Let's Play Geneforge 5

365 posts in this topic

Having been inspired by some others on this forum and by my desire to find a new hobby I have decided to record my commentated playthrough of Geneforge 5. I've played through Geneforge's 1 to 4 and am entering into 5 totally unknown but not unprepared. Would love it if you guys could check it out.

First time I have ever recorded or uploaded to youtube so feel free to offer some constructive criticism. I am a big boy so don't worry about hurting my feelings. :)

Check it out

Glad you like the series. Makes it easier to keep engaged, for sure.

I've uploaded episodes 1-4 so far.

I'm playing this for myself more than looking for mega views so I'll be updating the whole story. Will be doing more recording tonight and will probably increase to a slightly longer video time otherwise I'll have 200+ vids before the end.

Feedback is always welcome if you had an opinion on anything.

A few more episodes up now. Extended the length to about 25 minutes for each for a more solid viewing experience.

Meeting up with Shaper Rawal again only to be sent off on some frivolous quest to find an unnamed villain who is terrorising his creations.

Still Hunting for 'The Presence'. Jeff could have probably thought of a better name for this. It sounds like a cartoon villain.

First encounter with 'The Presence'.

And

is live. This mostly involves me tidying up some odds and ends that I had missed in my first few videos. I do create a few new friends and Fyora Alhoon makes an appearance.

I don't plan on having a reload heavy game so if (and when) creations die I will try to preserve that timeline. This does mean I might need new names instead of reusing the same old ones I have now.

Any volunteers to be a named creation?

I think you might need a very palatable vlish. No, more... tasty. More than tasty. What's the word I'm after...

Appetising, delectable, enticing, exquisite, heavenly, piquant, yummy, ambrosial, mouthwatering, nectarous, scrumptious, titillating.

Do any of those match the word you are looking for? :)

Well, sounds like my hand has been forced. going to have to get some magic shaping then.

Will be recording more shortly. Uploads in the near future.

EDIT: And

is up. Next mini-boss fight with 'The Presence' and by far the closest battle yet. Suffering casualties in my fragile Fyora army.

No Vlish yet so various tasty names have not been invoked. Did anyone else want to drop their name into the creation name pool? Expect to die to my callous shaper disregard for your creations life but expect it to be glorious. And once enough die you will be cycled back in again. *It's the CIIIIIRCLE OF LIIIFE*

The next part has gone live. Get

.

I encounter 'The Presence for the 3rd and hopefully last time.

I am also struggling with a clear guide on who to side with in this game. The rebels are rebel scum...naturally but the only shaper I have encountered has implanted me with a thing that can kill me if I disobey him. It doesn't engender love and respect by any stretch. What is a poor amnesiac ex-shaper to do?

EDIT: As an update, this will go a few days until the next upload. The Prime Minister is coming to town tomorrow and I have to work the event. Will be resuming recording on the weekend. Please be patient if you are that one viewer out there who has watched every episode so far. :)

is up now. I take some time to wrap up the final quests in the first region and pit myself against the nefarious challenges in the Shaper testing hall.

And the

has gone live.

Minor sound issue in this one. I muted the mic towards the second half so my charming (or not) Australian accent will be absent for the second half while game sounds remain.

You may or may not view this as an improvement. :)

Fixed for next episode.

Ehmmm... it's easier to follow the episode if there is commentary from you. Accent or not.

Indeed. Was meant to be a temporary mute to slurp some hot tea. Didn't work as well as I had hoped. But the sound is fixed for the next part.

Accent or not.

I think this is positive? :)

It is a little hard to hide the accent. Worse considering I am from a country town and we all speak much thicker out here.

On a related note, the

has gone live. I've currently got an Anno 2205 LP that has just started so releases will compete for a little while but I should have enough of a backlog to keep up the current standard release every 2 days for Geneforge.

Don't forget to like and subscribe. :)

And I am proud to release

.

We begin to explore the Township of Mera in the Mera-Tev swamps. Swamps are probably my favourite biome in every geneforge game. I like the openness despite the water 'walls' in each map.

Channel Update

Had a considerable recording hurdle. Somehow an entire batch of videos record well for the first 2 minutes only to have the onscreen image freeze for the remainder while my voice goes on merrily for the rest of the video. This is 2 weeks worth of upcoming footage that needs to be redone. Since I am not releasing audio books of Jeff's work the screenwork is pretty important for what happens.

