals. It did get easier to commit genocide after him though: I felt like I was Eldritch of Melbourne (or wotever his name) from M. Moorcock's books - didn't he destroy the entire human race at one point for some petty infringement (only ever read the back covers of those books many years back LOL)? Have to wonder why poor merchants and stallholders would want to come to the aid of the soldiers: they're only 'one-hit wonders' and die in droves: women, children, even cows! Yes, the cows came to attack me with their wet snouts, though their righteous nuzzling availed them nothing. Would have liked to have seen them turn into steak on their instant demise ;-) The best thing about silencing the towns is just that: the silence. No more shouts of 'beebedank mordunk per neer' (or whatever it was) from that pesky kid . Also it was nice not to have to ask Bela to open that darn gate again. Cos I killed him. That'll learn ya Bela, u ignoramus, I told you I was important! Erika really is a gr8 mage: she turned up again to congratulate me for my wonderful work (despite me murdering her in her own tower previously). Those guarding King Micah need to be sacked too (yes, murdered him too, sorry)! Funnily enough, none of that resulted in any adverse effect on my Reputation. Didn't like the 30 pace limit - wanted to explore the Palace room by room using individual characters - some performing a holding action against the (infinite?) hordes. Unfortunately when you reach the limit, you can neither move towards nor away from the rest of the group, so in effect, you're immobilised duh! Speaking of immobility, how come you can still parry and riposte whilst being stunned? Oh yeah, re: missile weapons: it appears that the enemy can fire when next to you but you can't (except when a character gets charmed, then amazingly s/he CAN). Also while I'm remembering stuff: In the final battle, I noticed a summoned creature re-appeared in front of my party even though I'd left him fighting a desperate rear guard action; now that's magic for you! Overall, a gr8 game, reminded me of the good ol' days of Shard of Spring, Eternal Dagger and Phantasie III (on Commodore 128 in my case)... roll on the next one!
  2. Do we ever find out what that barrier was for (i.e in Avernum II)? Doesn't Khoth have a huge hoard somewhere (I was thinking it must be reached via the portal that barrier protected)? What kind of dragon doesn't have a huge hoard!? Maybe I missed it

  5. Bear with me From Dictionary.com: cleave   [kleev] Show IPA verb, cleft or cleaved or clove, cleft or cleaved or clo·ven, cleav·ing. verb (used with object) 1.to split or divide by or as if by a cutting blow, especially along a natural line of division, as the grain of wood. 2.to make by or as if by cutting: to cleave a path through the wilderness. 3.to penetrate or pass through (air, water, etc.): The bow of the boat cleaved the water cleanly. 4.to cut off; sever: to cleave a branch from a tree. verb (used without object) 5.to part or split, especially along a natural line of division. 6.to penetrate or advance by or as if by cutting (usually followed by through ) Now I think definitions 3 and 6 are closest to Avernum's usage of the term, but I still don't get how people to the side of someone get 'cleaved', especially by arrows (bounced off armour I suppose)? My poor mage got constantly cleaved in one quest, everytime I moved her she just got next to some other character due to the lack of space and got sliced, poor thing heheh
  6. Oh yeah, didn't think of that! Them voles r more advanced than they've bin givin credit for.

O I C Thanks, will do Edit: Bit l8 in the day now 'cos I on last quest darn it
  8. None of which we can shut, despite the party's inordinate power. OK fine, so who's the bleep that shuts the doors when we're not around? Come on, who is it? I know it's not us 'cos we're incapable. Just leave the darn doors open would you?! And Bela of Burqha: it's us, the biggest celebs/heroes in all Avernum, just open the gate already! Grr... rant over
  9. This says it gives you +3 to Pole weapons: how does that work then? I mean you can't hold it AND have a pole weapon so how do u get the bonus? Is just having it your backpack or quickswitch inventory enough?

Thanks Nikki, I must have got one 3 or 4 times, I think 'cos I make a habit of praying at the shrine in the Castle which gives u the curse if you've done something bad previously (stealing, etc). Re: OP. Hope you're finding it a bit easier now. I think the beginning when it's more of a struggle is more satisfying in a way, as there's more challenge and things to discover than later, which is more about to-ing and fro-ing to find the last few items/quests...
  11. Well I went back to Erika to report and got some new spells/potions etc, went back to Grah hoth and beat him fairly easily. I wonder if I was under a Dread curse the first time around (I never seem to notice when I get one )? How much difference does a Dread Curse make (maybe I should start another thread about it)? If you miss the text, is there any indication you are suffering from one? I make a habit of visiting the priest in Magi's Tower just in case LOL
  12. Thanks for that, I was wondering the same thing. Was one of the few quests left incomplete.
  13. Sorry if this is a sort of thread hijack but just wondered: Is level 33-35 alright for the Emperor's assassination and Grak-Hoth quests? I've tried them a couple of times at that level and just got slaughtered. All characters stunned and surrounded by demons, thwack thwack thwack yawn no fun LOL I gave up and did the Escape quest instead, which was a lot easier. But I still want to go back and do the other 2 but don't think the party is up to it tbh....
