Most likely it is a system specific issue. (Video card, interaction with other programs, etc). In general, these games do work (e.g. my own PC is also running Windows 7 64 bit with latest nvidia graphics driver, and these games run fine for me).

The general advice given in the tech support header still applies. Some people have seen improvement by changing the 3D settings in the graphics driver.

Some people have also reported issues specific to the Steam version. Try getting the non-Steam demo from the spiderweb website. If that runs ok, it might be worth contact spiderweb to see if you get a registration key.

In the meantime if you drop Spiderwewb an email explaining what's happened, and some sort of proof that you did indeed buy the game from Steam, there's every chance you'll get the unlock code for the demo. That way the wait for Steam to do something useful won't be as painful.

Well, the other person reports that the demo version from Spiderweb's site works; that was really what I was responding to. Still, if you haven't already, try that; it seems from this theead that Steam hasn't updated something, or have broken something. smirk

It almost looks like files are missing, all that is in folder is, data folder, Avernum application and a Steam file. Already submitted a ticket with Steam and sent a Email to Spiderweb. I have all the Spiderweb games that Steam has and all work but Avernum 4 & 5.

Thanks. smile

Also, 6 and Escape from the pit come up with a configuration program, 4 & 5 do not.

I note you are using Windows 7 64 bit. There have been a lot of weird problems on this platform, and they have almost always been solved by installing (or reinstalling) the newest versions of your video card drivers. For 64 bit operating systems, this is very important. Did you do this?

Hello, Steam user here.

A couple minutes ago steam asked me to restart the client because of a new update they are putting out. I did so. And now Avernum 4 will no longer start or play. I verified the cache and it found 27 files needed to be redownloaded, but this didn't fix the problem. I seem to have the same crash error as everyone else.

Faulting application avernum 4.exe, version 0.0.0.0, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x00000000.

I'm running Windows XP and the demo version of Avernum 4 I also have installed runs just fine. I copied the demo EXE over and it does run. Both on its own and through steam. However the demo EXE does not count as registered.

I'm going to be really dissapointed if my saves don't work. This is already the third time I've played through the starting content.

Your saved games should be fine, and shouldn't be overwritten (you could go ahead and make a back-up just to be sure, though).

Spiderweb is aware of this problem, and I guess they're working with Steam to figure this out, so hopefully things'll be fixed pretty quickly for you. If you really want to, you could email Spiderweb directly at support(at)spiderwebsoftware.com and make them aware of your problem.

I'm not overly concerned. In terms of issues this is smalltime compared to some other games I could mention that I bought day 1 on Steam. Magicka anyone?

Given that a simple EXE switch doesn't provoke an error, and the difference between the demo and Steam exe is .01mb of data. This probably just a slight bug in the coding that points in the wrong direction.

Played it two times for about 45 minutes total seems like an amazing game. Now every time on my steam version it crashes at launch, even after uninstall and reinstall. Avernum4.exe has stopped working. Bad way to start a series. Also the reinstall is weird it says game size is 302 mb but the thing downloads in about 30 seconds on my PC. I have fast internet, but not that fast. I did what I know to do to delete it completely from steamapps, but no joy.

I'm having the same problem running Geneforge 3 through Steam.

I've happily been playing the game for the last couple of days, and never had problems with Geneforges 1 and 2 before it, and since the last client update I get this same 'BEX' error.

I'm on Win7 32-bit.

Just thought I'd add that I am having the same problems with the steam version of Avernum 4 (win7,64-bit)

I've downloaded the demo and that seems to work fine.

I know that (or at least assume that) Spiderweb and Valve are working on a fix but could someone confirm that the save games from the demo will work on the full version.

The demo of Avernum 4 puts them in a folder called "Avernum 4" in your documents folder.

Avadon, Avernum 5-6 and the Steam release of Avernum 4 put their savegames in the /Spiderweb Software/Avadon etc folder, also in your documents.

Just transfer it over manually.

I posted a comment on another thread in this forum, before seeing this one, I'm having the same issue with the steam versions of geneforge 1 -4. While I assume its the case, could someone confirm if the Geneforge saves are as easily portable between the demo and the full games as the Avernum saves seem to be?

I also purchased the Avernum: The Great Trials Trilogy bundle on Steam. I am posting the error message that I receive after updating my Steam client and trying to run Avernum 4 and 5.

I notice that the error message I receive is nearly identical from the OP. I hope that someone from Spiderweb Software reads this and are able to help in this matter.

Should I contact support or should I just wait for a fix?

*UPDATE* I forgot to mention I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit w/SP1, with all of the current hotfixes applied.

Thank you!

Hardly the start of a series...O_o..:)

Well, I sent an email to Spiderweb Software a few hours ago that basically contained what I posted here. I am awaiting a response from them now. Hopefully, they are aware of the problem and will provide a fix soon.

The only other option, I can see is to try to create a DEP exception for the application. I will try that now and update when I have a result.

*UPDATE* Windows 7 will not allow me to add the application to the DEP exception list.

Quote:
This program must run with data execution protection (DEP) enabled.

You cannot turn off DEP for this program.

Oh well, it was worth a shot. The only thing to do now is to wait for a fix. This sucks because I really want to play these games in order!

Hello, author here.

I am not able to reproduce this crash on my 64 bit Windows 7 machine, so it is not a universal problem. It is something that needs to be fixed, of course, but it's not a simple thing to troubleshoot.

One thing I want to know is if people have downloaded and installed (or reinstalled) the newest versions of their video card drivers. This is frequently necessary to fix weird problems with games in the 64 bit versions of the OS.

In the meantime, please contact us at support@spiderwebsoftware.com and we can get you up and running.

EDIT: I note that some people have updated their drivers and it doesn't fix anything. I'll ask Steam about this. You can still contact us at the address above for help.