My question to anyone who watches these videos is: Would you like me to continue on from where I left off and just explain what occurred in the gap? We are still in the mera-tev swamp and I've only cleared out a few regions and done a few rather uninteresting quests. Or would you prefer that I re-record the entire thing from an earlier save?

Regardless, whatever you choose will have to wait a week. I am going over to Japan on my honeymoon tomorrow for 2 weeks and have no time to re-record hours of content and upload it before I leave. My apologies to those who were watching. Will be back after the 26th to continue.

Is this about past videos or videos we haven't watched?

What exactly you did in the swamp as definitions of "uninteresting" vary.

If you tried to take on an Unbound, I would like to watch it for example. And I would like to see your reaction with Denna's quest ending.

If you haven't finished the quest, don't look in the internet for answers. It would be spoily.

CONGRATULATIONS on your marriage!

This was about videos that you haven't watched. I had a full release schedule planned so that no one would ever know that I was out of the country. Somehow it didn't work out as planned and I was a little burnt out from the mega recording session that it took to make those the day before I left overseas.

Having had a chance to unwind a bit over here I think I will go back and re-record them for the viewers.

Oh, the unbound. That thing gave me chills in a way that I can't describe. It has been more than a decade since gaming has made me feel like that.

I know... my sister was laughing when she heard me yelping in fear, checked on me and saw panicky clicking the mouse as I was running away from an Unbound.

I would say record the important parts since you've played the part. No need to spend 3 hours re-playing encounters. Meetings are kinda more important since we see your choices.

That first Unbound appearance can be scary. Then there is the adrenaline rush sneaking through a ruin filled with them. One wrong click ...

" Is there ever a point at which I can handle them? They seem an impossible distance in front of me power-wise."

Yes. Once you get powerful creations and after getting a lot of failures you learn to gauge the distance juuuuuust so, that your creations ranged attack hit them while their nasty area attack doesn't reach the creations.

Ok, I am back from overseas and had my first recording session which failed on the first vid again. I can't reproduce the freeze eroor while testing but it pops up every time during an actual session within 30 secs. no idea what causes it yet. Thanks for the patience.

EDIT: Got it mostly sorted. Episodes uploading now. Will post the link when the first one is ready. Alternatively, subscribe to my channel and youtube will notify you when they become active.

Good one. By the time I found Dhana, I have half-forgiven her. I got ANOTHER quest from her, that I never managed to finish.

Forgiveness is not one of my strong points. She needs to hope that I forget. On the plus side, I did get a decent chunk of exp from her which is always acceptable.

Also,

is now out in the wild, free from it's scheduled listing shackles. It was also the most disturbing encounter. I'd encountered *spoiler* in other map tiles so was a little over confident this time thinking I was safe but evil death and destruction surprised me when I didn't expect it. I was about as mature as can be expected.

You won't forget, cause the narrative will remind you the moment you see her.

Also, aren't you glad that the Unbound have atrocious senses? :p

I saw alhoon barely made it...

ALSO: How you saw the hp of that plated artilla, mid-video? That showed the green text and all?

Ah, you've noticed my magical power have you? Very useful to find people who have names and are worthy to talk to as well as quickly checking the hp of enemy combatants. If you comment on my video I might tell you. :) The power of bribes.

Or I could just tell you now. Right-click on the enemy and it causes their information to pop up. I've been doing it since the first video.

Also, aren't you glad that the Unbound have atrocious senses? :p

You have no idea. Just finished a recording session now and am ever so thankful for that. Was a very near thing. Also in a totally related line of thought......I hope you haven't become too attached to this current alhoon creation. It 'may' find itself getting remade a few times in coming videos. Apparently unbound are very strong.

is loose in the wild. Enjoy the swift purging of dirty dirty bandits.

Also, if anyone is keen for a creation to be named after them feel free to drop a suggestion. I think I am up to about my 10th iteration of alhoon, chessrook, bormac and sajuuk.

You should concentrate to getting something stronger than Cryoras now. Ignore roamers and go for Vlish. Clawbugs are also very good.

Vlish are too expensive. I won't buy from an exorbitant vendor. Hoping that someone cheaper comes up in the near future. Are you aware of any other vendors nearby that I might have missed?

