Five Factor Personality Model

Slarti

Recommended Posts

Today I came across a link to a five-factor personality test and took it for kicks. This is the model most widely used in academic psychology. In contrast to the MBTI, it is only interested in describing observable behavior and surface-level thoughts, and does not speculate about underlying thought processes. As such, its results tend to generate much more subdued reactions. You may prefer this, or you may like it less.

The test I used is here:

http://www.personal.psu.edu/~j5j/IPIP/ipipneo120.htm

Of course, taking any online test would be incomplete without posting the results here and asking others to do the same. I like this one more than others I've seen online, because it gives you scores for all the "facets" and not just the five main categories, yet is also relatively short, at "only" 120 questions.

Highlights from my scores:

OPENNESS - 98

All scores in the 80's and 90's, except for Adventurousness at 58.

AGREEABLENESS - 82

Most scores in the 80's, Sympathy high at 99, Cooperation lower at 72... and Trust sitting by itself at 1.

CONSCIENTIOUSNESS - 75

These scores varied the most, from Cautiousness and Dutifulness at 96 and 88 to Self-Discipline at 26.

NEUROTICISM - 44

These scores were mostly in the 30's through 50's. Depression was highest at 52, Vulnerability lowest at 18.

EXTRAVERSION - 3

These were mostly in the 20's and 30's, except for Excitement-Seeking at 1 and Cheerfulness at... wait for it... zero. :)

Extraversion 3. Of note, friendliness and assertiveness were fairly high, while the rest were all below 5.

Agreeableness 78. Also all hovering around 80, with trust as the low outlier and sympathy and cooperation as the high outliers. And I'm skeptical about disagreeable people making good scientists. It's a very collaborative field, and it's even more a networking field.

Conscientiousness: 71. Wide-ranging, from orderliness 12 (I know my weaknesses!) to dutifulness and cautiousness at 96.

Neuroticism 37. Self-consciousness spiked to 83, but anger and immoderation were both below ten, with the rest scattered around 40-50.

—Alorael, who was surprised by his agreeableness and the extent to which he was not extroverted. The rest was all as expected. Oh, hey, Slarty. Where does finishing tasks go, and what did you get on that?

Ah, yes, the Big 5 Personality Test or OCEAN test. Much more legitimate, in my eyes, than Myers-Briggs, but also less exciting.

I scored high extraversion across the board. I had average agreeableness, though with really low modesty and morality, high trust and sympathy, and everything else average. I also got average conscientiousness, with self-efficacy and self-discipline being high while dutifulness was low. I'm a little dubious about my self-discipline, but I definitely can buckle down when needed, I suppose. There was a low score on neuroticism, with immoderation being the only high score there. I also got high openness across the board.

This all seems in tune with what I already knew of myself, so it's good to see I have a good handle on my identity.

Alorael: "Self-discipline — what many people call will-power — refers to the ability to persist at difficult or unpleasant tasks until they are completed. People who possess high self-discipline are able to overcome reluctance to begin tasks and stay on track despite distractions. Those with low self-discipline procrastinate and show poor follow-through, often failing to complete tasks-even tasks they want very much to complete." I received a 26. Surprising, I know.

Triumph: Probably. There is now more than Ooc Interference in the way, unfortunately, but I would like to deal with that and get on with the bus story.

— Slarty, who notes that Alorael seems to have given similar answers, despite having apparently taken the Four Factor Test.

Of note, I'm worse off than you when it comes to self discipline, Slarty. :p

In the appreciation to art category, I was disappointed to see no questions about music appreciation. Museums with paintings and sculptures are... nice... the first time through so I didn't score big, but skipping the musical aspect of art skewed the results imo. Cuz I do love my music.

I also think the lack of questions about puzzles, riddles, invention and strategic games skews the intellect towards those who like to discuss ideas with other people rather than pondering by oneself.

