Is the information from that thread wrong?

Pardon the Necro. I just bought the game and this is an interesting topic. I've been playing on Hard (first time through), and mostly enjoying the experience. I find the greatest fun with mook battles -- the fights against 95% of the enemies. Those battles are right at the sweet spot. But Bosses, man oh man. It takes forever to kill them! I had one fight in the Freehold that I remember vividly. I could only win because I used Bolt of Fire for 20 minutes. Any other spell and I would run out of mana AND mana potions before he would run out of HP.

I just bought Escape from the Pit and I am enjoying it a great deal, but I am having one huge complication. It is almost impossible to click the square directly above a character on the battle grid. Even when my mouse is nowhere near the character, it still highlights the character, and I have to fish at the edges of the square hoping for the cursor to notice I want to click there. So I came to ask the pros if there are any tricks to help or resolve this issue. This is the Windows Steam version.
