Well... As I said, it is a little odd but...
Is it possible to mod the game to increase the max gold cap? Because Avernum 1 the gold cap is 9k, which is a bit low for me.

I think the gold cap is hardcoded into the game.  Part of the problem is the number of bytes assigned to the gold integer variable.  In some cases if you exceed the cap by too much the variable goes to a negative value.

Since in the Avernum games you can leave items anywhere in a town or dungeon and collect them later, most players just store items near a shop to sell later.

The cap is 30,000 last time I checked with the character editor

The gold cap was increased from Avernum 1 through 3 to the current 30,000.