For example, taking the test as a whole and looking at things over the past 15 odd years led me to wonder about trends in my own life. Depression and Self-Consciousness have markedly increased since high school while Friendliness and Cheerfulness have markedly decreased. Theories as to the cause weigh heavily on marriage and children. Many many underlying things to speculate on here, but ultimately I see an introvert having to share 'alone time' with more and more people who don't necessarily get along with one another. I expect the trend will reverse as I send them off to college and/or their own lives.

This test is surprisingly accurate, although I'm surprised by the high score in adventurousness. Zero cheerfulness, ninety-nine cautiousness.

Did anyone notice that Sylae edited her results to say "ponies" instead of "persons"?

I think that some of those are pretty close, but I doubt I'm as dramatically Manichean as the test makes me out to be. I'm not quite sure why they came out as 1's and 0's (I would have guess high single digits or low teens myself), though. I think part of the problem is that I tend to flanderize my own responses by only picking the "Agree/Disagree strongly" options. I think I had a grand total of 3 "Neither agree nor disagree" options out of all 120, and I doubt I had many more than thirty or forty "Mildly agree/disagree".

I took the test. I think most of it's spot-on, but there's a few areas that made me raise an eyebrow.

EXTRAVERSION...............6 - "Your score on Extraversion is low, indicating you are introverted, reserved, and quiet. You enjoy solitude and solitary activities. Your socializing tends to be restricted to a few close friends."

Click to reveal..
Friendliness.............3 - "Low scorers on Friendliness are not necessarily cold and hostile, but they do not reach out to others and are perceived as distant and reserved."

Gregariousness...........4 - "Low scorers tend to feel overwhelmed by, and therefore actively avoid, large crowds. They do not necessarily dislike being with people sometimes, but their need for privacy and time to themselves is much greater than for individuals who score high on this scale."

Assertiveness............54 - "High scorers Assertiveness like to speak out, take charge, and direct the activities of others. They tend to be leaders in groups. Low scorers tend not to talk much and let others control the activities of groups. Your level of assertiveness is average."

Activity Level...........0 - "People who score low on this scale follow a slower and more leisurely, relaxed pace."

Excitement-Seeking.......26 - "Low scorers are overwhelmed by noise and commotion and are adverse to thrill-seeking."

Cheerfulness.............46 - "This scale measures positive mood and feelings, not negative emotions (which are a part of the Neuroticism domain). Persons who score high on this scale typically experience a range of positive feelings, including happiness, enthusiasm, optimism, and joy. Low scorers are not as prone to such energetic, high spirits. Your level of positive emotions is average."

(These results do not surprise me in the slightest, and feel pretty accurate to me.)

AGREEABLENESS..............28 - "Your score on Agreeableness is low, indicating less concern with others' needs Than with your own. People see you as tough, critical, and uncompromising."

Click to reveal..
Trust....................51 - "A person with high trust assumes that most people are fair, honest, and have good intentions. Persons low in trust see others as selfish, devious, and potentially dangerous. Your level of trust is average."

Morality.................19 - "Low scorers believe that a certain amount of deception in social relationships is necessary. [...] [People] generally find it more difficult to relate to the unstraightforward low-scorers on this scale. It should be made clear that low scorers are not unprincipled or immoral; they are simply more guarded and less willing to openly reveal the whole truth."

Altruism.................5 - "Low scorers on this scale do not particularly like helping those in need. Requests for help feel like an imposition rather than an opportunity for self-fulfillment."

Cooperation..............26 - "Individuals who score high on this scale dislike confrontations. They are perfectly willing to compromise or to deny their own needs in order to get along with others. Those who score low on this scale are more likely to intimidate others to get their way."

Modesty..................74 - "High scorers on this scale do not like to claim that they are better than other people. In some cases this attitude may derive from low self-confidence or self-esteem. Nonetheless, some people with high self-esteem find immodesty unseemly."

Sympathy.................41 - "People who score high on this scale are tenderhearted and compassionate. They feel the pain of others vicariously and are easily moved to pity. Low scorers are not affected strongly by human suffering. They pride themselves on making objective judgments based on reason. They are more concerned with truth and impartial justice than with mercy. Your level of tender-mindedness is average."

