Over the last 6 or so months, I've managed to wreck three computers one way or another. After my last computer went, I realised I was pretty much sick of them, mostly because for me they manage to use up a lot of time and I achieve nothing. That and, there's only one reason I need to have access one, but that takes one 15-20 session once every 2 weeks. So I'm thinking of not getting another one.

Now that I have nothing to occupy my free time, I'm struggling to think of things to occupy it. So I was curious to know, what do people do around here to enjoy their free time that doesn't involve a computer or TV (yesterday was my first time in over 12 months where I actually watched tv).

Out of curiosity, how have you managed to "wreck" three computers in six months?

Anyway, I read. Whilst everything I've read lately has been for my studies, before I started university I used to consume a novel every week or so. I don't watch television either, but I do own one for watching movies or playing computer games (I use my computer as a gaming machine rather than dusting off my games consoles, though). I write. I build models out of Lego. I walk - living in a rural area helps, because after fifteen or so minutes out of my house I hit wide open countryside. Mostly though, I try to socialise; between having a full-time job and being a full-time student, my free time is limited, so I try to see (or at least speak to) other people as much as I can in order to keep hold of some remnant of my sanity.

I collect rocks. I judge their comparative worth by beating them against each other until one of them breaks. The rocks that survive go on to another round and so forth until only one remains. The champions are then pooled until I have enough to pit against each other in a gladiatorial style arena. The sole victor is rewarded a spot in the breeding pits.

Throw rocks. - Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Robert A. Heinlein.

At least that's what my neighbors' kids do when they are bored. Too bad it's my house that they use as a target and I can't prove it since I don't have photos. I should release the Kraken.

This sounds oddly inappropriate.

I recommend installing a webcam, and letting the hits roll in.

Is the webcam for watching the gladiatorial combat or the breeding pits? Either way, I've got that mixture of horror and fascination that makes for great ratings.

—Alorael, who really recommends reading another book. And boardgames, if you have any fellow (potential) boardgamers around. And enjoying sports and/or the great outdoors, depending on athleticism and taste. Taking a walk is nice if you live somewhere nice enough to walk around.

... Well, Diki pretty much beat me to everything. Except that I don't pay more attention to birds than other flora and fauna (although I get pretty excited about trees), and I'm not much of a fisherman. Oh, and I go to a lot of movies at the local theatre, where I also occasional run the projector.

Bicycle riding is fun, especially if you live in a area with a lot of trails (someone stole my seat today, though?). My campus has an enormous library of which I make extensive use. Because my studies have corrupted me, I also enjoy solving problems from my engineering textbooks.

Also, Settlers of Catan and beer.

Sports (either competitive or social or both), cooking, drinking, board games (Dominion is a favorite), reading, cultural experiences like museums, concerts, galleries, etc. And while it does involve a computer (or smartphone), meetup.com in populous areas is pretty good for meeting likeminded people or getting into new hobbies. DC also has things like Knowledge Commons DC, and your area might have something similar.

I should probably get back into fishing again. And probably get back into cooking properly rather than being lazy with it.

Try a traditional martial art, such as karate or kung fu (if you're a beginner, i'd avoid muay thai & MMA) it get you in shape, builds self confidence, you learn how to defend yourself, and it can be quite fun.

I did Taekwon Do for about 3 or 4 years. I have thought about doing something else, but a few of the places I was looking at were quite expensive.

Congrats on 1,234 posts. (von, two, three, four, ahahahaha!)

Why thank you, I never notice. (Een, twee, drei, vier? :p)

  • 1 month later...

Dr. Motrax (yay!) indulges in musical pursuits, wants to be but is not currently active in martial arts (it IS expensive! But if you find a good school, it's well worth it!), is devoting time to reading books (both technical and otherwise), going on long walks, and posting on this forum once every other year or so. ;)

If you've got nothing to do, you may also want to become an expert cook (which I am not). This is a skill that can be useful in many an unexpected situation.

Soccer, hockey, running, dancing, socializing, and girls

Probably I should focus on my masters degree, and do some actual work, but I didn't come back for it, I came back to do the things I missed out on in undergrad cuze I was too busy studying. And now, well, I'm just barely passing classes and don't really care about school at all. It's a big a change to go from an A+ student to this. Haha. But fear not, I finished my masters research (data collection) the year before I started the programme, so I just have to write the thing.
