Hey, you're on the surface! Do you really want to go back into the caves? This was your personal quest from the start. But if you want to have Sulfras' weapon - and armor! - for later battles, you could get to the surface first, and come back & grab the stuff on the way back. From another recent thread - I never tried - can you use the "word of recall" to exit from Sulfras' lair? "Thief-b-gone". Otherwise your battle Click to reveal.. includes doom guardians (I think?) inside the walls. Should add "word of recall" to the "weird spells" thread.
  3. Just for the record, I didn't stick with that effort long; big surprise, eh ? "Really patient": try mind-numbingly tedious. Besides, the net levels gained over a more rational build will level out, and not at a high enough level to entirely compensate for the negative traits. But that's part of the, um, "joy" of the undertaking ;-) Another thing to note is that the marginal value of knowledge potions etc. goes down with trait negativity. Still, it's fun to have more skill points to play with earlier in the game.
  4. When the Avernites mine, what do they find ? Not carbon, sulfur & potassium nitrate; they find metal (ores?) and magic crystals. The "guns" of Avernum are wands, magic bows, and other enchanted items. Progress: arbitrary value judgement. Assume the Avernites created a game, one that emulated our world: who would be feeling sorry for who ? Transport: there was a "return" spell, or something, in E1-3, I think. E1-2, anyway. So, this is how to join the loyalists ? Who'd'a figured them for existentialists ;-)
  5. So Avernum has been experiencing deflation. Interesting. Perhaps foreshadowing the crash of A6. The caves don't collapse, the economy does. Gee, that'll be depressing. So much for escape :-p

  7. Shockwave: damage increased out to a distance of ten units in all directions; it was pretty strong at the limits. Best part: it could hit through walls (although you had to be careful about friendlies in the vicinity because of this). Assassinating Hawthorne: before entering the throne room, stand in the middle of the adjacent wall & cast multiple shockwaves. Gets everyone except those in the last couple of rows by the throne. They never knew what was hitting them. The horror, the horror !
  8. You pretty much only need the "never eat" part anyway. All those anorexic, but well directed, wanderers !
  9. This reminds me of the frail / brittle bones armor adjustment.
  10. Go back & talk to the shaman again ...
  11. Only peripherally related: I'm wondering if forums will begin seeing a rise in multi-posting due to twitter's influence. There may be a need for explicitly remarking on the difference in forum c.o.c.'s and their analogs here and elsewhere.

Beyond that, it's limitations adopted for other purposes ("morals are the most expensive vice"). So, I save before doing anything irreversible. As for barriers, I seriously considered de-geasing and eventually adapting my priest into a barrier-dispelling mage, but there are really only a handful that don't respond to crystals - mostly seeming to contain rare crafting materials But locks - I'm o-c about those, and always get lots of TU.
  13. Um, or the obvious, which hasn't been stated: have you been saving as you go along ? If so, you may not need to go all the way back to the beginning. Strategic save/loading is a significant part of games like these, unless you're doing a permadeath run *shudder*. That said, I was playing through on easy using three dedicated archers (never lifted a blade) and an archer/priest (-0- mage) which is decidedly non-optimal even _after_ joining the Anama. Surely there must be some combination of items and tactics that can get you out of Tranquility. edit: and zero lores as well.
  14. the "[name], who ..." form as a message postscript may or may not be gimmicky here, but was a fairly common sight on usenet and lists once upon a time - is it still ? not sure if it started before that on the pre-internet bbs's, but that would seem to be a reasonable assumption. i wonder where / when was the original use of that... it's also kind of funny that the new customizable user titles seem to be relatively static and are a more reliable way of identifying the poster on sight (along with a few of the higher post count levels) than the arbitrary pdn's flying around. i'm tempted to use the word "ironic", but that's almost like bringing up hitler...
  15. Originally Posted By: rclear666 ... the dialgue box above it offers no options at all! Not that I think this is your issue, but I've run into that when using rdp to (attempt to) run the game on another machine. Doesn't work, of course; never has. At that point, the remote machine uses a different driver to support rdp (RDPDD.dll), not the one you'd get when connecting directly. In that mode, all the graphics acceleration features are unavailable. To even just start the older games, the initial video mode of the rdp session had to be the one the game expected to use - switching video modes mid-session isn't allowed. Assuming that all of that was accomplished, the game would run, but so slowly as to be unusable. However, there are additional problems with GF5 that did not occur - missing images / badly rendered text graphics. Who knows, maybe this info is of value to the overall Windows / GF5 performance issue. Any clue at this point may be helpful.
  16. Very early game yet. I was trying to decide whether I wanted to start over with less focus on strength, and your responses helped, thanks. I hadn't gotten to the point yet where encumbrance concerns would have naturally allowed me to reach those thresholds, so I went back and just added the odds & ends I had available without regard to weight. On the F/BB PC, armor pieces of 4x2% + 2x4% + 1x16% resulted in a total armor of 2%. On a F PC, the same combination = 21% total armor. On a BB PC, = 14%. Huh. I'll have to think about that a bit more. Considered separately, a multiplicative armor penalty of 10% applied to F and 20% applied to BB results in the numbers above, but I can't get to the 2% for F/BB combined. Perhaps I made a mistake somewhere, or I'm missing some other important factor.
  17. I haven't seen anything on this. I started playing a frail, brittle bones singleton on torment, and noticed after a bit that the armor percent remained at zero no matter what was equipped. Specific resistances were as expected and seemed unaffected. I changed the level to easy, and created PCs with only frail, only brittle bones, and only delicate skin (in case this happened with any disadvantage trait). In both the frail and brittle bones cases, armor remained at 0% with the initial leather armor, while the delicate skin PC had armor as expected at 10%. From an RP perspective, this F/BB guy is so bad he subverts his own armor ;-) Not a big deal, but I had been pumping strength to be able to wear better armor. Instead I should have been focusing on defensive skills (although being able to handle armor for other beneficial effects would be useful). Bug ? Eh. Choosing this insane route means just accepting what goes with the territory.
  18. I reported the same bug for A4 some time back. As for getting it "fixed", I don't mind having the option available. I haven't actually tried this in A5, though. [Validating the find seemed more important than thread resurrection concerns.]

Over at WineHQ, their program database lists A5 (and the other Avernums) as working just fine with Wine on a couple Linux distros, so I suspect this is yet another symptom of the highly stripped-down XO OS. Originally Posted By: Lt. Sullust ... I've learned that remote desktop also resolve these issues. ... Kinda defeats the time-filler mode I was hoping for. It would be nice to know what specifically is stopping A5/Wine from running on XO, and even nicer would be a solution, but the cryptic error message combined with the closed source game and the rare configuration makes this unlikely. And now, with XP for XO on the table, maybe this all just goes away. Too bad, as this odd Fedora / Sugar animal has sort of grown on me (like an annoying but endearing mole - ok, wart). Want to pursue this further ? PM is fine. Not sure this is of any public interest. (However, be patient with my response time; in the middle of evil work things.)
  20. Quote: by Anarhiztok: Is there any way to disable autosave in a4?????? change the name of the folder Code: [installation location]\Avernum 4\Data\Save19 to something besides "Save19". you will get a minor error message when autosaves would otherwise occur.

  22. minor bug / exploit: the old keyboard shortcut "c" brings up a "cast spell" dialog from which any mage or priest spell that you have access to may be cast, regardless of encumbrances. one can "c"ast at time where one cannot otherwise use "m"age spells (or click on the button). didn't see this mentioned anywhere - did i miss it ?
