I wish it was compatible with my windows 8 OS. Is anyone else having problems running any Geneforge versions on Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. No matter what I do, it doesn't play

Hi, a while back I purchased a Geneforge 3 Game on CD and I am trying to install it on my newer computer because I want to play it again. I adjusted the settings to run in compatible mode yet it keeps giving me a pop up box Geneforge 3 Error "DirectInput Error & Failed to set up mouse. Restart computer and try again." Can you help with the issue? Thanks!!
