  1. Hello. My party order is shaman sorcerer archer berzerker. How can I change the party order so the berzerker is up front as a shield? Thanks!
  2. Hey! Thank you. I'd missed that one. Very exciting! You wait so long for fantasy authors, it is very demoralising. Spiderweb Software is better. There is always a game to reload or catch up with, and the new stuff never stops coming. It's amazing.
  3. Advisable. You have until January 3rd. He's cranking it up again: http://www.penguin.com/book/the-heart-of-what-was-lost-by-tad-williams/9780756412487
  4. as I read through the Dragonbone Chair series of books, I started to see more and more of Simon Snowlock in Redbeard. At the end the description is a lot like a young Redbeard, I think. A kind of red-haired, beardy giant of a warrior, who never shrinks from hard decisions. So I think the inspires come from all around. Um, so you know, Jeff isn't old :-)
  5. http://www.spiderweb...don2/shots.html It's Nathalie and Sevilin. She injured her right arm on her ambition quest, remember? It never got better cos she's too Alpha to waste time with puny healing-types. Sevilin to Redbeard "Hey look I'm sorry and everything about your castle but it wasn't us, alright?"
  6. ...for Nathalie, see screenshot 4 of 8 here: http://www.spiderweb...don2/shots.html (wait! who is that cloaked figure?!!??) ...for Miranda, yes I suppose she will be a leader of Avadon's opposition. I never got the dialogue about finding her secrets during the rat hunt to work satisfactorily. She is a complex character. I think I will reload and try and find the part where she asks you to join her at the end.
  7. From the Avadon 2: The Corruption page: > But then Avadon was attacked. A sneak raid shattered the fortress, and, with it unable to keep order, madness has resulted. Civil war, barbarian raids, even conspiracies to destroy your people. Avadon’s power and influence has faded, and yet your people need it more than ever. Everything is falling apart, and a shadowy power has risen to destroy your homeland. What will you do? Will you fight your enemies? Or will you join them and end Avadon’s power once and for all? The choice is yours! > Madness has resulted! Madness I say! What will you do? I played a lawful Avadonian last time. I tried to be bad, but except for supporting my friends in their personal obsessions, I kept playing the basically loyal Hand. Except when the red mist descended in the end and I murdered my employer. Did Jeff overplay Avadon's badness last time? Or, did he underplay the extent to which conspiracies to "destroy your people" were held in check by the activities of Eyes and Hands? I feel like, in my 2&1/2~ish plays, I missed the point that I was protecting my people. I thought I was just doing dirty work. The result is known, the die is cast, might will win, and it is good, because weakness means civil war. Whether Avadon rules or someone else, the result is the same. Still, how will you get there? What will you do? This time, THIS time, I will JOIN my enemies and end Avadon’s power once and FOR ALL! Ok I doubt it. I will play a lawful Avadonian :^)
  8. Hi. Raced through the George RR Martin books. Too much torture and stuff (of the the reader!). Too hot! Tried a couple Robert Jordan. Too much like other fantasy writers. Too cold! On the second book of Steven Erikson's Malazan series. Has gods in it. Like the magic use. Just right!
  9. Hi Shaman is something of a Shaper-surrogate for me, as I like pets (well, summoned creatures that you send to their deaths). Last year I played Avadon as a Shaman, and I didn't find it so bad not playing as a tank. Praps it just takes longer. Anyway, what I always do first time, is play through the way it's set up as generic by the Author, on normal. So my answer is, "whatever I'm given". And then I will unbalance my friend-characters mightily by always taking the Shaman as my adventure companion :^) On a side note, when I had to ask the server for a new password just now, re-captcha gave me what I thought (wrongly) were the words: Tiateric Placido ...so now I have my main character's name !
  10. Catoblepas: in my next playthrough I will be palying as a complete Avadon Loyalist Dear Potato: I find difficult to stay as a rebel Hand The Rev: by the end I was convinced that the folks behind the conspiracy were no better, and probably worse, than Redbeard I liked hearing you all say this, because I agree completely, 'swhy I was playing this time through as a confirmed loyalist who helped in positive ways when I could. So this time through my character did everything possible for Dhorl Stead as enthusiastically as possible. And it was a pain to then be sent to Dhorl Stead as a destroyer, and not be able to avert that. It turns me rebel, as Miranda intended. Odd to hear that Jeff is surprised by this. I killed Gryfyn (cool fight!) then I reloaded and let him go, and thus I was able, after all, to express my character's rebellious feeling, and honour is satisfied.