(Again, not a lot of surprises. I think Altruism's been tainted by recent events, though; I generally give help when asked and generally don't mind it, but I've been getting volunteered quite a bit without my consent, which tends to grate on my nerves and, as the scale description says, feels like an imposition.)

CONSCIENTIOUSNESS..........6 - "Your score on Conscientiousness is low, indicating you like to live for the moment and do what feels good now. Your work tends to be careless and disorganized."

Click to reveal..
Self-Efficacy............24 - "Low scorers do not feel effective, and may have a sense that they are not in control of their lives."

Orderliness..............3 - "Low scorers tend to be disorganized and scattered."

Dutifulness..............54 - "This scale reflects the strength of a person's sense of duty and obligation. Those who score high on this scale have a strong sense of moral obligation. Low scorers find contracts, rules, and regulations overly confining. They are likely to be seen as unreliable or even irresponsible. Your level of dutifulness is average."

Achievement-Striving.....1 - "Low scorers are content to get by with a minimal amount of work, and might be seen by others as lazy."

Self-Discipline..........9 - "Those with low self-discipline procrastinate and show poor follow-through, often failing to complete tasks-even tasks they want very much to complete."

Cautiousness.............38 - "Cautiousness describes the disposition to think through possibilities before acting. High scorers on the Cautiousness scale take their time when making decisions. Low scorers often say or do first thing that comes to mind without deliberating alternatives and the probable consequences of those alternatives. Your level of cautiousness is average."

(I am content to get by with a 1 in Achievement. tongue )

NEUROTICISM................69 - "Your score on Neuroticism is high, indicating that you are easily upset, even by what most people consider the normal demands of living. People consider you to be sensitive and emotional." (See inside)

Click to reveal..
Anxiety..................93 - "The "fight-or-flight" system of the brain of anxious individuals is too easily and too often engaged. Therefore, people who are high in anxiety often feel like something dangerous is about to happen. They may be afraid of specific situations or be just generally fearful. They feel tense, jittery, and nervous."

Anger....................88 - "Persons who score high in Anger feel enraged when things do not go their way. They are sensitive about being treated fairly and feel resentful and bitter when they feel they are being cheated. This scale measures the tendency to feel angry; whether or not the person expresses annoyance and hostility depends on the individual's level on Agreeableness."

Depression...............30 - "This scale measures the tendency to feel sad, dejected, and discouraged. [...] Low scorers tend to be free from these depressive feelings."

Self-Consciousness.......58 - "Self-conscious individuals are sensitive about what others think of them. Their concern about rejection and ridicule cause them to feel shy and uncomfortable abound others. They are easily embarrassed and often feel ashamed. Their fears that others will criticize or make fun of them are exaggerated and unrealistic, but their awkwardness and discomfort may make these fears a self-fulfilling prophecy. Low scorers, in contrast, do not suffer from the mistaken impression that everyone is watching and judging them. They do not feel nervous in social situations. Your level or self-consciousness is average."

Immoderation.............48 - "Immoderate individuals feel strong cravings and urges that they have have difficulty resisting. They tend to be oriented toward short-term pleasures and rewards rather than long- term consequences. Low scorers do not experience strong, irresistible cravings and consequently do not find themselves tempted to overindulge. Your level of immoderation is average."

Vulnerability............48 - "High scorers on Vulnerability experience panic, confusion, and helplessness when under pressure or stress. Low scorers feel more poised, confident, and clear-thinking when stressed. Your level of vulnerability is average."

(I feel this is mostly accurate, with one MASSIVE exception: Anxiety. I am NOT an anxious person. I think every person I know in real life, and even any person on these forums who know me, can attest that I'm not constantly tense or jittery. I do get nervous occasionally, but it's not like I'm on constant pins and needles, which this test is suggesting. Unfortunately, I think the over-the-top Anxiety score is skewing the whole Neuroticism scale high.)