I wonder what can be the cause. I'm 100% sure its' a steam client related because I was playing Geneforge with steam in offline mode. I went online and was prompted with a steam client update... voila the earlier games no longer worked.

.Net was updated recently could it be something to do with that?

Or could it be related to the install location for steam? I have mine installed in the default programfilesx86.

I'm very sure it's a Steam problem, at least for Geneforge, and I'd be floored if it wasn't the same problem across the board for all the titles that stoped working. I had updated my 3d drivers (There was a catalyst update same day as the steam client update) ~ 5 hours before Geneforge stoped working, it worked just fine following that, on both the front and back side of a restart. I played for a while, and got up from the machine to talk with my girlfriend for a bit, steam prompted me for the restart to install the steam update, which I did, I came back, and *poof* my game no longer worked. The fact that Steam support is trying to pawn off the blame.... =(

I am on Windows Vista 32bit, and I also had Avernum 4 stop working after the latest steam client update.

It seems strange that this crash is associated with a steam client update. Swapping "Avernum 4.exe" to the demo version doesn't help steam start the game but allows it to be launched manually (from C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\avernum 4\). Trying to launch the steam version of the exe manually results in the "(SteamAPI_Init() failed)" error.

Key points:

* Steam cannot successfully launch either exe.

* 32 bit system - so this is not a Win7/64bit thing.

* I can run the demo, so it's not a driver issue. No drivers have changed since it used to work and no driver needs to be changed to make the demo work.

* Definitely related to the most recent steam client update. Devs: Find out what *exactly* changed in that update and look there.

* Based on file modified times, I don't think *anything* in the C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\avernum 4\ directory changed as part of the steam client update. Perhaps something should have changed that didn't?

That's all I've got. Good luck devs! I hope you can sort us all out soon.

Edit: One more thing: The last dev post confirmed "not reproducible on Win7/64bit", but that may mean his version doesn't show an error on that system. We've confirmed it's not a problem with a specific OS/platform. What hasn't been established is whether it's universal/reproducible for people using the latest steam client. Any confirmation of many more instances of the crash or of *any* instances where the steam client updated but the problem did *not* occur will be helpful. Little chance of someone whose game is working coming into this thread though, so maybe ask any friends who also have the game on steam?

The important thing is whether the devs (or just Jeff?) can reproduce the issue in order to get to the bottom of it.

Jeff, thanks so much for responding to this thread a few times already. If you have a good repro let us know and we'll just chill and let you figure it out. smile

It's definitely related to the steam update. I have two machines with steam, I ran the update on my primary (Win7/64-bit) machine and Avernum 4 stopped working.

I then copied the steam install from my secondary machine (everything except the steamapps folder which contains the games themselves) and Avernum 4 works again.

Avernum 4 works with steam client:

Built: April 18 2012, at 10:17:32

Steam API: v012

Steam package versions: 1868 / 1868

Avernum 4 does not work with steam client:

Built: May 15 2012, at 10:21:05

Steam API: v012

Steam package versions: 1869 / 1869

There were no changes at all made to the Avernum 4 install during this test, so that presumably rules out an issue due to a change on Spiderweb's side (though they may still be stuck holding the bag to work around the crash).

Nice!

Is there any way for normal people to revert to an earlier steam client without having a 2nd machine though?

Built: April 18 2012, at 10:17:32
Steam API: v012
Steam package versions: 1868 / 1868

Avernum 4 does not work with steam client:
Built: May 15 2012, at 10:21:05
Steam API: v012
Steam package versions: 1869 / 1869

There were no changes at all made to the Avernum 4 install during this test, so that presumably rules out an issue due to a change on Spiderweb's side (though they may still be stuck holding the bag to work around the crash).

Nice work.
Backing up my steam on my lappy so if it gets updated I can still
play

Is there any way for normal people to revert to an earlier steam client without having a 2nd machine though?

If we are lucky, the steam client version that is on
http://store.steampowered.com/about/
maybe is still the old one.

BAckup your steam folder or just move steamapps , uninstall steam and install from the link

might worth a try, I cannot test right now bc im at the office

In case this needs any further confirmation.

I played through Geneforge 1 (steam version) a few days ago, and was a couple of hours into Geneforge 2 (steam version) when the steam update hit.

Now I get crashes on startup of Geneforge 1-4 and Avernum 4 & 5. Geneforge 5 and Avernum 6 start fine however.

I'm on windows 7, 64 bit. Naturally tried all the obvious things (verifying cache, reinstalling, 3 different graphics driver versions). Nothing happened between the game working and not working other than the steam update, and installing Diablo 3.

My steam version says it was built at the same time as ibitato above, but apparently it's version 1889 / 1889 (rather than his, which says 1869).

The Geneforge 2 demo works on my machine, and if I replace the exe in steamapps with the demo exe, I am able to start it from within steam (Kestral said he couldn't do the same with Avernum 4).

Perhaps it's something to do with the resolution switching that has been added? I noticed that the demo won't let me start unless I allow it to resize the screen etc. Whereas the steam version I have been playing without resizing. Deleting my preferences file and attempting to start the steam version with resizing does not help however.

Hope that helps.

I have heard back from Steam. Nobody will be surprised to hear that this IS a problem related to the newest Steam update. They are working on fixing it.

If they can't fix it soon, I have come up with versions of Avernum 4 and 5 and Geneforge 1-4 that work around the problem, and I will submit the patches on Monday if the issue isn't resolved by them.

I may be able to come up with a workaround sooner, but I need to check in with Steam to see if it's workable for general users.

We apologize sincerely for this problem. It WILL be fixed in the next few days.

In the meantime, Geneforge 5 and Avernum 6 do work. Playing them instead of the game you want to play is a lousy solution, but at least it's something to do until them.