Nope and you should get used to buying from exorbitant vendors... :p

IIRC, Quothe drops his prices after you do a quest for him in the Unbound chain. Not 100% sure.

There's also a canister of create Vlish in a servile town.

I also suggest next time a Cryora dies, change her with a clawbug. IMO at this time you should have one toughy to soak up melee attacks while the Cryoras are away.

DO NOT use the melee creation against Unbound. It's better to attack ranged only from a distance juuuust outside the burst. A melee creation would get the burst, get the attacks AND cause the unbound to move ~> you have to reposition your guys.

Watching Episode 19: You shouldn't have raised mechanics. You have more than you'll need. Right now, you have enough mechanics to finish the game. You're actually 2 over what I would consider ideal for a 35 lvl char. You're also lacking in leadership in my opinion. Even in the final battle, leadership will be of more use to you than mechanics, and you already have enough mechanics. :)

History: This was the second of my big surprises: A shaper shaping himself to death to make a suicide.

I liked this episode, but since I have no youtube account... I can't vote it. :(

I have a love/hate relationship with leadership. I hate missing out on thing but I find it such a point dump. And if I have, for example, 11 points when I need 12 I get nothing. Such a hit and miss type of thing. I was considering doing a low leadership game but if you say it is that important I might consider dumping a few more levels in. What would you suggest is a useful target?

As for clawbugs, I really don't like battle creations and haven't put many points into it. I might consider a vlish or two but I am far and away no where near beating an Unbound so exorbitant prices it is for the near future I guess. I'm only up to episode 22 I think so 23 onwards will incorporate your suggestions.

Finally, if I may ask, what was it about episode 19 that you liked so much? Did I do something different/better or was it just the content that was covered in the game? Suggestions to improve would be welcomed as I've only ever been a consumer of content, never a creator until recently.

EDIT: Also,

has gone live.

Well... can't tell. Perhaps it was that I was in a good mood when watching it. Perhaps it was that it covered an area that I barely remember, having played it half-asleep or something. Perhaps it was that you took a very different path than I did (I had high leadership, so things were different for me). Perhaps all the above.

has been published. I finally start getting back on to the main quest line. Still wavering about going shaper or rebel. My current philosophy pretty much revolves around "don't be an arse" to the people I meet at the moment. Final path decisions to be made at a later date.

Haven't watched the latest 3 episodes but heed my words of wisdom: Make a save when you're nearly done with the game WITHOUT commiting to any leader. Then do the endings.

IMO, ALL the endings require you to be an arse to people that don't deserve it.

I don't have a problem being horrible to people once I get that "us vs them" mentality going. But for the time being I haven't really found a team I want to join just yet. Rawal is horrible (and I have a feeling he isn't a joinable faction), Astoria seems a little non-committal, I want to end this war one way of another.

I assume there will be a Drakon and a shaper faction somewhere in the wilds that are more committed to an absolute cause. I'll be joining one of those depending on how convincing Jeff's writing was when he made each faction.

There is a total of 6 factions, but I won't spoil it for you. It's a very nice journey.

Figured 2 more names after watching most of ep 20 (which had stuff I've forgotten about). A duo of Cryoras. "Cannon" and "Fodder".

You have the essence and you certainly need a bit more back-up now.

Also, If I may suggest for the future, try to keep the vlish you'll certainly make soon around for a time to level them up. It really counts.

As a note, I kept Captain's Shiv till the very end. In your case though, not sure if it's better since you seem a bit more conservative with blessing magic (I was spamming it. Red in the horizon = bless and shield for me).

Great names. I love that idea. :)

Also, I have yet to record past episode 22. Christmas parties have destroyed my normal recording time of friday/saturday night while the wife is at work. I've been drinking and being merry instead of killing dirty rebel scum. I will be back to it soon. I'm so keen to keep playing and exploring!

In the meantime I've been scheduling my other LP to release instead. Space program manager. Was hoping to save that one until the new year but I don't want to have a week or 2 with no content released. May or may not be something you are interested in.

Will update the thread when I get the next Geneforge 5 episode released. Won't be long, probably this weekend since Friday night will be quiet.

I've taken on some of your advice in

. Vlish might be a valuable addition, if only for the fact that they have a different damage attack type. No comment on whether 'Cannon' or 'Fodder' will see the light of day. Will have to see whether I take any more casualties in the near future.