OPENNESS TO EXPERIENCE.....21 - "Your score on Openness to Experience is low, indicating you like to think in plain and simple terms. Others describe you as down-to-earth, practical, and conservative." (Which is odd when you look at my liberalism score)

Click to reveal..
Imagination..............89 - "To imaginative individuals, the real world is often too plain and ordinary. High scorers on this scale use fantasy as a way of creating a richer, more interesting world."

Artistic Interests.......40 - "High scorers on this scale love beauty, both in art and in nature. They become easily involved and absorbed in artistic and natural events. They are not necessarily artistically trained nor talented, although many will be. The defining features of this scale are interest in, and appreciation of natural and artificial beauty. Low scorers lack aesthetic sensitivity and interest in the arts. Your level of artistic interests is average.

Emotionality.............1 - "Low scorers are less aware of their feelings and tend not to express their emotions openly."

Adventurousness..........19 - "Low scorers tend to feel uncomfortable with change and prefer familiar routines."

Intellect................1 - "Low scorers on Intellect prefer dealing with either people or things rather than ideas. They regard intellectual exercises as a waste of time. Intellect should not be equated with intelligence. Intellect is an intellectual style, not an intellectual ability, although high scorers on Intellect score slightly higher than low-Intellect individuals on standardized intelligence tests."

Liberalism...............79 - "Psychological liberalism refers to a readiness to challenge authority, convention, and traditional values. In its most extreme form, psychological liberalism can even represent outright hostility toward rules, sympathy for law-breakers, and love of ambiguity, chaos, and disorder."

(Intellect's score surprised me; it wasn't until I thought about how I think of religion, the metaphysical and unknowable, and so forth that I realized the score actually makes sense. Other than that, I'm mostly just amused at how my openness score is low and suggesting of conservatism, yet I've got 79 on Liberalism)

I hate to be a killjoy, but this version of the test, while fine for individual contemplation, sucks for comparing answers online. The resulting scores are different depending on which gender plus age class you are in. Sylae's scores not comparable to Iffy's scores are not comparable to Dantius's scores are not... well, you get the point. In some instances, the percentiles are likely to be drastically different (for instance, neuroticism between men and women in the same age group). Unless you know and care what category someone is in, the numbers are mostly meaningless.

Also, with only two options for gender, non-binary folks can't take the test. Or they might, but the results are likely to be inaccurate. Dikiyoba also finds that sucky.

This was too tempting to pass up. Click here for Too Much Information about meatspace me!

Ah man, I was really hoping to get first place for Neuroticism. Second Third place will have to do. And, uh, maybe I should retake this test once I'm done my Masters and less burnt out.

@Diki: Huh. I just assumed that those questions were just there for the researchers, and didn't impact results. Too late and tired to check if you can do the test with those blank. Anyway, don't really feel like a redo.

Nope. The country is just to help researchers, but age and sex are an integral and unavoidable part of this verion of the test. Note one of the instructions:
Quote:
Describe yourself as you honestly see yourself, in relation to other people you know of the same sex as you are, and roughly your same age.

Huh. Interesting -- that definitely explains some of the variance we've seen: I guess the answers are, in fact, all percentile scores relative to a specific age and gender category.

Well, that's stupid. Meh.

Also, here's this:

  • 1 year later...

I saw this topic and thought that Slarty may have returned. Nevertheless, I took the test again to see what changed.

My sense of extraversion has remained high, but my agreeableness has dipped to being low instead of average. I think this is a result of my sympathy waning; I'm still very trusting, however. Cooperation is high, but everything else is low. For conscientiousness, there was no change. Neuroticism is now average, which I attribute to a stressful year at college rather than my more relaxed time last summer. Immoderation remains high, but my anxiety and depression scores have both creeped up a little. Openness stayed high, though I'm decidedly less open to emotionality than I previously scored. I think this may be because I don't care too much about what others are feeling, though, rather than any change in my attitude towards my own emotions.

I feel it's generally accurate, apart from higher Neuroticism than what I'd think.

I am agreeable, friendly, outgoing and trusting, but apparently I score zero on the morality scale--interesting. But that sounds about right. I usually get what i want by using any means neccessary. It just so happens that what I want to is top make myself and others happy most of the time.