Poison Mist>Call the Storm>Spirit Claw>Earthshatter After all that lot, without even a regenerate, the battlefield is quite transformed. I often don't get to call Hellhound. I like a Blessing Blademaster for Triumphant roar and Terrifying Howl, a Shaman, and Shadowwalker. I think my Blessing guy is possibly stronger with the Sorceress and Blademaster backup, but I like blademaster/shaman/shadowalker better anyhow

You are right, in that the game often states things to us in those terms. However, your use of the word "protection" is here relevant in the sense of The Godfather: abuse, bullying, extortion, oppression. These are the terms used to describe Casta'Arl's thugs in the early game. I don't expect Dhorl Stead to kiss my @ss. I just thought they wouldn't be so raring keen to die for an idea. A *bad* idea. I guess there are a lot of story lines in Avadon, and too many for EVERYTHING to be settled to my casual satisfaction =) Now I have to decide whether or not to kill Gryfyn. I am going to kill Redbeard, so to taunt optimally I will withhold the info. I suppose I will kill Gryfyn because it is a hard fight. But I wish it had some sort of impact on the game. RIchard
  14. I know I have tried this and found it impossible, and then tried it again and found it easy. As a general thing, unlike Avernum and Geneforge (IMO), in Avadon you should just hit and hit and hit, and not bother wasting turns on bless/buff/curse. Often if I abandon all strategy and start hitting, the fight is so close to over it doesn't matter. I think the shade has a limited range that her teleport-you spell works in. If you can hem her with pets you can get a lot of ranged shots in. Then if you choose a teleporter or shadowalker to go in close they can escape the statues (if they are teleported by the shade) Ciao
  15. Hi. I'm on my second time through. I'm playing to make sure and have all companions available to me for the Redbeard fight. First time through, when I found it too hard to defeat Redbeard without Shima, I reloaded and ended the game as a loyal hand. I'm not happy about ending the game as a loyal hand. I guess I can see that Avadon's antics mean there's no wars in the region. I guess it means that travellers and industries are (mostly) safe. I guess it means that non-human migratory beings are smeared into the ground. But I don't like the corruption, the colluding, the inefficiency, and the inevitability of destruction for all concerned when lands threaten the peace. I'm on my way to bring in the Lord of Cast'A arl now. And again I am really unhappy that the Dhorl Stead Runners will die to protect him and their pride (I know you can sneak past them , but you get my point) So I am feeling really disloyal. And I wish I had some way to express that within the game, besides waiting until the endgame, and beating on Redbeard. When it seems a bit futile anyway. I mean, what? Like I'm gonna do any better as a replacement Redbeard? And to get to him with enough stats to beat on him, you have to do all the corrupt stuff Avadon wants you to. I wish I could think of another way the game could go. If the hands revolt, there's a war, and that's bad. If the hands are loyal, there's a bad peace. Is Avadon saying that striving to do good in life is just an exercise in futility? Isn't there some other way the game could go? Is Geneforge really over?
  16. I, too reached Redbeard without Shima. Also, my characters were only level 27. I was forced into the embarrassing situation of tugging my forelock to the bigman after bursting in all hopped up for a scrap. I felt like I could have won the fight eventually, but it would have taken too many reloads. It makes sense, right? If I was REALLY the guy who could take down Redbeard, I would have been less loyal to the Pact (Redbeard's baby), and disdainful of the Holklandan's importance to it, and thus able to take out Shigaz, and win Shima's personal loyalty. I went back to the Shima mission (Monitor Shigaz?), but decided it was a dumb idea - my character was too squeaky clean to do the job. I've gone back to pre-wayward friends. I'm reading the text more closely, I'm exploring more completely, I'm being less loyal eg. The Wayfarer. Although I am unsure about the way the relationship works between him and Miranda. See what happens.
  17. I personally would not say non-customisable, in fact, just the opposite. If you want your character to be good at hitting and shooting things, you can load up the left column. If you want your character to be good at magic, load up the right (just be aware that the +1+2 bonuses apply to existing skills, they don't seem to unlock new ones (?)). This is available to magic, and non-magic-focused character alike, which is a great flexibility. At the same time, I'm not sure it's possible to create a build that really sucks, and I'm sure I've done that in previous games. Plus you can load in a scarab to offset some perceived skill-lack as you go along. So my favorite build for a blademaster leader was to give him a strong right tree for a lot of blessing - but then all the battle scarabs he could carry. I almost never made use of retrain, and when I did, I changed back after:-) Though a noted scatterbrain, I was able to carry a clear idea of build all the way through, without feeling like I was locked in to anything, or missing out. Of course, my favorite item in the whole game was the blinking pants. It affects ability tree design because I gave them to Nathalie and found that she never really left attack range, and yet always blinked out of trouble - so no need for extra endurance, and thus more points to spend on blowing things up.
  18. >>A shaman is rarely alone. She can call wolves or, eventually, drakes to serve and protect her I guess this means summon? (... "a summoned creature fades" ...) It would be great if you could summon a pet to stay with you for the whole game. (yes, I know - it's called Geneforge :-)
