Spiderchess Tournament

Okay, so as elaborated in the earlier thread, I'm organizing a chess tournament. If you're interested, say so below. I'm going to limit this to ten persons, or whoever signs up in the next couple days.

We'll be doing all the matches at chess.calref.net. If you don't have an account you'll need to make one (It's pretty straightforward and doesn't require clicking links in email or any of that crap). In addition, it's handy to have a real-time aspect as well, so entrants are encouraged to hang out in the calref chat while playing (registration not required there, but recommended).

Note: Upon registering, the webchess will ask for your first and last name, and won't let you leave it blank. If you are uncomfortable doing this, just put your username twice or something. It's not really needed and is a chess etiquette thing, I guess.

Anywho, the tournament is going to be a double round-robin. Each player will play every other player twice, once as white and once as black. We'll shoot for getting two rounds a week done, but this can go slower or faster as time allows.

The grand prize is, uh, being the best or something. Also I'll draw you a pony or something (this isn't really a prize, i have no artistic skills).

So yeah and stuff.

As I said in the other thread, I'd love to participate but am working for the rest of the month. Have to hand in my bachelor thesis soon. (In fact, I'm about to go offline entirely).

I don't know the time schedule of this tournament, but if it goes on for a while, then it might be possible to match up some late entrants and have them make up the pace with more frequent games later.

Okie-day. I currently have the following people signed up:

- Sylae

- Tyra

- BMA

- Goldenking

- Aeschere

- Aran

- Mosquito

I also noted that Nalyd, Trenton, and The Reverend expressed interest in the other thread. If they want in for sure they should say so here, otherwise those slots are free for the taking.

With regards to the busyfolk (Currently Aran and Mosquito), I'll just list them in the rounds as normal, but if all the other games in a round are done we'll just move on, and they can make those games up once their schedule is freeer (freer? free-er? more free?).

Round one:

Nalyd - Excalibur

Nioca - Lenar

Mosquito* - Aeschere

Aran* - Tyra

GoldKing - BMA

Trenton - Sylae

First player is white, second is black. Once you've played, post who won and the webchess gameID (so I can extract PGNs for the listener's convenience). Best of luck!

(trenton, I'm down to play whenever you have time, I'll be in calref or mtbrony)

I tried registering at Cal Ref and it says my account hasn't been activated, how much time does that take?, It's been about 18 hours or so since I tried.

It now is. Thanks for saying something, I was literally about to purge the registrations of the eight billion spambot accounts that are getting through.

You have a typo in your post.

I'm not sure exactly how results should be posted so I'll just follow Trenton's example.

I'd like to point out a possible bug in the web-chess client:

1. d4 Nf6 2. e3 d5 3. c3 e6 4. Na3 c5 5. dxc5 Bxc5 6. Be2 O-O 7. Kf1 Nc6 8. Nb5

e5 9. Nd6 Qxd6 10. h4 a5 11. f3 d4 12. f4 Ne4 13. Nf3 Ng3+ 14. Kf2 Nxh1+ 15. Kf1

Ng3+ 16. Ke1 Nxe2 17. Kxe2 e4 18. Kd2 exf3 19. exd4 fxg2 20. Kc2 Bf5+ 21. Kb3

Qd5+ 22. c4 a4+ 23. Kc3 Bb4# 1-0

1. h4 e5 2. d3 Nc6 3. Rh3 a5 4. c4 Bb4+ 5. Bd2 Nf6 6. a3 Bc5 7. b4 Bd4 8. Bc3

Ng4 9. f4 Bf2+ 10. Kd2 exf4 11. Bxg7 Nd4 12. Ra2 f3 13. exf3 Ne3 14. Qc1 Nb3+

15. Ke2 Nxc1+ 16. Kxf2 Nd1+ 17. Ke1 Ne3 18. Ne2 Nxa2 19. Kd2 Nxf1+ 20. Kc2 Qe7

21. Rh1 Qxe2+ 22. Kb3 a4# 1-0

When Black wins, as in both these cases, the game closes with 0-1.

The notation was correct when Sylae posted her game against Mosquito Slayer, so it might not happen consistently. But it's more likely that she just put that in manually instead of pasting the PGN output.

(Speaking of bugs, the PGN export URLs still show only empty games, as far as I can tell.)

The term "guy" is often used to refer to a person, or in the plural to a group, regardless of sex or gender.

This. Sure it's important to get pronouns right, but I don't think we need to be over-sensitive about it, and some people might not have read the thread mentioned. Anyway. Woo, chess!

Okay, um. Let's just not have this thread turn into a thread about a particular member's gender (or anybody's gender, for that matter, since it's really not important or relevant to the topic at hand)? I really don't think we need to carry on discussing this.

(And, I'd like to note that I'm not speaking as a moderator here, but as a regular member.)