This test was quite lulzy for me...

-----

EXTRAVERSION...............22

Your score on Extraversion is low, indicating you are introverted, reserved, and quiet. You enjoy solitude and solitary activities. Your socializing tends to be restricted to a few close friends.

AGREEABLENESS..............16

Your score on Agreeableness is low, indicating less concern with others' needs Than with your own. People see you as tough, critical, and uncompromising.

CONSCIENTIOUSNESS..........84

Your score on Conscientiousness is high. This means you set clear goals and pursue them with determination. People regard you as reliable and hard-working.

NEUROTICISM................34

Your score on Neuroticism is average, indicating that your level of emotional reactivity is typical of the general population. Stressful and frustrating situations are somewhat upsetting to you, but you are generally able to get over these feelings and cope with these situations.

OPENNESS TO EXPERIENCE.....47

Your score on Openness to Experience is average, indicating you enjoy tradition but are willing to try new things. Your thinking is neither simple nor complex. To others you appear to be a well-educated person but not an intellectual.

Does the test say I do not have the requirements of a Jedi? If not then, I'll turn to the dark side, don't make me do this :S

Yeah, that sounds like Chaotic Good in D&D terms. :p

The D and D personalities are very much flawed. The reasoning is that chaotic-neutral makes no sense. Jarlaxle is chaotic-neutral yet he makes the right choice to save Drizzt because Drizzt is a good guy. He does this out of altruism so he would be considered chaotic/good. Yet he is made neutral just because he kills a few people. Here's a news flash-killing bad people isn't going to make you indirectly bad. If anything it should be considered a good thing.

The problem with this is that as soon as a neutral good character kills an unarmed/noncombative evil guy without giving him a chance he is considered evil/neutral which is wrong. If the guy was evil it is a good thing. Im not talking laws, they only get in the way. Laws are a way of making people stay in line and evil not so bad.

If the world was to turn to anarchy tomorrow, everyone that was good would be neutral eventually as they would have to kill a bit. They would have to steal, etc. Laws make people more civilized and in my eyes are a good thing. If all the laws went away, we'd have a major problem. People that cant get their food, medicine, etc. would get desperate. If you've seen some of the MILD behavior we had in Hurricane Sandy (NJ) you'd catch the drift right away. People were nuts.

Im not saying the people in the world are naturally bad, but you need a strong law system to combat evil even if it doesn't cure all of it.

Although it doesn't matter, my personality has always come up Chaotic/Neutral but in many ways is more True/Neutral, Lawful/Neutral. I don't bother people so long as they don't bother me or do something mean, sadistic. I can be terribly mean/sadistic to people that bully others or myself. I dislike any form of bullying and thus that is my one traits.

I really don't follow your argument at all. An alignment does not simply describe your ultimate goal but the way you choose to pursue that goal. If you showed compassion to a bad person, should that be an act of Evil? If it isn't, then neither should killing someone evil (in itself) be considered an act of Good. It would be a Neutral act at best, and only if it were immediately necessary to defend someone. (I'd give paladins some leeway there because they essentially have a divine license to fight evil, but note that even a paladin couldn't get away with killing a defenseless Evil-aligned person.)

That means the alignment system isn't some scoring system of moral worth, because it can be argued in most situations that there is no such system. Being Chaotic-Neutral ("I did what I had to do") doesn't make you a worse person than being Chaotic-Good.

Whether its D and D or not D and D-I still wouldn't find anything wrong with offing an evil person. If I had a chance and could prevent world war 2, I would take Hitler down a notch and hope for the best. I could care less whether its evil, neutral or good-its preventing a future tragedy which is what matters. I don't think you can get away with being nicey nice. Evil people like that have no rules and therefore neither should the person that takes them down.

How is killing a defenseless evil person bad?

I always thought that acting outside the norms of common good/altruistic behavior would be considered evil. Someone killing another person without a reason or to kill a mass amount of people for no reason. Those are strong indicators that the person is not playing with a full deck and is evil. Anything that is pointless murder or stuff like that. Rapists and child sexual abusers should be executed without a trial. The problem is the justice system in America awards the bad guys with life imprisonments/temporary insanity. Its a disgrace.

