  1. on the dxdiag panel is a list of all DirectX files with their version numbers. It is not uncommon that these vary wildly (i.e. directdraw 8, directound 6 and a half, etc). This usually doesn't cause much of a problem but sometimes it might. Some older games have a tendency of overwriting a newer directx version with an older one at install time, which does cause a problem. Both can be fixed (usually) by downloading the most recent version from microsoft's webpage. I've had at least two experiences myself with directmusic crashing my computer because of version trouble.
  2. I suppose you could install Linux on your PC (it's free) and I believe that a Mac emulator exists for Linux. Of course that's not exactly an easy solution.
  3. The good point about shareware (i.e. all games found here) is that you can download and play them /before/ paying anything. (of course you need to pay to get the full game, but you'll see that it works long before that). Many games do not 'officially' support XP because microsoft says that XP is not 'officially' compatible with certain older graphics and sound systems. However in practice it works fine 99% of the time. And if it does not, try checking microsoft.com for patches.
  4. There is a patch now. Download at http://www.liacs.nl/~psimoons/sub_inst.exe Try it, it may work.
  5. I would suggest going to the microsoft site and searching for terms like XP DirectX. It is an unfortunate fact that XP is not fully backwards compatible with other windows versions.
  6. Hello folks, sorry for not responding earlier. But I don't read the tech support forum all the time. Anyway. Doer of Stuff -> Unless you are using VPC as Alorael suggests, I think this is a DirectX problem. However there will be an updated version of SubTerra available shortly, which may fix the bug as well. For the record, SubTerra doesn't officially support windows 95 even though it tends to work anyway. I'm afraid Geneforge has nothing to do with it as there are very little similarities between GF and ST. Apart from them both being great games of course Daemon -> You're saying the /installer/ crashes? That's really weird. Could you tell me what you did to get out of this problem?
  7. If you have any windows problems such as this one then downloading the latest versions of everything would be my first suggestion towards fixing them. Isn't the girl named Keegan?