1. There is no way to determine whether people are guilty or "evil". Evidence can be and is misleading or faked. Confessions can be and are coerced. People don't carry little flashing alignment signs. There's simply no way to tell.

2. The USA has and continues to execute or give life sentences to thousands of demonstrably innocent people, even with trials. Moving to executions without trials would magnify that problem and result in the murder of tens of thousands of people.

3. Killing people, except to defend yourself or another person from a clear and immediate danger, is wrong. You can't kill someone who is defenseless. You can't kill someone who is minding their own business. You can't kill anyone who isn't currently attempting to harm anyone. To do otherwise is wrong.

4. To paraphrase Sam Vimes, you can't be a good guy and do bad guy things. If you kill people, you are the bad guy, no matter what the intent behind the killing was.

5. Killing people makes you evil.

6. KILLING PEOPLE MAKES YOU EVIL.

Arguments about the D&D alignment grid have been going on for decades, and will continue on for decades more. My two cents' worth:

- Personally, I'd consider killing a defenceless Evil person to be a Chaotic (or at the very least a non-Lawful) act, and not (necessarily) an Evil act. Killing someone in the heat of battle is one thing, executing them when they could be bound and brought to trial is another. You're taking the law into your own hands, not a very Lawful thing to do. That said, this can be setting-dependant: perhaps Paladins are officially sanctioned to act as judge, jury, and executioner. Think Spectres from the Mass Effect universe.

- Again personally, where I draw the line between Good and Neutral is how much you're willing to sacrifice. Most Neutral people hate to see Evil acts done, and help others out when they can. But they wouldn't destroy themselves financially -- or literally -- to save someone else. Likewise, the difference between a Neutral and a Lawful character is that the Neutral character follows the law, but the Lawful character upholds it.

- Ultimately, this is all subject to DM fiat, because spells like Detect Evil, Chaos Hammer, Protection from Good, etc., are things that exist. To pick an example, I once made a Dwarven Cleric of Tiamat (draconic goddess of greed, essentially). Completely amoral, utterly avaricious, a social Darwinian... think an over-the-top Gordon Gekko and you've got a good start. But. He stayed on the good sides of the powers that be, didn't do anything that could possibly be tracked back to him? Why would he? Adventuring paid much better than crime did. I put him down as Unaligned (this was 4e), but my DM had me change it to Evil. I base alignment on actions, he bases it on motives. *shrugs*

- Another important point is that alignment is a description, not a guideline. Think of it as an average of your previous actions, a shorthand way of giving new players an idea of what your character's like -- and not a straitjacket that compels you to take certain actions. I've only read one book with Jarlaxle in it, and he seemed pretty much CN. Maybe he does save one dude out of the goodness of his heart, but one Good act does not make someone good. To pick another example from another campaign, I once played a LG Dwarf Fighter. Devoted to restoring his homeland under rightful rule, risked his life again and again (and gave it again and again -- this was D&D) for the good of his homeland (and ultimately the multiverse -- this was Planescape). He also tortured his captives for information, and then summarily executed them (suffice to say it's interesting playing a Lawful character when you're literally the last legitimate authority in the land).

No.

Truly awful things have happened and continue to happen. Not saying it doesn't happen. People reach a point to where they can't return from doing truly awful things and they can't be (realistically) helped. Not saying it doesn't happen. What I'm saying is that the concept of evil is thrown around, but I've never seen a solid definition on it. Sometimes it's tagged onto anything awful, sometimes it's described as an ultimatum, that something or something is purely evil or not (which I don't think is correct, since there's a lot of factors going into what someone does). From what I've observed, debating the concept of evil would be like debating perfection—it's hard to do since no one defines it the same way.

(Though then, I made the comment since I thought the thread was going in a completely different direction than it is now. D&D is a bit different since it's more defined, plus it's fantasy.)
